The animated series TRON: Uprising, premiering on Disney XD on June 7th, takes place after the 1982 feature film and before the events in TRON: Legacy. Produced in CG animation with a 2D aesthetic, the series follows the heroic journey of a new character named Beck (voiced by Elijah Wood), a young program who becomes the unlikely leader of a revolution inside the computer world of The Grid. You can watch the first episode here.

At the press day for this highly anticipated new show, actor Paul Reubens, who voices Pavel, General Tesler’s (voiced by Lance Henriksen) untrustworthy base commander who will do whatever it takes to get ahead, talked about finding the voice for the character, playing a villain, and how he had a toy from the original TRON movie. He also gave an update on the status of the next Pee-Wee Herman movie (produced by Judd Apatow), and his love of reality television, even alluding to the fact that he might be developing his own reality show. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Question: Since he’s not in the pilot much, what can you say about your character, Pavel?

PAUL REUBENS: Honestly, I saw it twice and could not pick out my character in it. I said, “Are you guys sure I’m in it?,” and they went, “Yeah, you’re absolutely in it!” I’m featured way more in every other episode, including the first episode after the pilot. I don’t know what to tell you about it. I ...

While fans of TRON may be holding their breath waiting for a sequel to 2010's TRON: Legacy, Disney XD aims to hold you over with their futuristic animated series, TRON: Uprising. With the debut of the first episode set to air on the network tomorrow (unless you've already watched it here), Disney has released a behind-the-scenes featurette with tons of footage and some great cast commentary from the recent press junket. We were lucky enough to bring you interviews with stars Elijah Wood, who plays Beck, and Mandy Moore, who voices Mara.

TRON: Uprising also stars Emmanuelle Chriqui, Nate Corddry, Lance Henriksen, Reginald VelJohnson, Paul Reubens, Tricia Helfer and, of course, Bruce Boxleitner. The first episode, "Beck's Beginning," will air Friday, May 18 (9:30 - 10:00 p.m., ET/PT) with an uninterrupted encore on Disney XD on Monday, May 21 (7:00 p.m. ET/PT), followed by the series launch on Thursday, June 7 (9:00 p.m.). Hit the jump to see the featurette.

Here’s the official synopsis for TRON: Uprising, followed by the featurette:
Beck is a young mechanic living in Argon City, a growing metropolis in a far off corner of the grid that has just been occupied by General Tesler, a henchman of the notorious Clu. After his best friend Bodhi is ruthlessly derezzed by Clu’s army, Beck seeks justice for his lost friend and launches a crusade against the regime. While many TRON fans are still waiting (possibly in vain) for a sequel to TRON: Legacy, Disney XD is bringing fresh TRON goodness right into the comfort of your own living room. The animated TRON: Uprising series doesn’t debut until June 7th, the first episode has been put online for those that are eager to get a peek at what’s in store. I’m not exactly the biggest TRON fan, but I’ve heard really great things about Uprising. From the bit of this episode that I watched, the animation looks pretty nifty and I’m sure fans of the films will enjoy visiting the TRON world through a weekly series. The story takes place between the events of TRON and TRON: Legacy.

Hit the jump to watch the full episode. The voice cast includes Elijah Wood, Lance Henriksen, Mandy Moore, Nate Corddry, Paul Reubens, and Bruce Boxleitner.

At this weekend’s press day for the upcoming Disney XD animated series TRON: Uprising, debuting with a special preview on the Disney Channel on May 18th, we got to participate in roundtable interviews with the cast, producers and director. Set in the mythology of the TRON universe, the show takes place after the 1982 feature film and before the events in TRON: Legacy. Produced in CG animation with a 2D aesthetic, the series follows the heroic journey of a new character named Beck (voiced by Elijah Wood), a young program who becomes the unlikely leader of a revolution inside the computer world of The Grid.

Question: How is the progress going on the next Pee-Wee Herman film, that you’re doing with Judd Apatow?

Disney's new animated series, TRON: Uprising, released a new trailer in preparation for its launch date this June. Earlier this month, we brought you a new poster and some footage, along with a TV spot and a new image. The new trailer, however, gives us a better sense of the conflict in the world and what the characters' roles are within it. The animation reminds me a bit of the style of Peter Chung (Aeon Flux, Reign: The Conqueror); make of that what you will since it's not exactly for everyone. TRON: Uprising features the voices of Elijah Wood, Mandy Moore, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Lance Henriksen, Paul Reubens, Reginald VelJohnson and Bruce Boxleitner and debuts June 7th. Hit the jump to check out the new trailer. [Update: Disney XD has announced when you can see a special prelude to the series. More after the jump.]

The new trailer for TRON: Uprising follows the official synopsis below (via EW):

Disney has announced there will be a special half-hour prelude episode entitled "TRON: Uprising, Beck's Beginning". Here's the excerpt from the press release:
Disney XD delves inside the computer world of The Grid and the people who live there with "TRON: Uprising," a visually striking new animated television series that follows the heroic journey of a new character, a young program named Beck, who becomes the unlikely leader of a revolution. The series, produced in CG animation with a 2D aesthetic, is set in the era of "TRON" between the stories in the 1982 feature film ...

Seth Green and his crew behind Robot Chicken have already skewered the Star Wars universe several times over with entire specials dedicated to mocking George Lucas and the classic sci-fi saga. Now the stop-motion animated comedy series has their sights set on DC Comics as Cartoon Network's Adult Swim will present a Robot Chicken special featuring Seth Green as Batman, Robin and Aquaman, Paul Reubens as The Riddler, Neil Patrick Harris as Two-Face, Alfred Molina as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as the Green Lantern, Megan Fox as Lois Lane, and Breckin Meyer as Superman. More after the jump!

It likely won't be a singular story, but rather a series of sketches featuring the characters, however that's not entirely clear as co-creator Green tells Deadline, "Having been raised on DC Comics and the Super Friends vs. Legion of Doom, it’s exciting to tell a whole Robot Chicken story within this awesome universe. We’ve been working with (DC Entertainment chief creative officer) Geoff Johns for over 15 years, so playing together on this special only made it more fun to work in the worlds we all love so dearly.” Considering Cartoon Network is under the Time Warner banner and DC Comics has a cozy home with that company, I doubt we'll see a Marvel special to follow, but this should bring some decent laughs. For a refresher, check out a clip from Robot Chicken's take on Star Wars below.

Last week, we showed you a poster and some brief footage from the upcoming animated TV series, TRON: Uprising, and now a new TV spot and image have gone online. The series takes place between 1982's TRON and 2010's TRON: Legacy. In the animated series, the protagonist, a program named Beck (voiced by Elijah Wood), starts an uprising (the title isn't misleading!) in the fight against Clu and his second-in-command, General Tesler (Lance Henriksen). Beck was previously trained to fight by Tron (Bruce Boxleitner), but then Tron disappeared.

TRON: Uprising will have to carry the TRON brand while Disney mulls giving the greenlight to TRON 3, but I don't know how interesting the series can be since Beck's "uprising" clearly didn't do much to stop Clu. Then again, Star Wars: The Clone Wars is ridiculously popular, and everyone knows how that story ends. TRON obviously has a lot more work to do to build up that kind of audience, but at least there's a precedent. Hit the jump to check out the TV spot and image. The show also features the voices of Emmanuelle Chriqui, Mandy Moore, Paul Reubens, Nate Corddry, and Reginald VelJohnson. TRON: Uprising premieres on Disney XD in June.

If you've been wondering what's the status of Tron: Uprising, you'll be happy to learn the show premieres this June on Disney XD. Featuring the voices of Elijah Wood, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Mandy Moore, Paul Reubens, Nate Corddry, Lance Henriksen, and Bruce Boxleitner, Tron: Uprising covers the events between the original TRON and Tron: Legacy. The series is directed and executive produced by Charlie Bean (Samurai Jack) with Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz (the writers of Tron: Legacy) acting as consulting producers.

With the show premiering soon, a poster and some new footage has hit the net and it features our first real look at the series. If you thought Tron: Uprising was going to look like the first trailer, you might be a bit disappointed. But as someone that loves the world of Tron and is still hoping for another sequel, I can't wait to watch the series. Hit the jump for more.

Frank or Francis is officially going to be insane. Writer-director Charlie Kaufman’s (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) musical comedy stars Steve Carell as a director who becomes obsessed with a message board commenter (played by Jack Black) who’s trashing his movies on a Hollywood website. We recently reported that Kate Winslet and Catherine Keener were the latest to join a cast that already includes Nicolas Cage, and Kevin Kline, and now comes word that two more impressive actors are signing on: Elizabeth Banks and Paul Reubens.

THR reports that Banks will play “a highly regarded actress making formulaic comedy bombs” who’s having an affair with Carrell’s character, and Variety reports that Pee-Wee Herman himself will portray a film critic. Kaufman is amassing an incredible cast for his second feature as director (following Synechdoche, New York), and his script is said to be a scathingly brilliant satire of Hollywood. I absolutely cannot wait for this movie. Banks will next be seen in The Hunger Games, while Reubens is developing a new Pee-Wee Herman feature film with Judd Apatow.

After TRON: Legacy landed with a thud, I've found it difficult to care about where the story goes from here. However, Disney still believes in their black-and-neon franchise and they're moving forward with the new animated series TRON: Uprising. The series will air on Disney XD in summer 2012 and cover the events between the original TRON and Legacy. A teaser trailer for the series has gone online and if you loved TRON: Legacy, then you'll probably love this too. It has light cycles and stuff.

More promising is an upcoming remix of TRON: Legacy's outstanding score. Pitchfork reports that Disney will release Tron: Legacy R3CONFIGUR3D on April 5th and it will feature M83, Photek, Moby, Com Truise, and others remixing Daft Punk's score. The remix soundtrack is available to buy in various special editions on the score's official website. Hit the jump to check out the TRON: Uprising trailer and the track list for Tron: Legacy R3CONFIGUR3D.

Judd Apatow will spend a good portion of his near future with familiar characters. He signed on to produce the new Pee-wee Herman movie, the culmination of Paul Reubens' revival tour of the 1980s character. More to my interest, Apatow is writing and directing a new feature based on the characters played by Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd in Knocked Up, scheduled for release June 1, 2012.

The Venice Family Clinic honored Apatow with a humanitarian award last night, where he discussed what makes these characters worth revisiting, and how to address the continuity issues that might arise in each property. Read what he had to say after the jump.

Screen Junkies asked Apatow if the new Pee-wee Herman film touches on what the character has been up to over the last 25 years. Apatow responded:
"No, it exists in its own world but it’s very imaginative. I think that’s one of the best characters of all time for me. It’s like W.C. Fields... It’s more like The Simpsons where in every episode he grew up in a different decade."

I was never the right age for the Pee-wee fandom, but it's been a pleasure to watch the response to this revival as it unfolds. I respect the adoration for the Pee-wee brand of humor, and you get the sense Apatow does as well. Factor in his sharp producerial eye, and there's no better man to have speaking on behalf of the Pee-wee Herman movie from the perspective of a ...

Three decades after his first HBO special, Paul Reubens returns to the network on March 19th, in an exclusive presentation of his current hit Broadway show, The Pee-Wee Herman Show, shot at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre New York this past January. Having opened last November, the 90-minute show is full of subversive humor and childlike wonder, based on both the original stage show and the Emmy-winning Saturday morning TV show, Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, which became a cultural phenomenon. The character was also brought to life on the big screen in Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure and Big Top Pee-Wee.

During a recent interview to promote the HBO special, Paul Reubens talked about the longevity of Pee-Wee Herman, the possibility of bringing Pee-Wee back to the big screen (with Judd Apatow as producer), what he’s learned in the 30 years since his first show, and why he thinks there’s so much interest in the character again. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Question: When you began as Pee-wee Herman, what sort of longevity did you think this character would have? Did you think you would still be Pee-Wee Herman, 31 years later?

PAUL REUBENS: I had no idea. If anyone would have told me I’d be doing this 30 years later, I would have laughed. But now, I plan on doing it 30 years from now, when I’m 140.

How has the show changed from its stint in Los Angeles?

REUBENS: I changed quite a bit of material. We rewrote a lot of stuff, over ...

There is a broad and devoted fanbase for Pee-Wee Herman who must have been delighted to hear the character would return to his stage roots for The Pee-Wee Herman Show. But not every fan lives in New York and Los Angeles, the only two cities where the show played. Luckily, The Pee-Wee Herman Show on Broadway will reach the masses by way of an HBO special that premieres March 19. Watch the teaser trailer, in which Paul Reubens rummages through a box of bow ties, after the break.

The stage show rekindled the Pee-Wee franchise. Judd Apatow is producing a new Pee-Wee movie, said to be "a linear road movie." Click here for more details.

File this one in the rumor pile for now, but Tim Burton might be developing a sequel to his 1993 classic The Nightmare Before Christmas. In a recent interview [via Dread Central], Paul "Pee-wee Herman" Reubens said he would like to reteam with Burton in the future (the two teamed up for Pee-Wee's Big Adventure), but that the director has a slew of potential projects already lined up. Reubens then proceeded to rattle off a list of various films Burton was developing and one of them was reportedly a sequel to The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Burton's garnered a lot of clout ever since Alice in Wonderland broke a billion dollars at the worldwide box office. However, his next project is an adaptation of the 1960s gothic soap opera series Dark Shadows starring (who else) Johnny Depp. Filming on Dark Shadows is set to begin in April. It's possible that Burton could still be developing a Nightmare sequel on the side, and just like the original, will hire someone else to direct. [Update: Derek Frey, a producer and executive at Tim Burton Productions, tells The Playlist that there is no truth to the rumor.]

In case you weren't aware, Paul Reubens has been enjoying somewhat of a comeback as of late with an exclusive Broadway engagement of The Pee-Wee Herman Show. Now it looks like those of us who couldn't make it to New York City or just couldn't afford to buy tickets will get a chance to see the show anyway. Today HBO announced they will shoot the special immediately following the show's conclusion on Broadway on January 2nd with the intention to air it sometime in 2011. If you don't recall, before Pee-Wee Herman hit the big-time on children's television, HBO helped launch the character on their Young Comedians series and with a 1981 comedy special. Acting as an extended episode of Pee-Wee's Playhouse, the new show reunites the titular character with all his friends including Miss Yvonne, Cowboy Curtis, Pterri the Pterodactyl, Jambi the Genie, and Chairry. I can't wait to finally see this show! How about you?

With Disney's long awaited sequel Tron Legacy hitting theaters in a little over a month, fans are foaming at the mouth for everything Tron related. Even after the movie gets released, audiences will have something new to look forward to on the grid as Variety reports Disney XD has ordered Tron: Uprising an animated series being developed for release in the summer of 2012. Charlie Bean (Samurai Jack) will executive produce and direct the series, so you know the action will be amazing, and Tron Legacy writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz will serve as consulting producers. For more on the new series including the interesting list of cast members, hit the jump

Heading into the world of Tron and lending their voices to the animated series will be Elijah Wood (Everything is Illuminated), Emmanuelle Chriqui (Entourage), Mandy Moore (Tangled), Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee's Playhouse), Lance Henriksen (Cyrus) and Bruce Boxleitner reprising his franchise role as Tron. When we first heard about this series back in September, it was said that this Tron: Uprising would be a ten part microseries in which a young program named Beck stands up against an evil regime headed by Clu who obtains his status after the defeat of Tron, the security watchdog program. However, that information is not true and Tron: Uprising is completely independent of that microseries which is slated to air in the fall of 2011. Sounds like a lot more Tron is headed our way even ...

Yesterday, we reported the exciting news that Paul Reubens would be teaming up with Judd Apatow for a new Pee-Wee movie. Today, Reubens (who created and plays the manic Pee-Wee Herman) spoke more about the project that he's co-writing with actor Paul Rust (I Love You, Beth Cooper) and that Apatow is producing. Speaking to The New York Times, Reubens said that he had scripts that would follow his wonderful children's show Pee-Wee's Playhouse, the classic Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and the not-so-classic Big-Top Pee-Wee. However, Apatow said "He was more interested in something closer, in the same vein and the same genre, as Big Adventure."

Hit the jump for more on what Reubens had to say about his new project. I also provide my thoughts on what I hope the new film will be.

According to Reubens, Apatow wants "a reality-based world and a linear road movie."* However, the comedian also clarified,
"It’s at such an early stage right now that there still exists the possibility that this could turn into the ‘Playhouse’ movie. I don’t think we know the answer to that yet."
The "'Playhouse' movie" Reubens mentions is one we first reported on last December. The plan was to have Reubens' current stage show, Pee-Wee Herman Show, re-ignite interest in a new movie. Said Reubens:
“It’s not really the real world, it’s Puppetland. On ‘Pee Wee’s Playhouse,’ on the television series we never left the playhouse, we were always inside the playhouse. The movie is all out of the playhouse,” ...
