When last we reported on director David Dobkins’ dramedy The Judge, it was to announce that Bill Dubuque had come on to do a rewrite and that Robert Downey Jr. was producing the picture as a starring vehicle. Now it looks as if Warner Bros. has extended an unofficial offer to Jack Nicholson to play Downey Jr.’s father in the film. Originally penned by Nick Schenk with an intermediate rewrite from David Seidler, The Judge centers on an attorney who returns home for his mother’s funeral only to discover that his estranged father, a judge who suffers from Alzheimer’s, is suspected of murder. Hit the jump for more, including how Nicholson’s fussy track record of selecting roles may impact The Judge.

Nick Schenk to Write ROBOCOP Remake; MORTAL KOMBAT Writer Oren Uziel Sells Action-Comedy

Director José Padilha said that when he signed on to remake RoboCop, he didn’t read any drafts left over from the Darren Aronofsky era because he “wanted to focus on my own thing and do my take.”  To create that vision, Padilha has turned to Gran Torino writer Nick SchenkHeat Vision makes no mention of Josh Zetumer’s reported involvement with the script, but MGM was initially looking at a February or March start date, so I don’t imagine Schenk will have to start over from page one.  Yet despite the hubbub over Michael Fassbender‘s candidacy to play the cyborg police officer, no cast is locked in.  So Schenk should have some time to craft a solid shooting script in time for a production later in the year.

Following the news that Brazilian director Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) is on the shortlist of candidates to direct Fox’s The Wolverine comes word that he’s poised to direct the political action film Tri-Border.  The film centers on a DEA agent from Boston who gets reassigned to Paraguy after busting the son of a US senator. The story will “explore the ins-and-outs of the different crime organizations and law enforcement agencies in the tri-border zone, as the agent strives to understand how the place works in order to capture his ticket back home, a leading drug dealer.”

Heat Vision reports that Padilha is currently in the region with screenwriter Nick Schenk (Gran Tornio) conducting researching. Padilha is self-fincancing the flick, and they hope to have a script completed by August. The director is also attached to the Robocop remake, and last we heard Padihla said they will start production on that film “when the script is good enough.” The tri-border region between Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay is the setting for another film in development, Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal’s Triple Frontier. However, that film is currently on hold while the two move forward with their timely film centered on the hunt, and subsequent death, of Osama Bin Laden.

For me, the greatest outcome of The King’s Speech‘s success was getting to know screenwriter David Seidler — the wittiest, most eloquent interviewee on the press circuit in 2010.  One Oscar later, and Seidler is rightfully in demand.  He just signed on to write for two projects: the family drama The Judge and the WWII tale Games of 1940.

Nick Schenk (Gran Torino) wrote the original script for The Judge, which centers on an attorney who returns home for his mother’s funeral — he learns that his father who suffers from Alzheimer’s is suspected of murder.  Warner Bros. has hired Seidler to rewrite the screenplay.  David Dobkin (Fred Claus) will direct The Judge and produce with Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey.
