The first trailer for director Craig Zisk’s comedy The English Teacher has been released online.  The film stars Julianne Moore as a high school English teacher whose life takes a turn when one of her favorite students (Michael Angarano) returns to his hometown as a failed playwright.  The teacher convinces her former pupil to stage the unproduced play at her school, but all does not go according to plan.  The comedy appears to be of the screwball variety, with plenty of pratfalls and physical comedy on full display in this here trailer (plus a solid David Mamet joke thrown in for good measure).  There does seem to be a strong emphasis on character, though, and it should be interesting to see how the numerous relationships teased in this clip play out in the full film.

MIRROR MIRROR Blu-ray Review

With 2012’s Battle of Snow White more or less over, the time has come to argue about who won (he says without a trace of irony). Opinions vary – and no one over at the Walt Disney Company has lost any sleep – but I’m backing the one that didn’t have Kristen Stewart mumbling her way through a half-assed version of the Crispian’s Day Speech. Mirror, Mirror benefits from a riotous sense of fun – something Snow White and the Huntsman utterly disregarded – and from playing with our expectations instead of simply ignoring them. 4 New Clips and 8 Minutes of Behind-the-Scenes Footage from MIRROR MIRROR

We’ve been provided with four clips and some behind-the-scenes footage from Tarsem Singh’s Snow White film Mirror Mirror. The tone is still incredibly light, but it’s a bit less “farce” than what we saw in the trailers.  The best way I can describe Mirror Mirror (based on these clips) is that it’s like a classic Disney animated film has been magically transformed into live-action; the actors and environments are real, but it retains all the dialogue, costumes, and action/movements from its previously animated iteration.  I would imagine the film wouldn’t appear near as ridiculous if everything was animated, but when you have actors wearing goofy hats and spouting corny line after corny line, it all seems bizarre.  That said, I do think Mirror Mirror comes off quite a bit better in these clips than it did in that atrocious first trailer.

New Images from Tarsem Singh’s Snow White Movie MIRROR MIRROR

A few new images from director Tarsem Singh’s take on Snow White Mirror Mirror, have gone online. The film still looks really, really bad and unendingly silly, as we see Nathan Lane wearing some sort of antennae hat in this batch of photos. I’m not exactly sure what Singh was going for, but the movie just looks beyond ridiculous. Those worried about the fact that we have two Snow White movies coming out this year can rest easy; Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman couldn’t be more different.

MIRROR MIRROR International Trailer

After we reported that Relativity Media was pushing its Snow White project Mirror Mirror back until March 30th, the studio decided to release a new international trailer. While it’s still nowhere near as mature or action-filled as the Universal counterpart Snow White and the Huntsman starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth, it’s heads above the horrendous first trailer. This is more along the lines of what I was expecting from director Tarsem Singh as I can at least pick up on his presence here.

Mirror Mirror stars Lily Collins, Armie Hammer, Nathan Lane and Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen. Hit the jump to check out the new trailer.

New Set Images from Tarsem Singh’s Snow White Film MIRROR MIRROR

by     Posted: January 12th, 2012 at 2:43 pm

It’s officially 2012, which means we’re that much closer to the first of two Snow White films set for release this year. First out of the gate will be director Tarsem Singh’s Mirror Mirror (followed by Snow White and the Huntsman this summer).  A gallery of new official set photos from the film has been released, giving us a look into Singh’s artistic process of bringing Snow White to life. The trailer for Mirror Mirror (described as a “comedic adventure) wasn’t exactly promising, but the visuals on display in these photos are pretty stunning. Disney regular Alan Menken (Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast) is working on the score for the film, so it’s safe to say that we’re in for a pretty fluffy version of the Snow White fairy tale.

First Trailer for Tarsem Singh’s MIRROR MIRROR Starring Julia Roberts

by     Posted: November 15th, 2011 at 3:35 pm

Fresh off the first trailer for the battle-heavy Snow White and the Huntsman, Relativity has released the first look at their take on Snow White, Mirror Mirror. Directed by Tarsem Singh, the fantasy film is described as a “comedic adventure”and centers on Snow White (Lily Collins) setting out to reclaim her birthright from the Evil Queen (Julia Roberts). Mirror Mirror couldn’t be more different from Huntsman. It’s light, fluffy, and goofy. It’s also pretty close to terrible. The film almost comes off as a farce, it’s just so incredibly goofy. It’s as if Adam Sandler‘s Happy Madison decided to make a Snow White movie. With Tarsem at the helm, we’re sure to be in for a visual treat, but I fear the tone may painfully overshadow the extravagant visuals.

THE LION KING Blu-ray Review

by     Posted: October 24th, 2011 at 3:00 pm

Though there’s no touching the early wave of classic Disney animated features, when the studio reinvented its animation department in the late 1980’s they had a run of successful and impactful films that deserve to be shelved near those great works. 1994’s The Lion King is the best of that run (which arguably goes from 1989’s The Little Mermaid through to 1999’s Tarzan) and a film that captures much of the same terrain of those classics, but reimagines those stories in a way that feels fresh. It’s a crowning achievement, and the Diamond Edition Blu-ray presents the film in a pristine transfer. Our review of The Lion King on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Per the report, Lane is in talks to take on the role of a drama teacher who Moore turns to for help in crafting a stronger play. Production on The English Teacher will begin next month in New York. Another day, another casting story related to a Snow White movie.  Yesterday, we reported that Sam Claflin would play the prince in Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman.  Today, Relativity Media has announced that Nathan Lane and Robert Emms (War Horse) have joined Tarsem Singh’s currently untitled Snow White feature (the title used to be The Brothers Grimm: Snow White).  Singh’s version is billed as a “spirited adventure comedy” that features the evil queen (Julia Roberts) and exiled princess Snow White (Lily Collins) vying for control of their kingdom.  Somewhere in that power struggle is the evil queen trying to destroy Snow White’s beauty in order to be the fairest of them all.  Armie Hammer will play a prince who comes to the kingdom in disguise in order to find a woman who will love him for his personality and not his title (Shot in the dark, but I think that woman is going to be Snow White.

Hit the jump for details on the roles Lane and Emms will be playing within the full press release.  Singh’s untitled Snow White film is due out June 29, 2012.

TV Casting Call: Nathan Lane Guest Starring on MODERN FAMILY and Timothy Olyphant Will Steal Clients on THE OFFICE

by     Posted: August 2nd, 2010 at 3:15 pm

Two spectacular guest star announcements for two of my favorite comedy series are coming your way. First up, EW reports the flamboyant (and I mean that in the best way possible) Tony award winning Nathan Lane (The Birdcage, The Producers) has signed on to guest star on ABC’s Modern Family. Lane will guest star in one of the earlier episodes in the second season as Cam’s (Eric Stonestreet) flamboyant (see, I told you) friend Pepper. I’m willing to bet that his partner Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) isn’t going to be too keen on Pepper.

And for fans of The Office, after an impressive turn on FX’s Justified, the underrated Timothy Olyphant will venture into comedy at NBC for at least two episodes during Steve Carell’s final season.  More after the jump:
