NAKED LUNCH Criterion Blu-ray Review

by     Posted 1 year, 189 days ago

To quote Nelson Muntz, “I can think of two things wrong with that title.”

The notion of an unfilmable novel is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. You can film anything. You might film it badly, but you can film it. David Cronenberg proved that in 1991 when he adapted William S. Burrough’s novel Naked Lunch for the big screen. Good or bad doesn’t quite enter into it – to dive into Burroughs is to experience madness in its purest form – but if anything could defy adaptation, that book would be it. And if any director could find a way to crack its code, it would be Cronenberg.  Hit the jump for my review of Naked Lunch on Blu-ray.

Final Trailer for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS and Poster Featuring Chris Pine as Captain Kirk

by     Posted 1 year, 250 days ago

Since the film is only a month away, Paramount has released what will presumably be the final major trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness.  If you want your Trek movie epic and deadly serious, then it looks like J.J. Abrams has you covered.  I’m glad this new trailer finally turns the attention to Kirk (Chris Pine) rather than Cumberbatch’s villain.  The trailer also hits home that the Enterprise is going to get destroyed, and when you factor in the destruction it already suffered in Search for Spock and again in Generations, the impact for Into Darkness feels somewhat diminished.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer along with the character poster for Kirk, and click on the respective links for the posters for Spock, Uhura, and “John Harrison”.  The film also stars Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Alice Eve, and Peter WellerStar Trek Into Darkness opens in IMAX 3D on May 15th, and in 2D and 3D on May 17th.

New Teaser Trailer for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Shows Plenty of Action with a Hint of Humor

by     Posted 1 year, 288 days ago

A new teaser trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness has gone online and showcases about as much action and wit as you can cram into a runtime of just over a minute. While the first trailer and first teaser seemed to rely on setting up Kirk and John Harrison’s feud, this latest entry is for the most part Kirk/Enterprise-centric. The entire cut is entertaining but the highlight for me has to be Kirk acknowledging his own status as a “pain” to his superiors.

Check out the trailer after the jump. Starring Chris Pine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve, Zoe Saldana, Peter Weller, John Cho, and Noel Clarke, Star Trek Into Darkness opens in 3D and IMAX on May 17th.

New Teaser Trailer for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS [Updated with Viral Launch]

by     Posted 2 years, 4 days ago

A new trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness has gone online.  Unlike the previous teaser, this one is far more melancholy as we hear Pike (Bruce Greenwood) tells Kirk, “There’s greatness in you, but not an ounce of humility.  But there’s going to come a moment when you’re wrong about that.  And you’re going to get yourself, and everyone under your command, killed.”  From there, we see the epic action director J.J. Abrams is going to unleash.  Details on the story are still scarce, but a teaser trailers never give those away.  They’re meant to entice, and this new trailer is even better than the first one.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve, Peter Weller, and Noel ClarkeStar Trek Into Darkness opens in 3D on May 17, 2013. [Update: Hidden in the trailer is the key to launch the film's viral campaign. More after the jump.]

Japanese STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Trailer with 15 Seconds of Added Footage

by     Posted 2 years, 15 days ago

You’ve seen the announcement trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness and you want more.  You’re clicking to see if there’s any way you can still get tickets to IMAX screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey because they’ll show the first 9 minutes of the movie.  You’re building a time machine to jump forward to December 17th when another trailer will launch.  For now, you can enjoy 15 more seconds of footage from the upcoming flick.  No, it doesn’t tell you the name of the villain, because that would ruin the entire picture (apparently).  But it does have a bit of a callback to the most popular Star Trek film ever made.

Hit the jump to check out the Japanese trailer, which contains 15 more seconds of footage.  The film stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve, Peter Weller, Noel Clarke, and Benedict Cumberbatch.  Star Trek Into Darkness opens in 3D and IMAX on May 17th, 2013.

First Trailer for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Plus 25 Images from the Trailer

by     Posted 2 years, 16 days ago

The first trailer for director J.J. Abrams’ sequel Star Trek Into Darkness has been released.  Benedict Cumberbatch takes control from the get-go with a narration over a sequence of increasingly dramatic scenes. The rest of the crew get a few seconds of face-time apiece, but action, destruction and Cumberbatch rule over this trailer. While there are no glimpses of space shown, there appears to be at least three separate terrains to keep our heroes busy. And it looks as if someone has lost control of the Starship Enterprise…

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve, Peter Weller and Noel Clarke.  Star Trek Into Darkness opens in 3D and IMAX on May 17th, 2013.

Could this be the “one man weapon” the synopsis foretells?

Hit the jump to see the poster.  Directed by J.J. Abrams, the film stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve, Peter Weller, Noel Clarke, and Benedict Cumberbatch.  Star Trek Into Darkness opens in 3D and IMAX 3D on May 17, 2013.

New York Comic-Con: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, PART 2 Panel Recap; Surprise Voice Cameo, New Clips, What Animated DC Movies Are Set for 2013, and More

by     Posted 2 years, 69 days ago

Frank Miller‘s The Dark Knight Returns isn’t just a must-read for Batman fans or comic-book fans.  It’s a must-read for everyone who wants to understand the current state of superhero books and movies.  While its influence has been far-reaching, it wasn’t directly adapted until Warner Premiere took the title and turned it into a two-part animated feature.  The first part was released earlier this year, and now The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 is due out in 2013.  New York Comic-Con 2012 hosted a panel for the film, and Warner Home Video’s Gary Miereanu, voice casting director Andrea Romano, and executive producer Bruce Timm were on hand to show off some clips, talk about the voice cast, what will and won’t get your animated film an R-rating, a surprising cameo, and much more including other films Warner Home Video has on tap for 2013.

Trailer for THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, PART 2 Featuring the Voices of Peter Weller and Michael Emerson

by     Posted 2 years, 72 days ago

Warner Premiere has released the trailer for the upcoming animated film, The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2.  Based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller, the story continues with Superman (Mark Valley) being tasked to take down an elderly but still resourceful Batman.  This trailer shows off their fight along with Michael Emerson‘s take on the Joker.  Of course, no one beats Mark Hamill, but this Emerson isn’t bad.  He’s certainly far better than John DiMaggio‘s take on The Joker from Batman: Under the Red Hood.  Our own Gil Kellerman liked The Dark Knight Rises, Part 1, so Part 2 should be a solid finish to the adaptation.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 hits Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital Download in 2013.

The Blu-ray release date for director Jay Oliva’s animated feature Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – Part 1 is rapidly approaching.  We have a new clip from the movie to tide you over until then.  If you missed it, here’s the trailer and first clip from Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – Part 1, which features Frank Miller’s take on the aging Caped Crusader who returns after a ten-year hiatus to take down a ruthless street gang, the Mutants.  In this new clip, the leader of the Mutants (voiced by Gary Anthony Williams) has a few words to say about Batman and Commissioner Gordon.  Hit the jump to check it out and be sure to pick up a copy of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – Part 1 when it’s available starting September 25th.

The first trailer for the animated adaptation of Frank Miller’s highly regarded graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns has gone online.  For those unfamiliar, the story takes place a decade after Bruce Wayne gave up being Batman and entered retirement.  The return of Harvey “Two-Face” Dent and a gang of criminals known as The Mutants force Wayne to don the suit once again, and he’s joined by a young girl taking on the persona of Robin in his quest.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 features Peter Weller as the voice of Batman, joined by David Selby as Comissioner Gordon, Ariel Winter as Robin, Wade Williams as Two-Face, and Michael McKean as Dr. Bartholomew Wolper.  Judging by the trailer, it looks like director Jay Oliva has brought the goods, and fans of Miller’s story should be quite pleased.  Hit the jump to watch for yourself.  Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 will be released on Blu-ray on September 25th.

Voice Cast Announced for Two-Part Animated Adaptation of THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS

by     Posted 2 years, 212 days ago

Last year, Warner Premiere released an animated adaptation of Frank Miller‘s popular graphic novel, Batman: Year One.  However, the popularity of that book pales in comparison to one of the most influential comics of all-time, The Dark Knight Returns.  Along with Watchmen, Returns was a major deconstruction of the superhero genre, and pushed it into a more violent and gritty direction.  Miller’s take on the Batman universe showed Dark Knight as more of a fascist than a hero (you can skip Miller’s atrocious sequel series, The Dark Knight Strikes Again).  Although Christopher Nolan has eschewed a comic-book tone with his Batman movies, he has retained the themes of Miller’s 1986 comic.

Today, THR reports that WP is moving forward with an animated adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns, and that they will split the feature into two-parts.  Hit the jump for more including the film’s voice cast.

Recap of the ROBOCOP Hero Complex Screening With Peter Weller

by     Posted 2 years, 215 days ago

This weekend Hero Complex in association with The Los Angeles Times hosted the third annual Hero Complex Film Festival.  Highlights to which included a screening of Shaun of the Dead with Edgar Wright, Wall-E with director Andrew Stanton and A Clockwork Orange with star Malcolm McDowell.

I was on hand Saturday for the fest at a midday screening of Paul Verhoeven’s seminal satirical ultraviolent masterpiece RoboCop. Star Peter Weller appeared after the screening for a lengthy and animated Q&A wherein he discussed prepping for RoboCop, learning to appreciate the satirical bend of the film and his thoughts on a hypothetical remake, among many other topics of conversation.  For highlights from the Q&A, hit the jump.

STAR TREK 2 Stars Zachary Quinto and Simon Pegg Tweet Picture Wrap

by     Posted 2 years, 227 days ago

If we can trust the Tweet, then Star Trek 2 and Zachary Quinto have officially wrapped.  Quinto sent out an image and a brief message over Twitter today that would suggest the follow up to J.J. Abrams‘ 2009 Star Trek has wrapped.  After these set photos and video initially leaked earlier this year, we haven’t see a whole lot out of the Starfleet camp (here’s a hat).  Quinto stays the course with this Tweet, as far as images go, but it’s good to know the production has wrapped up.  Maybe now we can get an official title.  The Untitled Star Trek Sequel, starring Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, John Cho, Alice Eve, Peter Weller, Noel Clarke, and Benedict Cumberbatch. , opens May 17th, 2013.  Hit the jump to see the image along with a recap of what we know about the sequel.

STAR TREK 2 Rumor: Benedict Cumberbatch’s Villainous Role Revealed?

by     Posted 2 years, 235 days ago

The nature of the villain role played by Benedict Cumberbatch in the Star Trek sequel may have just been revealed.  In the interests of keeping the front page spoiler-free, I’ll keep this brief and vague with all the important information after the jump.  There are some additional spoiler-y bits that include cameos and alien races that could be featured in the sequel.  And, as always, nothing is confirmed, so file these rumors under “extremely likely.”  The film stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, John Cho, Alice Eve, Peter Weller and Noel Clarke. Star Trek 2 opens May 17, 2013.  Hit the jump to get spoiled.
