Today’s TIFF announcement marked the arrival of a new film from director Susanne Bier (Love Is All You Need), the thriller A Second Chance.  And now a trailer has hit online.  This movie looks really good at first glance, very tense and dour (and a little bit like a twist on some of the themes of Gone Baby Gone).

The film was written by frequent Bier collaborator Anders Thomas Jensen and stars Jamie Lannister himself,  Nikolaj Coster-WaldauUlrich Thomsen, Maria Bonnevie, Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Lykke May Andersen also appear.  Hit the jump to check out the A Second Chance trailer along with a few debut images.

HBO’s most popular TV series of all time, Game of Thrones, closed out its fourth season last night with almost certainly the show’s best finale yet.  Though traditionally the fantasy drama series has used its finales as a sort of denouement from the previous episode’s shocking events, last night’s episode packed a multitude of surprises, thrills, and emotion into a wholly satisfying 66 minutes.  Though we still have a while to wait before the show returns for season five, HBO has released a large gallery of images from last night’s episode for your perusing pleasure.  If you’re itching for a closer look at some of the more strange or impactful moments from the episode, these stills should be sufficient.

The Other Woman is a romantic comedy with a refreshing twist centering on three women (Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, Kate Upton) who discover they’ve all been three-timed by the same lying, cheating SOB (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau).  Their realization leads to an unlikely friendship as they team up to help each other get their lives back on track and teach him a lesson he’ll never forget.  Opening April 25th, the female-driven revenge comedy directed by Nick Cassavetes from a screenplay by Melissa Stack also stars Taylor Kinney and Don Johnson.

At a recent press conference, Diaz, Mann, Upton, Coster-Waldau and Kinney talked about the unique appeal of the story, the fun physical comedy and chemistry that developed on set, how Nine to Five was a huge influence, Kinney’s struggle to keep a straight face as Mann kept throwing him curve balls, Mann’s spectacular drunk and her excitement at making out with the hot guy from Game of Thrones, Coster-Waldau’s bruising scene with Upton that got cut, Upton’s reaction to working with Diaz and Mann in her feature debut, and how Diaz and the filmmakers convinced the MPAA to give the movie a PG-13 rating. Check out the interview after the jump.

HBO has released yet another trailer for the fourth season of Game of Thrones.  Watching this trailer, it’s important to remember that there are still only ten episodes, and we’ve got quite a lot of storylines on our hands.  At some point, we may want to be grateful for some character deaths if only to unburden the plot.  Of course, I say that now and then all the characters I like will probably be slaughtered.  So much for the bright side.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The show stars Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Charles Dance, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Maisie Williams, Aiden Turner, Iain Glen, Rose Leslie, Carice Van Houten, Alfie Allen, Diana Rigg, Natalie Dormer, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, and Isaac Hempstead Wright.  New cast this season include Pedro Pascal, Michiel Huisman, and Indira VarmaGame of Thrones returns on April 6th at 9pm on HBO.

There’s about to be a True Detective-sized hole in my Sunday night viewing, but thankfully there won’t be too long of a wait for more quality television.  Game of Thrones returns in April, and so HBO is seriously ramping up the marketing.  Today, they’ve released teasers focusing on the Starks, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), and Tyrion (Peter Dinklage).  There are also character posters for the Lannisters, presumably because they always pay their debts.

First Trailer for THE OTHER WOMAN Starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, and Kate Upton

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for director Nick Cassavetes’ upcoming comedy The Other Woman.  The film stars Cameron Diaz as a woman who discovers that her boyfriend (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is married and sets out trying to get her life back on track.  When she accidentally meets the wife he’s been cheating on (Leslie Mann) and strikes up a friendship, the two team up with yet another one of his affairs (Kate Upton) to plot their mutual revenge.  The film appears to be a bit of a spin on The First Wives Club, but Mann and Diaz both have solid comedic chops and Cassavetes is a pretty versatile director (his filmography ranges from The Notebook to Alpha Dog), so here’s hoping that translates to a solid revenge comedy.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer and check out the first poster.  The film also stars Nicki Minaj and Taylor KinneyThe Other Woman opens on April 25, 2014.

Comic-Con: GAME OF THRONES Panel Recap; Cast and Crew Remember the Fallen, Talk Season 4 and Participate in a Fan Q&A Along with a Surprise Guest

Game of Thrones was an odd presence at Comic-Con’s Hall H last year. On the one hand, it was an obvious inclusion. It’s hugely popular among geeks, and it can fill the room easily. But on the other hand, they had nothing to show because filming on the upcoming hadn’t begun. That also means that showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff weren’t on hand to answer questions. Instead, the panel rests entirely on the actors and their interactions with fans. I assumed we’d be getting the same thing at this year’s Comic-Con panel, but with more actors and a different moderator (Elvis Mitchell instead of author George R.R. Martin). Instead, Weiss and Benioff were on hand, they had some fun stuff to show, and aside from Mitchell’s weak, scattershot questions for the panel, it was a big improvement.

Hit the jump for a recap of the panel. Game of Thrones returns spring 2014.

MAMA Blu-ray Review

by     Posted 1 year, 59 days ago

mama-slice

Mama’s producer Guillermo del Toro understands the nature of fear as few others do. Its purity. Its simplicity. The way it cuts through all the bullshit and grabs you by the fundaments. He once said, “fear is simply the presence of something that shouldn’t be there or the absence of something that should be there.”  Everything else is details. Director Andres Muschietti takes that adage to heart with this, his feature film debut. He can’t quite find the brilliance of his producer, but he catches glimpses of it at times, and that propels Mama far past what we might otherwise expect.  Hit the jump for my review of the film on Blu-ray.
