The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced today that 39 eligible songs will contend for the Best Original Song Oscar this year. Important to note is that a relatively recent rule change states that songs must be judged in the capacity that they appear in each film. In early January the voting body will get together and watch clips from each eligible movie in which the 39 songs are featured, after which they will determine the nominees. The list of eligible songs include three tracks from The Muppets, Sigur Ros frontman Jonsi’s song “Gathering Stories” (which director Cameron Crowe co-wrote) from We Bought a Zoo, and composer/songwriter/eight-time Oscar-winner Alan Menken’s “Star Spangled Man” from Captain America: The First Avenger. I’m partial to Jonsi’s work or “Man or Muppet” from The Muppets, but we’ll see how the Academy’s taste stacks up towards the end of January.

Hit the jump to check out the full list of eligible songs. The 84th Academy Award nominations will be announced on January 24th.

Friday Box Office – THE HELP Remains On Top as East Coast Hurricane Prepares to Blow Out Box Office

Summer’s penultimate weekend was never going to be a blockbuster, but now – with Hurricane Irene closing theatres up and down the Eastern seaboard – it is shaping up to be one of the worst frames of the entire year at the domestic box office.  Three new releases rolled out on Friday but reduced traffic and theatre counts from North Carolina to New York meant that none of them came close to knocking The Help out of first place.  Last weekend’s top film earned an estimated $4.4 million on its third Friday; bringing its US total up to $86.6 million in 17 days.  The revenge-thriller Colombiana was Friday’s newbie king, taking in an estimated $3.75 million, followed closely by the Guillermo del Toro-penned Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark with $3.6 million.  The Weinstein’s Our Idiot Brother closed out Friday’s top five with $2.4 million.  The uncertainty of the hurricane means that it is more difficult than usual to predict how well any of this weekend’s offerings will fare, but I can tell you that The Help is the only film that is expected to get much above $10 million by Sunday.  We’ll have an update tomorrow.

Title Friday Total
1 The Help $4,400,000 $86.6
2 Colombiana $3,750,000 $3.75
3 Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark $3,600,000 $3.6
4 Rise of the Planet of the Apes $2,585,000 $142
5 Our Idiot Brother $2,400,000 $2.4

If you’re just tuning in, a few months back we started the weekly “Top 5″ feature as a way of aggregating all of what we deem to be our best, most relevant coverage from the preceding week into one place. The hope is that you, the reader, will have already scoped all of this material out and shared it with your millions of friends (either real, virtual, or both). However, if for whatever reason some of it has fallen through the cracks, you can come here, check it out, and then share it with all of your friends (again, either real, virtual, or both). That in mind…

In this week’s installment, you’ll find all of our coverage from Steve’s Underworld: Awakening set visit and Disney’s D23 Expo, interviews for the Guillermo del Toro produced horror flick Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark and the Paul Rudd comedy Our Idiot Brother, and a slightly improved, slightly less puppet-friendly version of Yoda in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Check out brief recaps and links to all of the above after the jump.

Emily Mortimer Our Idiot Brother interview slice

It’s the end of summer and that means it’s finally time to see the films that everyone was talking about in Park City. Our Idiot Brother,  the first of the big sale items from the Sundance Film Festival, hits theaters this Friday from the newly reinvigorated Weinstein Company.  Unlike many Sundance offerings, this is an audience-friendly comedy starring Paul Rudd as the idiot sibling in question with Emily Mortimer, Rashida Jones, Zooey Deschanel and Elizabeth Banks playing the women he unintentionally tortures with his naiveté.

Recently, I sat down with Mortimer to discuss her role in the film. During our interview she told me about family dynamics, the film’s title change, her own idiot family members and teased her upcoming 3D Scorsese film, Hugo.  Hit the jump to watch.

Recently, I sat down with Jones to discuss the film. During our interview she told me about her straight-laced upbringing, her rebellious sister, the excitement of mainstream success, how she doesn’t sing or dance in The Muppets, how Rudd is a different kind of idiot than Fozzie Bear, the origins of Parks and Recreation and how winking at the camera is different from playing it straight.  Hit the jump to watch.

4 Movie Clips From OUR IDIOT BROTHER

Four clips from Our Idiot Brother have gone online.  I dug the film when I saw it at Sundance (back when it was called “My Idiot Brother”–to hell with you, Possessive Singular!) and it’s a great showcase for Rudd who is too often stuck playing the straight man.  The film’s also got a terrific supporting cast that includes Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Rashida Jones, Adam Scott, Emily Mortimer, Steve Coogan, Kathryn Hahn, and T.J. Miller (who steals almost every scene he’s in).

Paul Rudd Pitches Marketing Ideas for OUR IDIOT BROTHER to Harvey Weinstein

The Weinstein Company picked up My Idiot Brother at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and changed the title to Our Idiot Brother.  But star Paul Rudd believes the studio can do so much more.  In a new Funny or Die video, Rudd comes into Harvey Weinstein’s office and starts pitching marketing ideas.  You’ll laugh at these ideas now but I’m sure we’ll be seeing all of them being used in less than ten years now.  Paul Rudd will jump out of the back of your taxi and Morgan Freeman will be your driver.  The future is strange and wondrous.

The Weinstein Company has released a new trailer for the Paul Rudd comedy Our Idiot Brother (formerly titled My Idiot Brother).  Rudd stars as a sweet but overly-naive guy who has an unfortunate run-in with the law, his ex-girlfriend won’t let him have his dog Willie Nelson back, and his sisters (Elizabeth Banks, Emily Mortimer, and Zooey Deschanel) reluctantly take him in only to have his naiveity accidentally reveal the hypocrisies and shortcomings of their own lives.  I enjoyed the film when I saw it at Sundance and it’s worth checking out when it hits theaters on August 26th.

The first trailer for the comedy Our Idiot Brother has been released. The film first premiered at Sundance and boasts a wildly impressive cast that includes Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer and Rashida Jones. Directed by Jesse Peretz (The Chateau), the film tells the story of a ne’er-do-well brother who successively barges into the lives of his three sisters.

The trailer hits all the right notes, with the pitch-perfect Rudd coming off as equal parts lovable and pathetic. The supporting cast looks fantastic as well. Release Dates for OUR IDIOT BROTHER, I DON’T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT, APOLLO 18, and PIRANHA 3DD

The Weinstein Company has announced release dates for four of their upcoming films.  Deadline reports that  Our Idiot Brother (formerly My Idiot Brother—I guess “our” tested better with focus groups) is set for August 26th.  The adaptation of Allison Pearson’s novel I Don’t Know How She Does It will replace Piranha 3DD on September 16th, and Piranha 3DD is swimming to Thanksgiving week with a November 23rd where the marketing writes itself.  Finally, the biggest release date shift is Apollo 18.  The found-footage sci-fi thriller was set to have a lightning-fast turn around and hit theaters earlier this month.  That obviously didn’t happen and TWC shifted the date to April 22nd.  Now TWC has rescheduled the film all the way back to January 6, 2012.  Ouch.

Hit the jump for a synopsis on each film and what they’ll be going up against on their new release dates.
