
While we now have the release schedule for Marvel’s second wave of films, we might just happen to have an early logline for what may be their most ambitious project, Guardians of the Galaxy. Get your heaping spoon of salt ready to take with this news because screenwriter Chris McCoy was just hired a short time ago, with a previous draft turned in by Nicole Perlman. What we know for a certainty at this point is that the film will include Drax the Destroyer, Groot, StarLord, Rocket Raccoon and Gamora, and that the film will release on August 1st, 2014. Progress marches on for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy as the superheroic studio has tapped three-time Black List scribe Chris McCoy for a script rewrite. The first pass on the space adventure film was turned in by Nicole Perlman, a graduate of Marvel’s writing program (which no longer exists). Perlman’s previous projects included Challenger, a draft about the 1986 shuttle disaster and an untitled project centering on Neil Armstrong. While she clearly has the space angle down, McCoy’s efforts have been positively singled out for their “quirky comedic bents.” More on McCoy and Guardians of the Galaxy after the jump.

Though Marvel was likely planning to unveil one or both of its “unannounced films in development” at the upcoming Comic-Con panel, it appears the cat may have been let out of the bag. We previously learned that one of Marvel’s two in-development mystery films might be Black Panther, and now it looks like that “Untitled Marvel Film” slated for release in 2014 could be none other than Guardians of the Galaxy.
