Richard Stark’s anti-hero Parker was made for Jason Statham, who has spent the last decade establishing himself as the heir apparent to Charles Bronson. In many ways, Parker should be a slam dunk for him, positing a lean revenge thriller that gives him countless opportunities to drop the pain hammer on deserving miscreants of all stripes. So why, then, does it feel like half measures? Hit the jump for my full review.

After three relatively strong frames, a January chill has hit the box office. Three new titles opened nationwide but only one managed to top $10 million: Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters with an estimated $19 million from 3,372 locations. That was good enough for first place and higher than Friday’s results suggested, but it was not high enough to put a positive spin on the weekend.

 Title Weekend Total
1.  Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters $19,000,000 $19
2.  Mama $12,860,000 $48.6
3.  Silver Linings Playbook $10,000,000 $69.4
4.  Zero Dark Thirty $9,800,000 $69.9
5.  Parker $7,000,000 $7
6.  Django Unchained $5,005,000 $146.2
7.  Movie 43 $5,000,000 $5
8.  Gangster Squad $4,200,000 $39.6
9.  Broken City $4,000,000 $15.2

Nearly a year after it was first scheduled to hit theatres, Paramount’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is poised to take first place at the weekend box office. The R-rated fantasy starring Jeremy Renner earned an estimated $6 million from its 3,372 locations on Friday, suggesting a three-day total of $15 million. That’s $5 million short of studio expectations; but it’s not bad for a film with a 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Fellow-newcomer Movie 43 claimed a 6% RT rank and see what happened? On Friday, the collection of comedy shorts earned $1.8 million from 2,023 locations and is looking at a weekend of just $5 million. FilmDistrict’s Parker, the last of the R-rated newcomers, saw an opening of $2.1 million from 2,224 locations. The action movie could get as high as $6 million by Sunday: an opening that would fall below both Killer Elite and Safe on the list of Jason Statham’s recent disappointments. Check back tomorrow for full results.

Title Friday Total
1. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters $6,025,000 $6
2. Mama $3,800,000 $39.5
3. Silver Linings Playbook $2,337,000 $61.8
4. Zero Dark Thirty $2,325,000 $62.4
5. Parker $2,130,000 $2.1

In Parker, Taylor Hackford’s new action thriller, Michael Chiklis plays Melander, the head of a crew of career criminals with ties to the Chicago Mob, who gives Jason Statham’s character a run for his money.  The intelligent and dynamic actor who won critical acclaim for his work in The Shield is a dangerous, smart and worthy opponent.  He’s joined by newcomer Micah Hauptman as Hardwicke, the fourth member of the gang and the weak link in the chain, who hopes to use his family’s mafia connections to fence their loot.  Opening January 25th, the film also features Jennifer Lopez, Wendell Pierce, Clifton Collins, Jr. and Nick Nolte.

At the recent press day, Chiklis and Hauptman talked about their characters, getting to know each other at the start of the shoot, the attraction of working with veteran director Hackford, their action scenes with Lopez, collaborating with experienced action actors, the trust factor when you play at make believe for a living, the challenges of shooting in hot and humid Louisiana, and the fun and perils of taking in the best of New Orleans.  Chiklis also discussed his new film, Pawn, and a possible Shield movie.  Hauptman revealed his upcoming movie, Destined, with Omar Epps and Mekhi Phifer.  Hit the jump to read more.

A few new posters for some upcoming releases have landed online.  Briefly:

  • Snitch – The first poster for director Ric Roman Waugh’s action-thriller puts Dwayne Johnson’s DEA informant character front and center.  The film opens on February 22nd.
  • The Last Exorcism Part II – I’m not exactly sure how a film with “last” in the title can have a sequel, but the first poster for the horror follow-up has some twisty fun with teasing the number 2.  The film opens on March 1st.
  • Parker – The final poster for the Jason Statham-led actioner highlight’s Statham’s gun-handling abilities and Jennifer Lopez’s, um, behind.  The film opens on January 25th.
  • Monsters University – A playful Spanish poster for Pixar’s upcoming sequel promises “a monstrous summer.”  The film opens in 3D on June 21st. [Update: Disney has asked us to remove the Monsters University poster because it was not cleared for online release.]

First Trailer for Taylor Hackford’s PARKER Starring Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez

by     Posted 1 year, 198 days ago

parker-jason-statham-slice

The first trailer for director Taylor Hackford’s (Ray) crime thriller Parker has been released.  Based on the novel series by Donald E. Westlake, the film stars Jason Statham as a professional thief who lives by a set of rules: don’t steal from people who can’t afford it and don’t hurt people who don’t deserve it.  When his crew double crosses him and leaves him for dead, he sets out to seek revenge during their biggest heist ever.  The pic is a slight departure from Statham’s standard shoot-em-up action fare, but this trailer still has its share of clichés.  Moreover, Statham inexplicably plays a lot of dress-up for his heists, disguising himself as a priest and as a rich Texan (with a terrible accent).  If you’re a fan of Statham and his films, this is probably right up your alley.  If not, Parker looks unlikely to change your mind.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Jennifer Lopez, Michael Chiklis, Wendell Pierce, and Nick Nolte.  Parker opens on January 25th, 2013.
