Now available on VOD and playing in select theaters is director Jake Paltrow’s Young Ones.  The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where water has become scarce and the only hope for a family becomes an irrigation pipeline that can revitalize their land.  This conflict sets off a battle between the family’s patriarch Ernest Holm (Michael Shannon) and a young man (Nicholas Hoult) looking to romance Ernest’s daughter Mary (Elle Fanning).  The film also stars Kodi Smit McPhee as Shanon’s son.  For more on the film, watch the trailer.

Last week in New York City I landed a fantastic interview with Nicholas Hoult.  During our wide ranging conversation we talked about what the past few years have been like, the process of making Young Ones, working with Michael Shannon, what it was like making Mad Max: Fury Road with George Miller, working on Drake DoremusEquals with Kristen Stewart, Comic-Con, X-Men: Apocalypse, Autobahn, Kill Your Friends, if he still has to audition, what he collects, what he’d like to do in the future, and so much more.  If you’re a fan of this very talented actor, I promise you will dig this interview.

YOUNG ONES Review

young-ones-review

[This is a re-post of my review from the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.  Young Ones opens today in limited release.]

There are rare times when everything in a movie can work—its direction, performances, etc.—and yet the picture somehow comes up short. This is the problem with trying to judge movies piecemeal. For all of the different aspects that make up a picture, we have to evaluate it as a whole. Obviously, we can call attention to its outstanding aspects, but they have to lead, for better or worse, to some kind of impression. Jake Paltrow’s Young Ones is remarkable in how it does so much right, and yet it leaves the viewer completely cold. Its strengths are undeniable and its flaws are subtle, so subtle that they can be confusing as to how such a technically superb picture can be so ineffective.

UNDERDOGS Voice Cast Includes Ariana Grande, Nicholas Hoult, Matthew Morrison and More; Plus Two New Images

The idea of foosball players coming to life to help a kid save his village and the girl of his dreams sounds pretty silly, but it’s hard to turn down a movie with Ariana Grande, Nicholas Hoult, Matthew Morrison, Katie Holmes, John Leguizamo, Eugenio Derbez, Taran Killam, Bobby Moynihan and Chazz Palminteri attached to voice the characters.  Plus, the film did win the Grand Prize Award for a feature film at the New York International Children’s Film Festival, so perhaps I’m being too quick to judge.  (Although I do find Grande’s speaking voice quite grating.)

X-Men: Days of Future Past is now available on Blu-ray, and today we’re pleased to bring you an exclusive clip from the special features.  The clip points out fourteen years have passed between the original X-Men and the latest installment, and how that gulf has been bridged not only by the DOFP‘s plot, but by the actors in between.  In the clip, Hoult explains how walking through Cerebro alongside Hugh Jackman is his “childhood come to life”, and Jackman reminds us that the very first thing he ever shot for the X-Men franchise was a scene that took place inside Cerebro.

First EQUALS Image Reveals Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult in Drake Doremus’ Sci-Fi Romance

The first Equals image from director Drake Doremus’ (Like Crazy) upcoming sci-fi film has landed online.  The film stars Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult and takes place in a world without greed, poverty, violence, or emotion.  A new disease called Switched-On-Syndrome threatens to activate these dormant emotions, instilling love, depression, sensitivity, and fear into those affected, who are then swiftly sent away and never seen again.  Stewart and Hoult’s characters are caught in the middle of the dilemma, and as can be gleaned from this first image, the two strike up a forbidden relationship.  I’ve been incredibly curious about this film for some time now, and I was really impressed with Doremus’ Like Crazy follow-up Breathe In.  Moreover, I’m interested to see how Stewart adapts to Doremus’ heavily improvised style of directing.

Take a look at the first Equals image after the jump.  The film also stars Guy Pearce and Jacki Weaver and opens in theaters sometime next year.

YOUNG ONES Trailer Features Michael Shannon and Nicholas Hoult in a Fight for Water and Land

Screen Media Films has released the Young Ones trailer online.  The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where water has become scarce and the only hope for a family becomes an irrigation pipeline that can revitalize their land.  This conflict sets off a battle between the family’s patriarch Ernest Holm (Michael Shannon) and Flem Lever, a young man (Nicholas Hoult) looking to romance Ernest’s daughter Mary (Elle Fanning).  I caught Young Ones at Sundance, and it was one of the most frustrating movies I’ve seen in some time.  Taken at its individual elements—visuals, performances, structure—it’s incredible.  But these parts never built to an emotional impact for me, and it was a struggle to figure out why.  I hope other viewers have more of a connection with the picture.  At the very least, it’s a worthwhile curiosity.

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Trailer – Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron Bring the Madness, Plus a More Detailed Plot Synopsis and Character Description

mad-max-fury-road-trailer

Warner Bros. has released the first Mad Max: Fury Road trailer for director George Miller’s highly anticipated fourth installment in the Mad Max franchise.  The post-apocalyptic actioner sees Tom Hardy filling the role of Max, a man seeking peace following the loss of his wife and child, while Charlize Theron plays Furiosa, a woman who aims to survive by trekking across the desert back to her homeland.  You’ll have to watch this trailer a few times, not to glean any plot details but just to catch bits and pieces of the insanity on display.  It’s certainly in line with the madness of the previous films, though it remains to be seen whether or not Hardy can fill Mel Gibson’s spiked boots because he’s incapacitated for the most part of this first look.  Still, there’s lots to be excited for – car crashes, insane leather fetishes, slavers, open-desert high-speed chases, two-headed geckos, etc – especially after such a long delay.

New MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Images Reveal Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, and a Very White Nicholas Hoult

Earlier today, we got our first official look at director George Miller’s long-awaited follow-up Mad Max: Fury Road.  It was a tame EW cover featuring the film’s leads, Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, but now a batch of new images has surfaced, and they confirm that this movie is going to be absolutely nuts.  Nicholas Hoult is nearly unrecognizable as the bald and makeup-clad Nux, while the dystopian landscape is filled out with plenty of dangerous vehicles and sketchy characters.  Miller describes the film as one long chase sequence that starts as the movie begins and continues for 110 minutes, and based on these first-look images, the ride is going to be anything but dull.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Review

by     Posted 150 days ago

x-men-days-of-future-past-review

As I’ve re-watched all of the X-Men movies over the past week, it’s been a little difficult to nail down a common theme, especially since two of them are spin-offs.  Ignoring the Wolverine movies, the plots are similar: mutants-vs-humans mixed with mutants-vs-mutants with an emphasis on how to deal with persecution.  Xavier always wants peace, but from Magneto’s perspective, he’s tried assimilation (X-Men), annihilation (X2), mobilization (X-Men: The Last Stand), and retribution (X-Men: First Class).  But thus far we’ve only seen a nebulous notion of “Peace Is Good” from Professor X.  X-Men: Days of Future Past brings substance to Xavier’s beliefs and brings a new characteristic to the series: salvation.  Although this approach mostly removes the ensemble aspect I’ve enjoyed in these movies, the latest X-Men has the most admirable values thus far.  And while the action, pacing, and visuals aren’t quite as sharp as a couple of the other movies, director Bryan Singer has still managed to reclaim the series’ past, present, and future.

20th Century Fox has released twenty-three new images of X-Men: Days of Future Past character art.  The story finds Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) having his consciousness sent back to 1973 in order to help Professor X (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), and the rest of the X-Men: First Class crew stop the rise of the Sentinels, giant robots programmed to exterminate mutants.  This art use the same images as the ones from the Empire Magazine covers we saw a few months back.  The only thing that’s different is that the backgrounds are different and the Empire text is gone.  There were twenty-five posters for Empire; the missing two from this set: director Bryan Singer (no surprise) and Rogue (slight surprise), although it looks like she probably has a brief cameo in the finale cut.

Hit the jump to check out the character art.  The film also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Ian McKellan, Patrick StewartPeter Dinklage, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Omar Sy, and Halle Berry.  X-Men: Days of Future Past opens in 3D on May 23rd.
