Last week E3 2014 came to a close, but it left plenty to be excited for in the near future.  The “Big 3”, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony, all have their Next Gen systems in consumer hands, so this year was all about proving why you shouldn’t lose faith in their product.  With owners of the Xbox One, Wii U, and Playstation 4 all clamoring for games for their libraries, there are quite a few titles I think you should be on the look out for.  Click on through to see my top games and over a 100 pictures of E3 2014.

Hollywood! Adapt This: STAR FOX

by     Posted 1 year, 105 days ago

Amidst all the news of dramatic storytelling and once-in-a-lifetime performances coming out of the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, today I bring you the story of an anthropomorphic fox fighter pilot and his wingmen.  (We like to change it up a little now and then.)  Although this Nintendo property has six games in its history, we’re currently in the year that celebrates the series’ 20th anniversary without any new installments in sight.  Additionally, with the exception of a couple of short comic runs in Nintendo Power issues, the story hasn’t been adapted in any type of media beyond the video games themselves.  It’s time to change that.  Hit the jump for more.  Hollywood!  Adapt this: Star Fox.

Imagi’s Movie Pitch Reel for THE LEGEND OF ZELDA

by     Posted 1 year, 139 days ago

Nintendo has some of the most recognizable and popular characters in entertainment, which is probably why they reuse all of them to death.  But while other video game studios are falling over themselves to turn their properties into movies, Nintendo is probably still feeling burned from Super Mario Bros. even though it came out twenty years ago.  Movies like that can hurt a brand, and since Nintendo doesn’t have much going for it outside of those brands, they’re incredibly protective.  But that hasn’t stopped studios from calling, and animation studio Imagi (TMNT, Astro Boy) once put together a pitch reel for The Legend of Zelda. Nintendo passed, but an animated movie wouldn’t be a bad direction, although it also looks like it could just be a cut scene from the video game (in this case, Twilight Princess).  In all fairness, Imagi’s approach looks much better than this.

Hollywood! Adapt This: POKÉMON

by     Posted 1 year, 329 days ago

Here at Hollywood! Adapt This! we try to bring attention to obscure and vintage properties in need of a reboot or new adaptation.  Pokémon certainly doesn’t need our help gaining awareness as it’s one of the more popular properties of the last two decades, but as it approaches its 17th anniversary, the franchise could use a little freshening up.  Although there have been 14 Pokémon movies with a 15th on its way, there has yet to be a live-action feature that brings the titular pocket monsters to life on the big screen.  Hit the jump to catch ‘em all.  Hollywood! Geek Gifts: VHS and Fully Functional Nintendo Controller Coffee Tables

by     Posted 2 years, 255 days ago

Let’s face the cold, hard truth here: geeks need coffee tables.  Where else are we supposed to put our coffee/coke, video game controller, books, magazines, and feet?  The problem is, we geeks like to flaunt our nerdiness whenever possible, and there just aren’t many coffee table options that make this possible.  Enter: crafty geeks.  Two very awesome, very geek-friendly coffee tables have now come to our attention, crafted by some true visionaries in the art of coffee table-making.  The first is a collection of VHS-inspired tables, complete with scratched-out titles and “Insert This Side Into the Recorder” warnings, while the second is a fully functional Nintendo controller.

This is basically the Sophie’s Choice of coffee table decisions, as the VHS ones are simply gorgeous, but the Nintendo ones double as a table and a video game controller.  Both are beautiful works of art, though, and I highly encourage you to check them out in full detail.  Hit the jump for images and to find out how these can be yours.

Nintendo Announces Wii U at E3; a New Way to Play the Same Old Franchises [UPDATED]

by     Posted 3 years, 198 days ago

If Nintendo brought the same innovation to their software titles as they did to their hardware development, they wouldn’t need to make ten Mario games a year with some Zelda, Kirby, StarFox, and Metroid thrown in for good measure.  At this year’s E3, Nintendo announced their next generation console, the “Wii U”.  Let’s just get past the awful name.  Nintendo says it has to do with personalization (and then they showed nothing at their presentation to reflect that personalization) and I guess that means “iWii” and “uWii” were out.

But the name doesn’t matter.  The games matter…insofar as they show off Nintendo’s latest hardware innovation which is a controller that has a giant touchscreen in the middle.  Hit the jump for more on the Wii U, Nintendo’s E3 presentation, and my thoughts on both. [Updated: We've now added footage of the presentation, which you can check out after the jump.]

Nintendo Announces Wii Successor for 2012; Will Unveil New Console at This Year’s E3

by     Posted 3 years, 241 days ago

Over the past several weeks, there’s been heavy speculation from gaming sites that Nintendo would unveil Wii 2 (not the official name) at this year’s E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) for a 2012 release.  While Nintendo states that their policy is not to comment on speculation and rumor, they have now commented on speculation and rumor by announcing that the company will be unveiling the successor to the Wii at this year’s E3 and the system is set to be released in 2012.  No further details are available, but the model at E3 will be playable.  Nintendo president Satoru Iwata tells Reuters, “We would like to propose a new approach to home video game consoles,” which really doesn’t mean anything, but Iwata said it definitely doesn’t mean 3D since most folks don’t own 3DTVs.

Apple wasn’t the only tech giant today who had announcements to make.  Speaking at the 2011 Game Developers Conference, Nintendo revealed that their upcoming handheld console, the Nintendo 3DS, will allow for Netflix: Watch Instantly.  The console, which goes on sale in the U.S. on March 27th for $249.99, will receive a software update this summer that allows for Netflix subscribers to stream movies to the device.  Additionally, there will be a short-form video services that will allow users to view movie trailers in 3D.

The Nintendo 3DS is the latest portable device to receive Netflix video streaming.  The Watch Instantly service is already available on the Apple iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch.  The ball is in your court, Sony NGP.  Hit the jump to check out the press release.

If you ever wanted to know what TRON: Legacy would have looked like on the Nintendo NES, hit the jump.  That’s because YouTube “user” pierremanry created a very cool 24 second video called TRON: Legacy 8 bit.  He even did the awesome Daft Punk soundtrack in 8 bit.  Definitely worth watching.

by     Posted 3 years, 357 days ago

If you were a child of the 80s, you may have fond memories of the Tron video game.  But do your recall the other 8-bit creations based on the movies of the day, like Dirty Dancing, Cool Runnings, Rain Man, and Field of Dreams?  No?  Well, I suppose that’s because they didn’t exactly… exist.

But they do now, thanks to Dan Meth.  Meth has animated a clip reel for the “forgotten” Nintendo games of the 1980s.  His scope extends beyond the cinema to other cultural events of the decade, from Tank Man, to tearing down the Berlin Wall, to the Chernobyl disaster.  It’s absolutely worth a look after the jump.

by     Posted 4 years, 43 days ago

This is exactly what you think it is. With Edgar Wright’s awesome Scott Pilgrim vs. The World hitting Blu-ray and DVD today, I figured you might want something to spice it up a bit. The film, an adaptation of the fantastic Bryan Lee O’Malley graphic novel series, was incredibly unique and seems destined to be one of those, “You haven’t seen it!? Oh, let’s watch it now,” type of movies. Now you can say the same about your Blu-ray case. Hit the jump to grab the exclusive printable NES-inspired Blu-ray insert by Adam Lowe, aka DudeImbibes, for Scott Pilgrim and what he had to say about creating it.

E3 Day 2: Nintendo Changes the Game with the 3DS, Plus The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, More

E3 slice The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword 3DS

Leave it to Nintendo to succeed where Hollywood has failed. For the past year, everyone in the movie industry had been talking about 3D. All our movies are being released in 3D, all our best filmmakers are either shooting or considering 3D and it seems that only one thing is between the third dimension in film going and total domination: Those pesky glasses. Well, at E3 2010 in Los Angeles, California, Nintendo introduced the Nintendo 3DS. It’s just your run of the mill, even your baby sister has one, Nintendo DS portable gaming system with one major difference. It displays 3D without the glasses.

I waited over an hour to play with the Nintendo 3DS and then an additional hour to play the most anticipated Wii game of 2011, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. And that was just the beginning of an important Wednesday at E3. Hit the jump for more and don’t forget to check our our extensive gallery and coverage from Tuesday.

E3 2010 slice

Earlier today I attended the opening day of E3 2010.  While the last few years had E3 toning down the excess, this year was a return to lavish parties with organizers burning hundred dollar bills in the streets.  Okay, maybe not that last part.  But this year really is the return of E3 being a monstrous spectacle of noise and commotion, as once you’ve spent a few hours on the convention floor,  you really want a break from everything.  However, with so many of you not being able to gain access to the convention floor, I figured the best thing I could do was take a ton of photographs, so you could see what the convention was like for yourself.

What I decided to do was post the images as I shot them.  That way you can see the lines to get in and also observe the convention floor as I experienced it.  If you’re looking for booth babes, I’ve got them.  If you want to see what the Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony booths were like, I’ve got that too.  But what I also tried to capture was a lot of the little things that perhaps some of the other sites might have missed….like Tron video game controllers!  I’ve posted over 100 high-resolution images from E3 2010, so hit the jump to check them out!
