FX Renews Spy Drama THE AMERICANS for a Second Season

Just four episodes into its inaugural season, FX has already granted its spy drama series The Americans a 13-episode order for a second season.  The show has garnered a lot of critical acclaim and is backed by strong performances from its leads, Keri RussellMatthew Rhys and Noah Emmerich.  According to the network, the series premiere was the most-watched debut in FX’s history, with 5.11 million viewers tuning in.  The network is also reporting ratings gains every week, making The Americans a bona fide hit.

The show, created by Joe Weisberg (a former CIA agent), takes place in 1981 just after Ronald Reagan’s election, and follows two embedded KGB spies, Elizabeth and Philip Jennings, (Russell and Rhys) who spent years preparing to become “typical” Americans so they could help out their government from U.S. soil.  Though Elizabeth struggles with the emotional aspects of assimilation, Philip seems to be developing some positive feelings for the land they were bred to hate.  In addition to the spy elements, the show also focuses on the newly budding relationship between the two leads, who were forced into a marriage for appearances sake, but have only now begun to see each other as more than business partners.  Hit the jump for more on the series, and click here to catch up on my recaps.

FX Orders 13-Episode First Season of Spy Pilot THE AMERICANS Starring Keri Russell

FX has made a commitment to order the spy pilot The Americans to series.  The hourlong drama stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as two KGB spies posing as a married American couple in the suburbs of Washington DC in the 1980s.  Here’s how FX describes the show:

The arranged marriage of Phillip (Rhys) and Elizabeth Jennings (Russell), who have two children who know nothing about their parents true identity, grows more passionate and genuine by the day, but is constantly tested by the escalation of the Cold War and the intimate, dangerous and darkly funny relationships they must maintain with a network of spies and informants under their control

The relationship between the two is complicated by Rhys’ growing affinity for American values, and the arrival of a new neighbor who is actually an FBI agent working counter intelligence.  FX has ordered a 13-episode first season of the show, which will debut in early 2013.  Gavin O’Connor (Warrior) directed the pilot.  Hit the jump to read the full press release.

SUPER 8 Blu-ray Review

by     Posted: November 30th, 2011 at 5:01 am

JJ Abrams—the mastermind of such mint television shows as LOST, Alias, and sci-fi geek favorite Fringe—has earned the bulk of his following through work on television, but over the past half-decade, the dude’s also been involved with some pretty mint films, as well:  Mission: Impossible 3 (which many consider the most mint of the Mission: Impossible films), Cloverfield (which Abrams didn’t direct, but had a strong hand in), and—most recently—this summer’s Super 8, the mint story of six amateur-filmmaker kids caught up in a mysterious alien-coverup in Smalltown, America.  The film earned just as many fans as it did detractors when it debuted a few months ago, and I was curious to find out if the film played better (or worse) at home.  Keep on reading to find out what I learned from the Super 8 Blu-ray, after the jump.

With writer/director J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 opening next week, Paramount has released over twenty new images and you can check them out after the jump.  Here’s the synopsis:

In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

With the embargo lifted, I can tell you Super 8 was great and it made me feel like a kid again.  If I was 12, Super 8 would probably be my favorite movie.  It really deserves the Amblin logo at the beginning…

New TV Spot for SUPER 8

While I’m not crazy about posting TV spots (if you watch TV, you’re gonna see them and see them often), footage for J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 has been so scarce that I figure this one is worth sharing.  What’s new in this spot that you didn’t see in the trailer?  Cars are missing their fuse boxes and electrical systems!  Kids screaming “Guys, watch out!” and “Oh my God!”  The trailer may have depicted the movie as a nice throwback to Spielberg’s 80s Amblin films, but this TV spot is all about heart-pounding action.

Hit the jump to check out the TV spot.  Super 8 stars Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Ron Eldard, Noah Emmerich, Gabriel Basso, and Ryan W. Lee.  It opens June 10th.

First Trailer for Mark Ruffalo’s Directorial Debut SYMPATHY FOR DELICIOUS

The first trailer for Mark Ruffalo’s directorial debut Sympathy for Delicious has been released. The film tells the story of a paralyzed DJ (played by the film’s scribe, Christopher Thornton) who somehow acquires the ability to heal, though is unable to make himself walk. Judging from the trailer, Ruffalo definitely shows some promise as a director. Factor in the top-notch cast, and I’m very interested in seeing how this film plays out. The flick premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January where it took home the Special Jury Prize.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. Sympathy for Delicious stars Mark Ruffalo, Christopher Thornton, Orlando Bloom, Juliette Lewis, Laura Linney, Noah Emmerich and John Carroll Lynch.

When we brought you the first image from Gavin O’ Connor’s (Pride and Glory) Warrior almost one year ago, there was minimal buzz surrounding the film.  Flash-forward to the present and Warrior is a “Tom Hardy film.”  Now, thanks to Lionsgate sending us some updated information, we know that Warrior is a “Tom Hardy film” that will be released later this year on September 9th.

Briefly, Warrior tells the story of a troubled ex-marine (Hardy) who returns to his hometown.  While there, he faces obstacles regarding his broken family while preparing to fight in an MMA tournament.  To check out a detailed synopsis as well as a hi-res image from the film, hit the jump.  In addition to Hardy, Warrior also stars Nick Nolte, Noah Emmerich (The Truman Show), Joel Edgerton (Smokin’ Aces), and Jennifer Morrison (Star Trek).

J.J. Abrams Rounds Out the Main Cast of SUPER 8

slice_super_8_movie_01

I was thrilled with J.J. Abrams’ casting of the superlative Kyle Chandler (alongside Elle Fanning) in the Steven Spielberg-produced Super 8.  Neither Chandler nor Fanning is what you might call a household name, but it turns out they’ll be the most recognizable members of the cast.

According to Risky Business, Ron Eldard, Noah Emmerich, Gabriel Basso, Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee, and Zach Mills round out the main cast of the enigmatic thriller, which is said to revolve around “three siblings who discover footage of an alien in some Super 8 footage they shot.”  The relatively unknown nature of the cast makes for a fun journey on IMDB, which I try to recreate after the jump.
