From acclaimed Danish filmmaker Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and screenwriter J.H. Wyman (Fringe), the crime drama Dead Man Down tells the story of two strangers who are bound together by their mutual obsession with revenge.  Victor (Colin Farrell) is a mysterious man who has infiltrated the crime empire run by ruthless kingpin Alphonse (Terrence Howard) for his own very definite reasons, while his neighbor Beatrice (Noomi Rapace) wants Victor’s help to carry out her own plans for retribution.

At the film’s press day, director Niels Arden Oplev and writer/producer J.H. Wyman talked about what this film brings to the revenge genre, never wanting to talk down to an audience, assembling such a talented cast, and using Google Earth for location scouting.  Oplev also talked about what made him want to direct the pilot for the CBS adaptation of Stephen King’s Under the Dome and why the Flatliners remake appealed to him, while Wyman talked about what inspired the futuristic cop drama that he’s doing for Fox with J.J. Abrams.   Check out what they had to say after the jump.

DEAD MAN DOWN Review

For a movie with two characters pursuing separate revenge stories, Niels Arden Oplev‘s Dead Man Down, manages to find a way to turn vendettas into plodding and tedious chores.  The film lacks the courage of its convictions, and when it writes itself into a corner, it simply refuses to acknowledge the shortcomings of the script, and trudges on to the next bland scene.  Oplev does seem to enjoy the cunning and violence his protagonist inflicts on the bad guys, but the revenge is so cliché that there’s no weight to any of the actions.  Vengeance has never been so dull.

The conveniently-timed recent announcement that director Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) would be helming a remake of Joel Schumacher’s 1990 thriller Flatliners (that originally starred Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt and Billy Baldwin) meant that we could get an update directly from him while at the press day to talk about his next theatrical release, Dead Man Down.

While we will run what he had to say about that film closer to its March 8th release date, we did want to share what he had to say about his involvement with the Flatliners remake, why he’s intrigued by the project, and what made him want to direct the pilot for the CBS adaptation of the Stephen King novel, Under the Dome, about an invisible force field descends upon a small town in the northeastern part of the United States.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

The Flatliners remake may have found a director.  Back in August of 2011, Sony Pictures tapped Source Code scribe Ben Ripley to pen the screenplay for a remake of Joel Schumacher’s 1990 thriller Flatliners, and now Bloody Disgusting reports that The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo director Niels Arden Oplev is attached to take the helm.  The original flick stars a very young Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt, and Billy Baldwin and tells the story of a group of medical students who willingly induce clinical death in order to find out if there’s anything on the other side.

Oplev makes his English-language directing debut next month with the thriller Dead Man Down starring Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace, and he’ll also be helming the pilot for CBS’ TV series adaptation of the Stephen King novel Under the Dome.  Hit the jump to watch the trailer for Schumacher’s Flatliners.

FilmDistrict has released a new featurette and clip from director Niels Arden Oplev’s (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) crime thriller Dead Man Down.  The film stars Colin Farrell as Victor, the right-hand-man for a New York crime lord (Terrence Howard) who seeks revenge against his boss following the death of his wife and daughter.  When a victim (Noomi Rapace) blackmails Victor into getting some revenge of her own against the crime lord, the two get caught up in the fallout.  The clip shows a Rear Window-esque view of Farrell involved in some sort of fight, while the featurette highlights Rapace’s character.  It’s a great introduction to Rapace as an actress and her character, as Oplev, Farrell, and Howard talk about what she brings to the film.

The first trailer has snuck online for Dead Man Down, an action thriller from writer J.H. Wyman (Fringe) and director Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – 2009).  Dead Man Down stars Colin Farrell (Seven Psychopaths) as Victor, a right hand man for a New York crime lord who seeks vengeance against his boss for the death of his wife and daughter.  When a victim (Noomi Rapace - Prometheus) blackmails Victor into getting some revenge of her own, the two get caught up in the fallout.  The trailer, if overlong, is a balanced presentation of a dramatic character story and a Hollywood shoot em up.  Dead Man Down might have just nudged its way into my “Most Anticipated” list of early 2013.

Also starring Dominic Cooper (The Devil’s Double) and Terrence Howard (Iron Man), Dead Man Down opens theatrically March 8th.  Hit the jump to watch the first trailer.

DEAD MAN DOWN Starring Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace Set for Release on April 5, 2013

Director Niels Arden Oplev’s (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) revenge thriller Dead Man Down now has a release date.  The film stars Colin Farrell as a mobster’s hitman out for revenge who teams up with a crime victim also seeking retribution to fulfill their violent plot for vengeance.  Per THR, FilmDistrict will release the pic on April 5th, 2013.  As of now, the only other film slated for the same weekend is the untitled comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.

The impressive cast for Dead Man Down also includes Terrence Howard and Dominic Cooper, and Farrell is looking to have quite the run of films in the near future.  He stars later this year in Total Recall, followed by In Bruges director Martin McDonaugh’s Seven Psychopaths alongside Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken.  He’s currently still filming Dead Man Down, but he recently entered talks to star in Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks with Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson.

Terrence Howard Lands Villain Role Opposite Colin Farrell in DEAD MAN DOWN

With production looming closer on the revenge thriller Dead Man Down, director Niels Arden Oplev (the Swedish Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) is filling out the rest of his cast.  Colin Farrell is set as a mobster’s hitman bent on revenge and Noomi Rapace plays “a mysterious, scarred beauty” who has intimate knowledge of Farrell’s past.  A few days ago, we learned that Dominic Cooper (The Devil’s Double) is in talks to play Farrell’s partner, and now Variety reports that Terrence Howard has been set as the villain.

Howard will play “a charming but brutal crimelord who is accustomed to being feared but is thrown off guard when a mysterious tormenter (Farrell) starts sabotaging his business from within.”  Howard’s character killed Farrell’s family, hence all the pesky sabotage and revenge killing.  Howard hasn’t exactly been prolific since being replaced in the Iron Man series, but he’ll next be seen in Robert Redford’s The Company You Keep and the Jack Kerouac adaptation On the Road.

After briefly flirting with the revenge thriller Motor City, actor Dominic Cooper is now set to join Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace in the actioner Dead Man Down.  The revenge tale stars Farrell as a mobster’s hitman bent on revenge and Rapace as “a mysterious, scarred beauty” who has intimate knowledge of Farrell’s past.  Variety reports that Cooper is in talks to play a family man who works as Farrell’s partner. Niels Arden Oplev, who directed Rapace in the Swedish iteration of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, is onboard to helm the pic with Neal Moritz (Fast and Furious franchise) producing.

Cooper earned notice for his starring turn in last year’s The Devil’s Double, and also appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger and My Week with Marilyn.  He’ll next be seen in the historical documentary Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which opens this summer. Production on Dead Man Down begins later this month.

Having learned to speak English only three years ago, Swedish actress Noomi Rapace is making quite a splash in Hollywood. After well-earned global acclaim for her riveting portrayal of Lisbeth Salander in the original film adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s best-selling Millennium Trilogy (which includes The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), her first English-speaking role is as a mysterious Gypsy named Sim, in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

At the press junket for Sherlock 2, Collider got the opportunity to chat with the actress who is clearly very passionate about her craft and, while we will run the portion of the interview about that film, closer to its December 16th release, we did want to share what she had to say about her transition to American movies. She talked about working with Ridley Scott, who is one of her heroes, on the 2012 summer blockbuster Prometheus, which she recently gotten to see some of while doing ADR in London a couple weeks ago, re-teaming with her Dragon Tattoo director, Niels Arden Oplev, for Dead Man Down, starring Colin Farrell, possibly working with Brian DePalma, and that it’s looking like The Last Voyage of Demeter is not going to work out. Check out what she had to say after the jump.

Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace are set to star in the mob drama Dead Man Down. Director Niels Arden Oplev, who helmed the Swedish Girl with the Dragon Tattoo films, is onboard to direct the project (per THR) which centers on a mobster’s hitman (Farrell) who falls for a disfigured former beauty (Rapace). The pic will reunite Oplev with his Dragon Tattoo star Rapace. The actress turned heads with her bold performance in the Swedish films, landing roles in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows as a result. Farrell recently wrapped the Total Recall reboot, and is set to reteam with his In Bruges director Martin McDonagh for Seven Psychopaths.
