Christopher McQuarrie brings us a violent and exciting film with a great lead character in Jack Reacher.  Tom Cruise plays the title character based on the series of novels by Lee Child, an ex-army cop who has gone off the grid and resurfaces to help solve a quintuple murder.  He enlists the help of lawyer Helen Rodin (Rosamund Pike) who has decided to defend the prisoner, despite the overwhelming objection of her father, the D.A. (Richard Jenkins) and police detective Emerson (David Oyelowo).  For more on the film, here’s six clips, over twenty images, positive early reviews, and all our previous coverage.

At the recent press day in New York, I had the chance to speak to McQuarrie about the book he based the screenplay on, how Cruise came to play Jack Reacher, what it was like to work with Werner Herzog, deleted scenes, the status of Mission Impossible 5, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

New Trailer for JACK REACHER Starring Tom Cruise

A new trailer for director Christopher McQuarrie’s thriller Jack Reacher has been released.  Like the teaser trailer, the new trailer is predicated on whether or not you can buy Tom Cruise as a bad-ass.  Not an action hero—the character even says he’s not a hero—but as a take-no-prisoners, borderline anti-hero.  Personally, I’m just not seeing it.  I like the premise of an army investigator looking into the framing of a sniper, and I’ll show up simply to see Werner Herzog play the villain, but ultimately, Jack Reacher is looking like it will suffer from seriously miscasting its title character.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Robert Duvall, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, and David Oyelowo.  Jack Reacher opens December 21st.

A new image from Jack Reacher has gone online.  Based off the Lee Child novel One Shot, the Christopher McQuarrie-directed film stars Tom Cruise as the eponymous ex-military investigator who’s is tasked with tracking down a serial sniper.  I haven’t read One Shot, and I don’t know how much McQuarrie’s film differs from the book, so someone will have to tell me if Duvall’s character only has one eye or if this image just catches him in mid-wink.  As we reported last September, Duvall has a small but pivotal role which is significant to Reacher’s investigation.

The Russian trailer for Jack Reacher went online last week, but now we have it in English.  For those unfamiliar with the film, it’s based on the novel One Shot by Lee Child, and stars Tom Cruise as the titular ex-military investigator who is tasked with tracking down a serial sniper. Watching this trailer, it’s difficult to see Cruise as the “tough guy.”  Yeah, he can kick-ass, but he doesn’t come off as imposing.  Because of his physique, he can threaten from an intellectual standpoint.  He plays guys who know where to hit you as opposed to characters who will just beat the living snot of you.  The trailer makes Reacher look like any other Tom Cruise hero except he doesn’t smile.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and two hi-res images.  The film also stars tars Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall, Richard Jenkins, David Oyelowo, and Werner HerzogJack Reacher opens December 21st.

First Trailer for JACK REACHER Starring Tom Cruise

The first trailer is online for The Way of the Gun-director Christopher McQuarrie’s Jack Reacher, starring Tom Cruise.  Unfortunately, it’s lost in translation unless you happen to speak Russian.  Basically, the guy in the hospital bed is narrating how badass Jack Recaher is; Cruise himself confirms it later on with no translation necessary.

An adaptation of the Lee Child novel, One Shot, Jack Reacher is the title character, an ex-military investigator who uses his imposing physical size (6’5”, 250lbs) and service experience to track down a sniper.  Jack Reacher also stars Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall, Richard Jenkins and David Oyelowo, along with Werner Herzog as the villain.  The film is scheduled to open on December 21st, 2012.  Hit the jump to see the trailer.

The first image of Tom Cruise in director Christopher McQuarrie’s adaptation of the Lee Child novel One Shot has been released, and it’s…Tom Cruise standing in the middle of a street. Now titled simply Jack Reacher, Cruise stars as the titular ex-military investigator who is tasked with tracking down a serial sniper.  McQuarrie had this to say regarding his take on the character:

“Someone asks him at one point in the story about the difference between a military policeman and a regular cop. Reacher points out that [for military police], every suspect is a trained killer. He is free from any sort of anxiety. He is truly not encumbered by all the bullshit that makes up our daily lives. He literally and figuratively has no baggage.”

Though Tom Cruise kicking ass is certainly a plus, I’m most interested in seeing the film’s villain played by the one and only Werner Herzog.  Hopefully a trailer is on its way soon.  Hit the jump to check out the image  Jack Reacher opens on December 21st.

Paramount’s upcoming crime thriller, starring Tom Cruise, has changed its title from One Shot to Jack Reacher.  The Christopher McQuarrie film, itself an adaptation of the Lee Child novel, “One Shot,” stars Cruise in the now title role.  In the novel, Jack Reacher is an ex-military investigator tasked with tracking down a serial sniper.  Known for his imposing size (6’5”, 250 lbs), Cruise was seen as an odd choice for the role, but was supported by the author himself.  Jack Reacher also stars Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, Robert Duvall, David Oyelowo and Werner Herzog as the villain.  Keep an eye out over the next couple of weeks for the first trailer to drop.  Hit the jump for more on Jack Reacher, which opens this December 21st.

The Cannes Film Festival is about to get underway, and studios are rolling out their promotional material to make sure that those attending screenings of the festival’s films don’t forget about the studio releases that are still to come later this year.  Our correspondent Magdalena (who you can follow on twitter) walked around the area of the festival earlier today and snapped some photos of the posters and billboards that are on display.  In addition to a really cool banner for Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, she also brought us our first look at the Tom Cruise thriller One Shot, based on the popular Jack Reacher character book series from author Lee Child.  Moreover, there’s a pretty great set-up for the Sacha Baron Cohen comedy The Dictator outside one of the Carlton hotel.

Word of a sequel to Tony Scott’s Top Gun started bubbling up a few years ago.  At the time, most believed Tom Cruise would only be returning for a small role and that the film would center on a new young group of pilots.  Movement on the sequel began to pick up in the ensuing months, and as recently as February we learned that Peter Craig (The Town) was working on a script for the sequel that would feature Cruise in a starring role and would see Scott return as director.

Paramount President Adam Goodman recently sat down for an extended conversation with THR and he provided updates on a slew of upcoming projects including Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, World War Z, One Shot, another entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise, and the aforementioned Top Gun sequel.  Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

Last night at CinemaCon 2012, Paramount and DreamWorks Animation showed off footage from their upcoming 2012 movies including director Christopher McQuarrie‘s One Shot (starring Tom Cruise), Sacha Baron Cohen‘s The Dictator, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, Rise of the Guardians, and G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

In addition to the footage, if you’re a fan of J.J. Abrams Star Trek and anxiously awaiting the sequel, during a tribute to a retiring Paramount executive, Abrams was interviewed on set wearing a very cool Star Trek 2 crew hat.  While he was only on screen for a few seconds, it was clear he was on the deck of the Enterprise, the hat had a number 2 in the front, and I immediately wanted to own one.  Hit the jump for more.

We’ve got a few more casting stories for you this evening. First up, The Help star Octavia Spencer is in negotiations to join the cast of Diablo Cody’s untitled directorial debut. Penned by Cody, the comedy “follows a sheltered young woman (Julianne Hough) who loses her faith after a plane crash and decides to go to Las Vegas to experience the wild side of life.  On her journey, she meets an unlikely companion (Russell Brand) who inadvertently helps her find her true self.” Showblitz reports that Spencer will play a card dealer at the casino where Brand’s character works. Spencer was celebrated for her more dramatic turn in this summer’s hit drama The Help. She’s also in talks to star in the indie dramedy Smashed. Production on Diablo Cody’s untitled project (previously referred to as Lamb of God) is set to begin next Spring.

Werner Herzog to Play the Villain in ONE SHOT Starring Tom Cruise

This is some of the best casting news in just about forever.  Writer-director Werner Herzog, who has taken the occasional minor acting role in his long filmmaking career, will play the villain in Christopher McQuarrie’s adaptation of One Shot.  Tom Cruise stars in the film as retired military investigator Jack Reacher, an ex-military investigator-turned-drifter who “gets sucked into the mystery surrounding the arrest of a sniper accused of killing five random people in a shooting.”  According to Variety, “Herzog will play The Zec, an ex-prisoner of war who arranges and stages the killing and is the head of the conspiracy.”  That’s right: Herzog’s not just playing a villain.  He’s playing a villain with an awesome name.  This almost makes up for Herzog’s latest documentary, Into the Abyss.  While his acting resume may be sparse, Herzog’s best-known character is himself and I’ll be interested to see how much Herzog is in The Zec.

The film also stars Rosamund Pike, David Oyelowo, Richard Jenkins, and Robert Duvall.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.  One Shot opens February 8, 2013.

First Set Photos of Tom Cruise in ONE SHOT and Rachel Weisz in THE BOURNE LEGACY

by     Posted 2 years, 352 days ago

The first set photos from Christopher McQuarrie’s adaptation of Lee Child’s One Shot and Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Legacy have leaked online.  Since these aren’t superhero movies and we’re not trying to glance fancy costumes, there’s not much you can glean from these set photos.  Tom Cruise is playing ex-military investigator Jack Reacher in One Shot.  The character will have short hair and drive a sweet ride.  As for Weisz, we knew she would be playing “an operative from a covert government program that is even more dangerous than the Treadstone brainwashing program that hatched Bourne (Jeremy Renner),” and apparently the character will be rocking a sweet, sweet lab coat.

Hit the jump to check out the set photos.  One Shot is due out February 8, 2013 and co-stars Rosamund Pike, David Oyelowo, Richard Jenkins, and Robert Duvall. The Bourne Legacy opens August 3, 2012 and also stars Oscar Isaac, Scott Glenn, Joan Allen, Albert Finney, Stacy Keach, and Edward Norton.

Fans of Lee Child’s novel One Shot may be unhappy with Tom Cruise being cast as Jack Reacher in Christopher McQuarrie’s adaptation, but it’s getting tough to complain about the supporting cast.  Last week we reported that Richard Jenkins had joined the cast and now Variety is reporting that Oscar-winner Robert Duvall has come on board.  Variety has no details on his character beyond saying that Dvuall has a small but pivotal role which is significant to Reacher’s investigation into a sniper accused of murdering five people.

Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.  The film also stars Rosamund Pike and David Oyelowo.  One Shot is due out February 8, 2013.  As for Duvall, he recently wrapped shooting on Billy Bob Thornton’s Jayne Mansfield’s Car and the indie thriller Mississippi Wild, which stars Dakota Fanning and Ryan Donowho.
