This weekend may have hosted four new titles, but audiences showed love to only one. Lee Daniels’ The Butler – a film that was barely on the radar when the summer began – opened in first place with an estimated $25 million. That left Kick-Ass 2 with a very disappointing fourth-place start and the biopic Jobs a distant seventh. Meanwhile, with just $3.5 million from 2,459 locations, new release Paranoia failed to make the top ten entirely.

 Title Weekend Total
1.  Lee Daniels’ The Butler $25,010,000 $25
2.  We’re the Millers $17,780,000 $69.5
3.  Elysium $13,600,00 $55.9
4.  Kick-Ass 2 $13,568,000 $13.5
5.  Planes $13,141,000 $45
6.  Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters $8,375,000 $38.9
7.  Jobs $6,700,000 $6.7
8.  2 Guns $5,600,000 $59.2
9.  The Smurfs 2 $4,600,000 $56.9
10.  The Wolverine $4,425,000 $120.4

TOP 5: KICK-ASS 2, Rare Footage from Jerry Lewis’ THE DAY THE CLOWN CRIED, Vin Diesel Voicing Groot in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY?, PARANOIA, D23 Expo

I hate to wish my life away, but with both The World’s End and You’re Next hitting theaters I really can’t help but look ahead to next weekend. That’s to say nothing of the pics opening this week (I plan on checking out Kick-Ass 2 next Wednesday), rather that the aforementioned two are a pair of my most anticipated of the soon-to-end summer movie season. In fact, You’re Next has been on my must-see list since Matt reviewed it at TIFF 2011 nearly two full years ago. In addition to the excitement associated with finally seeing the movie, my latent resentment of Goldberg for having seen it a lifetime ago will finally come to a close which is nice because I could use the sleep.

But enough about next weekend. Let’s focus on the here and now. This week’s Top 5 includes a slew of Kick-Ass 2 interviews, rare footage from Jerry Lewis‘s unreleased film The Day the Clown Cried, Vin Diesel all but confirming that he’s voicing Groot in Marvel’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy, Paranoia interviews with Harrison Ford and more, and a recap of our coverage from Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim. As you might expect, a brief recap and link to each of the above can be found after the jump.

Friday Box Office: THE BUTLER Shows KICK-ASS 2 the Door; JOBS Biopic Underwhelms

Earlier this week Universal’s Kick-Ass 2 was the clear frontrunner for weekend box office glory but, what a difference a day makes. The R-rated action-sequel earned an estimated $5.8 million from 2,381 locations for second place on Friday, but should fall to third by Sunday. Just as Kick-Ass 2 descended, Lee Daniels’ The Butler was on the rise. With a big assist from co-star Oprah Winfrey, the TWC release claimed a Friday estimate of $8.3 million from 2,933 locations and a new weekend target of $25 million or higher. That would put the prestige pic in the same range as The Help – the Oscar-winner that lit up 2011’s late-summer box office.

Though it would be difficult to tell from the top five chart, Friday’s box office hosted two additional new releases: Jobs and Paranoia.  The biopic starring Ashton Kutcher as Apple co-founder Steve Jobs took in $2.6 million from 2,381 locations and sixth-place on Friday. Paranoia fell flat with just $1.3 million from 2,459 venues. Based on Friday’s estimate, the thriller starring Liam Hemsworth and Harrison Ford will struggle to top $4 million through Sunday.   Check back tomorrow for full details.

 Title Friday  Total
1.  Lee Daniels’ The Butler $8,300,000  $8.3
2.  Kick-Ass 2 $5,800,000  $5.8
3.  We’re the Millers $5,420,000  $57.1
4.  Elysium $3,900,000  $46.2
5.  Planes $3,614,000  $35.5

With director Robert Luketic’s thriller Paranoia opening this weekend, I recently spoke to some of the cast here in Los Angeles.  The film stars Liam Hemsworth as Adam Cassidy, an entry-level employee at a corporation run by Nicholas Wyatt (Gary Oldman).  When Wyatt turns Cassidy into a corporate spy against rival Jock Goddard (Harrison Ford), Cassidy is drawn into a dangerous web of intrigue.  The pic gives Hemsworth his first leading role, and it’s got some great actors in supporting roles like Lucas Till, Amber Heard, Embeth Davidtz, Julian McMahonRichard DreyfussAngela Sarafyan, and Josh Holloway in supporting roles.  For more on the film, watch these clips or the trailer.

During my video interview with Amber Heard, she talked about working with Ford and Oldman, whether she’s good with technology, what she collects, who has made her laugh the most on set, and what it was like working for McG on Three Days to Kill.  Hit the jump to watch.

Director Robert Luketic’s high stakes thriller, Paranoia, explores a deadly world of greed and deception in which two powerful, dueling global tech billionaires (Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman) with a complicated past will stop at nothing to destroy each other.  An ambitious young superstar (Liam Hemsworth) becomes trapped in their dangerous game of corporate espionage only to realize that he’s in far too deep for them to let him walk away.  Opening August 16th, the film also stars Gary Oldman, Amber Heard, Lucas Till, Embeth Davidtz, Julian McMahon, Josh Holloway and Richard Dreyfuss.

At the film’s recent press day, Luketic, Ford, Hemsworth, Heard and Till talked about updating the film adaptation based on the New York Times bestseller by Joseph Finder, what drew them to their characters, why the film’s underlying themes of connectivity, personal privacy and liberty are so relevant today, how the value of hard work has changed for the next generation, the complex relationship between ambition and morality, and their personal relationship with technology.  Ford also discussed going toe-to-toe with Oldman and why his character’s mantra of “competition breeds innovation” doesn’t apply to acting.  Read the full interview after the jump.

Relativity Media has released four clips and eight high-resolution images from director Robert Luketic’s upcoming thriller Paranoia. The pic gives Hemsworth the chance to lead his own film, though Paranoia is no doubt buoyed by the heavy presence of veterans Oldman and Ford in a pair of volatile antagonistic roles.

First Trailer for PARANOIA Starring Liam Hemsworth, Harrison Ford, and Gary Oldman

The first trailer for Robert Luketic’s thriller Paranoia is now available.  It does a nice job at setting up the premise of the film but, as is the current vogue, gives an awful lot of the plot away.  Liam Hemsworth stars as a blue-collar pawn caught in a game of espionage between two kings of industry, played by Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford.  The plot thickens when the long arm of the law reaches out for him, forcing him to play by his own set of rules to survive the game.  This one should be on your radar if only to watch Oldman and Ford battle it out and to see how Hemsworth handles the lead.

Also starring Lucas Till, Amber Heard, Embeth Davidtz, Julian McMahon, Josh Holloway and Domenick LombardozziParanoia opens August 16th.  Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

OUT OF THE FURNACE Set for October 4th; PARANOIA Moves up to August 16th [UPDATED]

by     Posted 1 year, 140 days ago

Relativity Media has done some shuffling on their schedule.  The studio has set October 4th for Out of the Furnace, the new film from Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart).  The film centers on Russell Baze (Christian Bale), who is released after serving four years in prison only to find that his younger brother, Rodney Baze Jr. (Casey Affleck), has been brutally murdered. He sets out to avenge the death and track down the killer.  The film also stars Sam Shepard, Zoe Saldana, Forest Whitaker, and Woody Harrelson.  Looking at the film’s pedigree, I would not be surprised to see the movie show up at TIFF.  Out of the Furnace will share October 4th with the Vince Vaughn comedy The Delivery Man, Alfonso Cuaron‘s sci-fi film Gravity, and Robert RodriguezSin City: A Dame to Kill For.

Paranoia previously held the October 4th date for Relativity, but it will now move to August 16th to play against Kick-Ass 2 and the Aubrey Plaza comedy The To Do ListParanoia stars Liam Hemsworth as Adam Cassidy, an entry-level employee at a corporation run by Nicholas Wyatt (Gary Oldman).  When Wyatt turns Cassidy into a corporate spy against rival Jock Goddard (Harrison Ford), Cassidy is drawn into a dangerous web of intrigue.  Hit the jump for a full list and synopses for Relativity’s upcoming slate, which also includes Luc Besson‘s Malavita, Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s Don Jon, and the animated film Free Birds (click here to see a standee for that film from CinemaCon).

First Look at Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman from PARANOIA

Production is currently underway on director Robert Luketic’s (21) thriller Paranoia, and we’ve got our first semi-look at the characters played by Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman.  I say semi-look because it’s not an official image or a set photo, but instead a picture of Ford and Oldman out to dinner in Philadelphia where the pic is filming.  The noteworthy bit here is that Ford has gone nearly bald for his role as the mentor to an ambitious young technologist played by Liam Hemsworth.  Oldman plays a ruthless CEO who blackmails Hemsworth’s character into infiltrating and spying on his company’s top competitor, which is run by Ford.  The impressive cast is rounded out by the likes of Amber Heard, Josh Holloway, and Richard Dreyfuss.

Filming Begins on PARANOIA Starring Liam Hemsworth, Gary Oldman, and Harrison Ford; Official Synopsis Released

Filming has begun on Robert Luketic‘s thriller Paranoia.  The film stars Liam Hemsworth as a telecom employee who is blackmailed by his boss into spying on a rival company.  I don’t know if Hemsworth can lead a film, but he’s got a strong supporting cast backing him up on Paranoia.  The film also stars Gary Oldman, Harrison Ford, Lucas Till, Amber Heard, Embeth Davidtz, Julian McMahon, Josh Holloway, and Richard Dreyfuss.  While I think Hemsworth has leading man potential, I have far less faith in Luketic, whose previous films include 21, The Ugly Truth, and Killers.  However, the corporate-espionage world of Paranoia is a far cry from anything else Luketic has done, so maybe he’ll have his first good film since his feature debut, 2001′s Legally Blonde.

Hit the jump for the press release, which includes the official synopsis.  Paranoia is due out September 27, 2013.
