Entertainment One UK has released a new Maps to the Stars trailer online.  David Cronenberg‘s latest film follows an archetypical Hollywood dynasty including a writer of self-help manuals, his wife who manages the career of their 13-year-old son, and their daughter, who was recently released from a sanatorium where she was treated for criminal pyromania.  The plot also includes Havana, an actress who wants to remake a movie that starred her now-deceased mother.  I’m still not 100% sure what to expect from Cronenberg’s new picture, but that’s one of the reasons it’s one of my must-see films at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

Hit the jump to check out the new Maps to the Stars trailer.  The film stars John Cusack, Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Robert Pattinson, Olivia Williams, and Sarah GadonMaps to the Stars opens in the U.K. and Ireland on September 26th.  There is currently no U.S. release date.

Olivia Williams and John Benjamin Hickey Talk MANHATTAN, What Attracted Them to Their Characters, Getting Swept up in Research, and More

What happens if you round up the nation’s most brilliant scientific minds, seclude them in a makeshift city in the middle of the desert, and drown their lives in secrecy?  These are the questions addressed in Manhattan, the new historical drama from creator Sam Shaw (Masters of Sex) and director Thomas Schlamme (The West Wing).  Manhattan offers a semi-fictionalized version of the infamous Manhattan Project – the clandestine research and development project that resulted in the creation of the atomic bomb.  While the events of the show are based on history, Manhattan largely steers clear of iconic figures like J.  Robert Oppenheimer and Leslie Groves, and focuses instead on the interpersonal drama between fictitious characters as they contend with the costs of secrecy and isolation.  Manhattan airs Sunday nights on WGN America.

I recently visited the set in Santa Fe, New Mexico where the labs, homes, and barracks of Los Alamos have been recreated from the ground up.  While I was there I had the chance to sit down with Olivia Williams and John Benjamin Hickey for a video interview.  They talked about the dramatic potential inherent to the story of the Manhattan Project, getting carried away with research, their characters’ fascinating marriage, why Manhattan is a dream project, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

MANHATTAN Trailer: WGN’s New Drama Series Chronicles the Making of the First Atomic Bomb

WGN has released the debut Manhattan trailer for the network’s upcoming drama series about the making of the world’s first atomic bomb.  While I was initially as skeptical of a WGN drama series as you probably are, this trailer actually doesn’t look half-bad.  Moreover, the show has veteran director Thomas Schlamme (The West Wing, Parenthood, Sports Night) at the helm and Masters of Sex alum Sam Shaw as the creator and writer.  The story takes place in 1940s Los Alamos, New Mexico and revolves around the men working secretly on the Manhattan Project as well as the toll it takes on their lives and family.  The Manhattan Project is really one of the most fascinating stories in modern history, and while there are a few moments of melodrama in this first trailer, it looks like a pretty promising take on the subject matter.

Hit the jump to watch the first Manhattan trailer.  The series stars John Benjamin Hickey, Olivia Williams, Daniel Stern, Ashley Zuckerman, Rechel Brosnahan, Katja Herbers, Alexia Fast, Christopher Denham, Harry Lloyd, Michael Chernus, and Eddie ShinManhattan premieres on WGN America July 27th.

Ahead of its Cannes Film Festival premiere, three new Maps to the Stars clips have gone online. These new clips feature most of the main characters, and they provide a sense of unease as well as Hollywood satire.  I don’t know if that will be the overall tone of the movie, but there’s definitely something quietly unnerving about these clips.

Hit the jump to check out the clips [they're slightly NSFW because of language].  The film stars John Cusack, Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Robert Pattinson, Olivia Williams, and Sarah GadonMaps to the Stars opens in France and Italy on May 21st.  A U.S. release date has yet to be announced.

A new Maps to the Stars trailer has gone online, and this one is a French, NSFW version (it’s NSFW because of language and nudity, not because it’s French).  The film follows an archetypical Hollywood dynasty including a writer of self-help manuals, his wife who manages the career of their 13-year-old son, and their daughter, who was recently released from a sanatorium where she was treated for criminal pyromania.  The plot also includes Havana, an actress who wants to remake a movie that starred her now-deceased mother.  Like yesterday’s trailer, I’m still not quite sure what to make of the movie.  There are clearly some darkly comic elements, but there’s also some serious intensity, and it’s sometimes difficult to tell where one ends and the other begins.  I can’t wait to see this flick.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film stars John Cusack, Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Robert Pattinson, Olivia Williams, and Sarah GadonMaps to the Stars opens in France and Italy on May 21st, and will probably make its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.  A U.S. release date has yet to be announced.

SABOTAGE Review

I have no problem with machismo in movies.  Machismo can be a lot of fun.  Arnold Schwarzenegger is machismo personified.  He’s macho to the point where he becomes an easy caricature.  He’s the violent badass we can all enjoy guilt-free.  But not everyone can handle that attitude, and as his co-stars demonstrate in David Ayer‘s Sabotage, the line between machismo and outright misogyny is a thin one.  The movie puts a lot of effort into its action and professional tactics, but the supporting characters aren’t just an afterthought.  They’re completely misguided weapons who earn our disdain rather than our sympathy.

A new international trailer for director David Ayer’s (writer of Training Day/director of End of Watch) Sabotage has just been released.  Based on Agatha Christie’s classic mystery novel And Then There Were None, the film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and centers on a DEA task force who heists a drug cartel safe house, only to start getting picked off one-by-one by an unknown assassin.  While I was already excited for the project due to Ayer directing, all the footage I’ve seen makes the film look even better than I expected.  It’s also a lot bloodier than anything Schwarzenegger has done in many years.  It’s a great surprise.

Open Road Films has released the first trailer for director David Ayer‘s (End of Watch) new film Sabotage.  Previously referred to as Ten, the film is loosely based on Agatha Christie’s classic mystery Ten Little Indians, as it centers on a DEA task force who heists a drug cartel safe house, only to start getting picked off one-by-one by an unknown assassin.  The film actually looks pretty great, as the fantastic ensemble makes for an excitingly hardened team led by Arnold Schwarzenegger, who actually feels like a natural fit for the role of the group’s boss/father figure.  Intriguing story, talented director, varied and charming ensemble—Sabotage is looking mighty promising.

First Trailer and Poster for THE LAST DAYS ON MARS Starring Liev Schreiber

Magnet has released the first trailer and poster for director Ruairi Robinson’s sci-fi thriller The Last Days on Mars.  The film follows the crew of a Mars base that discovers fossilized evidence of bacterial life, but their unauthorized expedition leads to disaster when one of the crew members falls into a sinkhole, and the life-form they’ve discovered might still be alive.  The trailer promises an interesting twist on the Alien-esque premise, though it’s disappointing to see that it appears to give away almost the entire movie.  Nevertheless, the cast is promising and the VFX are impressive, so maybe Mars can be a saving grace following a disappointing summer of sci-fi.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster.  The film stars Liev Schreiber, Elias Koteas, Olivia Williams, Romola Garai, Johnny Harris, Goran Kostic, and Tom CullenThe Last Days on Mars will be available VOD on October 31st and hits theaters on December 6th.

Magnet has acquired the distribution rights to Ruairi Robinson‘s debut feature film, Last Days on Mars.  The sci-fi thriller follows the crew of a Mars base that discovers fossilized evidence of bacterial life, but their unauthorized expedition leads to disaster when one of the crew members falls into a sinkhole, and the life-form they’ve discovered might still be alive.  It’s a solid premise for a flick, and the great cast includes Liev Schreiber, Elias Koteas, Olivia Williams, Romola Garai, and Tom Cullen.  I’m also interested in checking it out based on Robinson’s creepy 2011 short, “BlinkyTM”.

Hit the jump for the press release and to see the first image from the movie, which debuted at the Director’s Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival.  Last Days on Mars will be released on VOD later this year.  I’ve also included “BlinkyTM” for those who haven’t seen it.

David Ayer’s TEN Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger Set for Release on January 24, 2014; New Image Unveiled

Director David Ayer’s (End of Watch) upcoming action thriller Ten just nabbed a release date, but those itching to get a look at the film anytime soon will be sorely disappointed.  Open Road Films announced today that Ten will be released on January 24, 2014, which for you mathematicians out there is about 13 months away.  The film is loosely based on Agatha Christie’s classic mystery Ten Little Indians, as it centers on a DEA task force who heists a drug cartel safe house, only to start getting picked off one-by-one by an unknown assassin.  The impressive ensemble cast is lead by Arnold Schwarzenegger, with Sam Worthington, Joe Manganiello, Harold Perrineau, Terrence Howard, Josh Holloway, Max Martini (Revenge), Olivia Williams (Anna Karenina), and Mireille Enos (The Killing) rounding things out.

Currently no other film is slated for that same weekend in January 2014, but Open Road has also released a slightly new image from the film.  It’s incredibly similar to the first image of Schwarzenegger that was previously released, but this photo shows the actor striking a different (though no less intimidating) pose.  Hit the jump to read the press release and to take a look at the new image.
