Seth MacFarlane will not be returning to host the Oscars, at least not next year. While the Family Guy creator earned mixed reviews for his hosting duties earlier this year, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron nevertheless reached out to MacFarlane to see if he’d want to come back and host again in 2014. While the very busy MacFarlane seems like he was up to the task, scheduling issues have forced him to decline via a statement on his Twitter:
“Traumatized critics exhale: I'm unable to do the Oscars again. Tried to make it work schedule-wise, but I need sleep. However, I highly recommend the job, as Zadan and Meron are two of the most talented producers in the business. My suggestion for host is Joaquin Phoenix.”
MacFarlane is currently filming and starring in his second feature directorial effort, A Million Ways to Die in the West, and he's expected to shoot the Ted sequel later this year, which would account for the scheduling difficulties. With MacFarlane now out, who do you think should be at the helm of next year's Oscars? My vote is for Neil Patrick Harris or Hugh Jackman.

Seth MacFarlane got mixed reviews as host of the 2013 Academy Awards. But the audience grew to 40.3 million viewers over the previous year hosted by Billy Crystal ---more importantly, the audience grew younger, with 20% more 18-34 viewers. This year's telecast producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will return to oversee the 2014 Oscars and have reportedly asked MacFarlane to host again. A source tells Just Jared:
“After defending his performance, the producers reached out to Seth and invited him back to host the show again. He’s not sure if he’s going to do it, but he has to decide within the next couple of weeks.”
MacFarlane has stated he does not want to host again, tweeting "No way" shortly after the ceremony. If he changes his mind, I would like to see him try again. MacFarlane was admittedly hit-or-miss his first time around, but I would like for my generation to have a Bob Hope/Billy Crystal type---a go-to host. The most important step toward that goal is to give a natural talent several chances to refine his approach. I believe MacFarlane is qualified. Next year’s Academy Awards are set for March 2, 2014.

The Academy has announced some important dates for its 86th and 87th Academy Awards ceremonies. Next year’s Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 2nd, while 2015’s Oscars will take place on February 22nd. Nominations for the 2014 ceremony will be announced on January 16th. The move for the 2014 Oscars means there will be yet another extended amount of time between when the nominations are announced and when the actual Oscars take place, so ready yourselves for yet another long awards season.

The prolonged period between the nominations and the ceremony means that voters should have enough time to see everything, but it also means that the studios’ campaigns get pretty intense as we start hating films that we actually used to like simply because their “Oscar-worthiness” is being shoved down our throats. Nevertheless, there’s no lack of awards material set to debut later this year, so the 86th Academy Awards should be another interesting ride.

You've read our predictions, you've read all of our Oscar coverage, and tonight the winners of the 85th Academy Awards will be announced. As I've done in past years, I will be live-blogging the ceremony and some of the red carpet. Seth MacFarlane is hosting this year's ceremony, and I've got a good feeling that he'll do a solid job. Of course, it's the Oscars so there will be plenty of silliness both intended and unintended, and I'll be providing my thoughts on all of it throughout the night.
My live-blogging will kick in around 8:00pm (EST) and then just keep refreshing the page for my latest thoughts on the 85th Academy Awards. I’ll also be tweeting (cross-platform mockery!), and you can follow me on Twitter at @MattGoldberg. We're almost at the finish line of the 2013 awards race. Let's brave Hollywood's self-congratulatory ceremony together. The ceremony begins at 8:30pm (EST).

[All times Eastern]

8:00pm -- It begins. Jennifer Aniston is doing empty red carpet banner and wearing a nice dress. It's going to be a long night...

8:03pm -- Is there something wrong with Kristin Chenoweth's stomach? Is she trying to keep Kuato in?

8:04pm -- Halle Berry is proud to be a part of the Bond franchise. And now she's driving away in her invisible car.

8:06pm -- George Clooney is preparing for his role as sexy Santa Claus.

8:10pm -- I could switch over to E! for more red carpet coverage, but WHY.

8:12pm -- Anne Hathaway's dress is awful, therefore I am better than ...

Alas, we’ve come to the end. The 85th Academy Awards will take place tomorrow evening, after which the past year of maneuvering, campaigning, and controversy-drumming will be rendered obsolete as we wipe the slate clean and start the next awards season cycle anew. Over the past six days, we’ve been taking a look back at the 2012 awards race in a number of categories, chronicling the ebbs and flows that have led us to today. This past year was one of the more crazy awards seasons in recent memory, but at least it’s been interesting. Today we close out our Road to Oscar feature with the final category, Best Picture. Hit the jump to read on, and click here to read our predictions for tomorrow night's ceremony.

Though most big Oscar contenders are released in the latter part of the year, our first bona fide Best Picture candidate hit theaters last May. Director Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom was hailed as one of the filmmaker’s best films, and prognosticators kept their eye on the pic as we headed toward the fall. May also saw the release of another surprise contender with The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The film’s impressive cast and positive reviews struck a chord with the older-skewing Academy members, and the pic would remain on the shortlist of Best Picture contenders right up until the nominees were announced.

The small-budget fantasy drama Beasts of the Southern Wild was also a summer contender, as the film made a splash at the 2012 ...

Adam and I briefly talked about our predictions on the latest episode of The Collision, but we know your Oscar pool needs more guidance. It's a rough year, and a lot of Oscar ballots are going to go down in flames. Last year, I played the wild card on my Oscar predictions and lost big, but this year I'm going to try and be a bit savvier. However, I'm going up against Collider's Oscar guru, so if you're going to copy one of our cheat-sheets, it's probably best to cheat off Adam.

Hit the jump for who we think deserves to win and who we think will win at the 85th Academy Awards. Be sure to come back Sunday night when I'll be live-blogging the ceremony. Adam and I will also be tweeting the Oscars, so be sure to follow us @AdamChitwood and @MattGoldberg, respectively.

For proof that 2012 was a nutty year for awards contenders, look no further than the Best Director category. Over the past few days, we’ve been looking back how the ebbs and flows of the past 12 months have shaped the awards race in a number of categories, and one of the most dynamic shifts came with Best Director. After the jump, we run down how the race for Oscar glory progressed over the past few months to give us the five nominees who will be vying for the gold on Oscar Sunday. Hit the jump to read on.

Predicting the Best Director category normally goes hand-in-hand with predicting Best Picture, and it’s tough to get an idea of who the contenders might be until the awards season is in full swing. That said, the summer did give us a couple of possible Oscar contenders, though their fate as viable candidates was far from sealed. Following the hubbub over the Academy’s snub for The Dark Knight for Best Picture, we’ve seen a marked shift in how they approach awards season. They expanded the Best Picture category to 10 contenders in order to allow more varied (read: commercial) fare to make the cut, and so all eyes were on director Christopher Nolan’s trilogy capper The Dark Knight Rises to see if it would be a major player in the awards race.

Though the film was met with generally positive reviews, The Dark Knight Rises didn’t receive the enthusiastic acclaim that The Dark Knight ...

During the Academy Awards broadcast last year, the good folks at Mondo dropped a few gorgeous prints from films that were nominated. They’re doing the same thing this year, and today they’ve unveiled the first three posters in their second annual Oscar series: Laurent Durieux’s The Master, Olly Moss’ Les Miserables, and DKNG’s ParaNorman. All three posters are unsurprisingly excellent, but I’m absolutely mesmerized by Durieux’s entrancing print for The Master. It’s a stunning piece of work, and I’m sure many of you will be angling to nab a copy during Sunday’s ceremony.

Mondo says that many more posters will be unveiled during the awards show broadcast, when said prints will also go on sale. Hit the jump to preview these first three prints, and start preparing to do some very fast typing on Sunday night. As always, follow @MondoNews for the on-sale announcements.

A new batch of presenters has been announced for the upcoming 85th Academy Awards ceremony, and we figured now would be a good time to round up all of the presenters announced thus far in one handy story. It was announced today that Jane Fonda, Kristen Stewart, Jennifer Garner, and Kerry Washington have joined the rather long list of presenters for the ceremony, which will be hosted by Seth Macfarlane.

We already learned that Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, and Mark Ruffalo from The Avengers will be presenting together, and Macfarlane has put together a tribute to movie musicals from the past decade that includes Dreamgirls’ Jennifer Hudson, Chicago’s Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Les Miserables’ Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfried, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit, Helena Bonham Carter, and Samantha Barks. Hit the jump to take a gander at the entire list of presenters, and click here to catch up on all of our recent Road to Oscar series. The Oscars will be held this Sunday, February 24th, at 7pm EST on ABC.

In addition to the aforementioned names, the full list of Oscar presenters thus far includes:

	Jennifer Aniston
	Michael Douglas
	Jamie Foxx
	Paul Rudd
	Salma Hayek Pinault
	Melissa McCarthy
	Liam Neeson
	John Travolta
	Ben Affleck
	Jessica Chastain
	Jennifer Lawrence
	Halle Berry
	Sandra Bullock
	Nicole Kidman
	Reese Witherspoon
	Mark Wahlberg and Ted
	Jean Dujardin
	Christopher Plummer

	Meryl Streep

Performers at the ceremony include Adele, Dame Shirley Bassey, Norah Jones, and Barbra Streisand.

Continuing on with our “Road to Oscar” feature, today we’re going to take a look at how the race for Best Actress played out over the past 12 months. With the 85th Academy Awards taking place this coming Sunday, we figured this week would be a nice opportunity to reflect on how a number of Oscar categories got to where they are today. Join us after the jump as we break down the race for Best Actress.

Unlike Best Actor, the Best Actress race has seen some dramatic ebbs and flows over the past few months. Our first candidate of the Oscar season actually came in January with six-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis in the Sundance hit Beasts of the Southern Wild. The young actress was utterly captivating as Hushpuppy, and her performance is all the more impressive when you realize that she essentially carries the entire film.

Audiences sparked to young Wallis at Sundance and again in the summer when the film hit theaters, and while the actress’ talent was undeniable, some questioned whether the Academy would take notice or if they’d chalk her work up to good direction, given her age. Nevertheless, Wallis remained a part of the conversation in the coming months.

Early 2012 also gave way to a couple of buzzworthy performances in foreign films. The Cannes Film Festival in May saw the premiere of the French film Rust and Bone, and critics were quick to praise previous Best Actress winner Marion Cotillard for her work as a double-amputee whale trainer ...

This is one of the toughest Academy Awards in recent memory when it comes to predictions. Usually, prediction ballots live or die based on the shorts section coupled with a few surprises. But a number of major categories are up for grabs this year including Best Director and Best Supporting Actor. It looks like Argo is the favorite to nab Best Picture, but even some prognosticators are sticking with Lincoln and Silver Linings Playbook. So who can we turn to when it comes to making an accurate prediction? Puppies, of course. On Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, five puppies had the option of nine bowls of kibble, each labeled with a different Best Picture nominee. It's a highly scientific method of predicting the winner, and I wish that the puppies could vote. They'd probably do a better job than this moron of an Academy voter.

Hit the jump to check out the video, and click here to read Adam's "The Road to Oscar" series. The 85th Academy Awards will be held this Sunday at 7pm EST on ABC.

Thanks to Nathaniel for the heads up.

As Sunday’s 85th Annual Academy Awards loom closer, we’ve using this week as an opportunity to take a look back at how the past year’s Oscar race has played out in a number of categories. We first took a look at the ebbs and flows in the Best Supporting Actor category, and then we chronicled the road that lead us to the Best Supporting Actress nominees. Today we’re examining the Best Actor race, which actually seemed to be all wrapped up months before the nominees were even announced. Hit the jump to read on.

2012’s Best Actor race kicked off incredibly early with the Sundance debut of The Sessions. Star and veteran character actor John Hawkes pleasantly surprised audiences in 2010 with a very deserving Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his work in Winter’s Bone, and he looked poised for Oscar recognition once again with his transformative performance in The Sessions. In fact, many members of the press at Sundance were ready to declare him a frontrunner for Best Actor—all the way back in January.

Hawkes remained a top contender for the trophy throughout the summer, as no viable candidates materialized until the fall films started popping up. However, competition started getting stiff around September. Whenever Daniel Day-Lewis decides to grace us mere mortals with an onscreen performance we’re always blown away, so months before anyone had even seen so much as an image from Lincoln, Day-Lewis was considered a serious candidate for the Best Actor trophy. That being said, the ...

It’s hard to believe that the 85th Academy Awards are merely just a few days away, and as evidenced by our ongoing The Road to Oscar feature, it’s been a rather nutty year awards season-wise. In anticipation of the upcoming ceremony, someone has put together a nifty video montage that features footage from all 84 past Best Picture winners. It’s a fun look back at Academy history as we’re reminded which Oscar winners have stood the test of time and which ones are somewhat perplexing in hindsight (I cringed when Crash popped up).

Hit the jump to take a look at the video and see how many Best Picture winners you can name. If you’ve missed any of our Road to Oscar features thus far, click here to catch up. Look for more Oscar goodness here on Collider in the next few days including the last few Road to Oscar entries, a special Oscar episode of our podcast The Collision, and finally our predictions for the ceremony. The Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 24th on ABC at 8:30 ET.

Via Awards Daily.

With the 85th Academy Awards looming closer, we here at Collider thought now would be a good time to take a look back at Oscar race thus far. It’s been a wild and somewhat nutty 12 months, as we’ve seen numerous contenders rise and fall (and some rise back up again) in the contentious hunt for Oscar gold. We’ve already run down the ebbs and flows of the Best Supporting Actor category, and today we’ll be taking a look back and how the race played out for Best Supporting Actress.

Of all the Oscar categories this year, Best Supporting Actress sadly turned out to be one of the weakest. The race kicked off early with the Sundance premiere of The Sessions, in which previous Best Actress winner Helen Hunt was singled out for her touching work opposite John Hawkes in the character-centric drama. She was our first frontrunner in the category, seeing as how much of the Oscar fare had still yet to be seen. The spring also kicked up another unlikely candidate in Maggie Smith, as the comedy/drama The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel struck a chord with the older-skewing Academy members and became a possible dark horse in a couple of categories leading up to the nominations.

As we headed into the fall, more contenders started to surface. Following its wildly successful Toronto Film Festival screening that solidified its status as a serious Best Picture contender, Silver Linings Playbook had pundits weighing the possibility of past nominee Jacki Weaver landing a ...

We’re only a short week away from the 85th Academy Awards, and with the close of Oscar season approaching, we’d thought this would be a nice opportunity to take a look back at how some of the races have played out, chronicling the ebbs and flows of the past 12 months or so that got us to where we are today. We’re kicking things off with one of the more open categories: Best Supporting Actor.

One important thing to keep in mind when looking at the Oscars is that the race is incredibly fluid. A film could be the clear frontrunner in a category one week, then might stumble to second or even third place in the ensuing weeks. With this series of articles, we’ll be looking at exactly how much each race has changed, starting with Best Supporting Actor. Hit the jump to read on.

Every year, the Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress categories are where prognosticators look for the surprises. Though Best Picture and Best Director are usually down to two candidates or so by Oscar night, there’s always that feeling that a completely left-field choice could take home one of the supporting trophies. As such, the Best Supporting Actor race was quite wide open leading up to the nominations, and there’s still a lack of consensus surrounding which actor might finally take home the gold.

Though the majority of the contenders arrived in the fall, a couple of viable candidates surfaced last summer by way of Dwight Henry for his ...

While the Oscar-nominated animated shorts take a little time to pick up some momentum, most of these live-action nominees find a way to grab you immediately by introducing a mystery of some kind. One begins with a suicide attempt, another starts with a kidnapping, one features a man with a mysterious camera that can record shadows, and another opens with the striking image of children casually carrying around AK-47s. More than animated films, live-action short movies can provide a notice to audiences and studios that these are talented filmmakers worth putting on your radar.

Hit the jump for my reviews of the 2012 Oscar-nominated live-action short films: Henry, Asad, Death of a Shadow, Curfew, and Buzkashi Boys.

HENRY

The movie begins with a clever opening where we see the eponymous protagonist kidnapped by shadowy figures, but then drifting between time and space. One moment, he's in a strange facility, and the next moment he's in a house in World War II meeting his wife. The plot device does an excellent joy of putting you inside Henry's mind, and it brings the short to a moving conclusion that is slightly undermined by an unnecessary closing quotation.

ASAD

The sentiment is nicer than the execution. The cast is comprised of Somali refugees and there's a sweet story at the middle about the innocent protagonist breaking his streak of bad luck, but film's conclusion and the lazy symbol of "hope" it finds feels corny and unearned. In the face of tragedy and the soldiers who ruin the meager ...

I adore animation, and it bums me out that most animated features are so formulaic and safe. I understand that they have to be widely-appealing due to the high production costs, but it keeps the animated form mostly constrained to family films. The Oscar-nominated animated shorts allow us to have a peek at an animated world that can break boundaries, and show us the potential of the medium when it doesn't have to appeal to all ages. Unfortunately, most of these nominees are fairly safe, although it seems like they were all required to avoid dialogue. The majority of the shorts are still entertaining, but there's a runaway winner in the pack.

Hit the jump for my reviews of the 2012 Oscar-nominated animated short films: Paperman, Fresh Guacamole, Head over Heels, Adam and Dog, and Maggie Simpson in "The Longest Daycare".

PAPERMAN

I flat-out love this movie. I could watch it every few days, and get lost in it again and again. It's a simple story of a guy trying to get a girl's attention by throwing paper airplanes at her from the building across the street, and his attempts are constantly sweet and funny, but the film never feels slight. There's a wonderful romance to it where it's not about love at first sight per say, but it's about taking the chance to at least meet someone, and see where it could go. Director John Kahrs put together a revolutionary blend of hand-drawn animation and 3D, but even in 2D, the short ...

Even if you hate the Oscars, you'll love what artist Olly Moss has done for the official 85 Years of Oscar poster. We previously showed you individual posters by various artists for this year's Best Picture nominees, but Moss' work outshines them all. He's taken every single Best Picture winner and tried to fit them into the Oscar statue in one image. Some of these are particularly brilliant (it took me a few moments to figure out how he represented 2001's winner, A Beautiful Mind), and it's a fun game to try and guess the each year's Best Picture winner from Moss' poster alone.

We know that Gallery1988 is teaming up with the Academy for something big this Thursday through Sunday. They are giving away 100 of each of the Best Picture nominee posters, and it will be interesting to see if they do anything special with the Moss poster. More details should be announced in the next day or so. Hit the jump to check out Moss' 85 Years of Oscar poster and find out how you can buy it now. The 85th Academy Awards will be held on February 24th at 7pm EST on ABC.

Click on the poster to see the crazy level of detail, and see if you can guess the winners. Click here to go buy a digital offset poster of the Olly Moss Oscars poster from The Academy. You can also click here to see them up close.

Via Moss' official website.

Last week, BAFTA premiered special posters for their Best Picture nominees. Today, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences had followed suit by teaming up with Gallery1988 and various artists to create posters for this year's Best Picture Oscar nominees. There are some impressive posters, and I'm curious to see if they're going to go on sale at some point. The Academy's website lists the dimensions and type of production (screen print), which leads me to believe that these might be available for purchase some day. I'm sure there are plenty of readers who would love to get their hands on Mark Englert's print for Django Unchained. [Update: Gallery1988 has tweeted the following: "G1988 x The Academy. Official. 2/14 - 2/17. More soon." so it looks like you should get your wallets ready, and keep an eye on their official website.]

Hit the jump to check out the posters. The Academy Awards will be held on February 24th at 7pm EST on ABC.
