Elizabeth Banks to Direct PITCH PERFECT 2; Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson Likely to Return

by     Posted 87 days ago

The Pitch Perfect sequel is forging ahead, albeit with a different director at its helm.  Elizabeth Banks, who conceived of the idea for the first film in addition to producing and co-starring in it, will make her feature directorial debut with Pitch Perfect 2, replacing the first film’s director Jason MooreTHR reports that Banks will also return in an acting capacity for the Universal Pictures follow-up in addition to producing the pic, with Pitch Perfect stars Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson likely to return.  Plot details for Pitch Perfect 2 are unknown at this time, but Kay Cannon will also be returning to write the script.

This is a big get for Banks and also excellent news in a world where too few films are directed by women.  The very funny actress/producer has previously directed a few shorts, but Pitch Perfect 2 will be her first time taking the helm of a major feature film.  The first pic was one of the most pleasant surprises of 2012, so here’s hoping the humor and chemistry holds over for the sequel.  Bringing Kendrick and Wilson back onboard is an excellent—and crucial—start.  Watch the trailer for the first film after the jump.

Opening this weekend is writer-director David Twohy’s Riddick.  The R-rated film finds Vin Diesel’s character being hunted by mercenaries, and once again, they’re hopelessly outmatched by the anti-hero who can see in the dark.  But the mercs and their bounty are forced to team up when lethal alien monsters attack.  If you’re a fan of Pitch Black, you’re going to be very happy watching Riddick.  The film also stars Matt NableKatee SackhoffJordi MollaDave BautistaRaoul TrujilloBokeem Woodbine and Nolan Gerard Funk.

At the recent press day in Los Angeles I landed an exclusive interview with Katee Sackhoff.  She talked about making the film, what surprised her about the filming process,  how she was cut out of Pitch Perfect (but still gets residuals), the best part of attending conventions, Twitter, what she collects, Oculus, and much more.

Universal Planning PITCH PERFECT Sequel for Release in 2015

While Rebel Wilson’s hosting gig at the MTV Movie Awards this past Sunday may not have been a hit with everyone, her performance with fellow Pitch Perfect cast members must have struck a chord.  Universal announced today during its presentation at CinemaCon that sequel to the 2012 sleeper hit is now in development for a planned 2015 release, and original writer Kay Cannon (30 Rock) is back on board as well.  Pitch Perfect focused on the world of collegiate a capella groups, detailing the struggles of an all-female group, the Barden Bellas, who desperately want to redeem themselves at the national championships.

The cast featured Wilson, Anna Kendrick, Anna Camp, Skylar Astin, Brittany Snow, Ester Dean, Alexis Knapp, Hanna Mae Lee, and Ben Platt.  No word on if the entire cast, director Jason Moore, or producer and cast member Elizabeth Banks are returning, but as development progresses, we can expect those announcements to be released.  Hit the jump for more.

PITCH PERFECT Blu-ray Review

anna-kendrick-pitch-perfect-slice

Though formulaic to a fault, Pitch Perfect is the sort of film where you know pretty much everything that’s going to happen, but you enjoy the ride anyway.  Anna Kendrick leads a charming ensemble of girls who are in an a cappella singing group that competes in nationals.  Is it Bring it On meets Glee? Yes, but… it works.  Our review of Pitch Perfect on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Adam’s Top 10 Films of 2012

adams-top-10-2012-slice

It became clear around September that putting together a Top 10 list this year was going to be incredibly difficult.  We’ve been provided with an embarrassment of riches throughout the year, and so the prospect of whittling it down to a list of my ten favorites proved daunting.  2012 seems destined to go down in history as “one of those years” like 1999, 1994, or 1977, where a large number of the year’s offerings will stand the test of time.  Though this list expresses what films I connected with most out of the past 12 months, there are at least 10 or 15 other movies that I also really enjoyed waiting just outside the wings.  If forced to pick my ten favorites from 2012, though, this is what I’ve come up with.  Hit the jump to take a look.

Now playing in theaters is director Jason Moore’s great musical comedy Pitch Perfect.  Written by Kay Cannon (New Girl, 30 Rock), the film tells the story of Beca (Anna Kendrick), a goth-like rebellious teen that dreams of being a music producer, but instead finds herself in an all-female a cappella singing group at Barden University.  Led by great performances from the entire cast and fun takes on classic and new songs, Pitch Perfect is definitely worth your time this weekend.  The film also stars Rebel Wilson, Skylar Astin, Adam Devine, Anna Camp, Brittany Snow, John Michael Higgins and Elizabeth Banks.  For more on the film, here are seven clips and all our previous coverage.

At the recent Los Angeles press day I got to sit down with Anna Kendrick for an exclusive interview.  We talked about how she got involved, her reaction to the finished film, the great script, if she was nervous to sing and dance on camera, what it was like to sing live on set, how much changed during production, the rehearsals, The Breakfast Club, what it was like to film in Baton Rouge, End of Watch, TIFF, Twitter (follow Kendrick here), her love of Reddit, and a lot more.  Hit the jump for what she had to say.

With both new takes on old favorites and hits of right now, The Bellas fight to climb their way to the top of the cutthroat world of college music competitions. The film also stars Rebel Wilson, Skylar Astin, Adam Devine, Anna Camp, Brittany Snow, John Michael Higgins and Elizabeth Banks.

At the film’s press junket, actress/producer Elizabeth Banks spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about how much fun she had playing one of the a cappella competition commentators, how much improvisation she did with co-star John Michael Higgins, just how many outtakes they have, what made her see a movie in the book the film is based on, what she’s most proud of with the finished product, and the guidelines she and her husband use, when it comes to finding projects for their company, Brownstone Productions. She also talked about getting ready to return to the role of Effie Trinket for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the possibility of taking on the role of Tinkerbell for the feature film Tink, and recording a voice for the animated feature Lego: The Piece of Resistance. Friday Box Office – Strong Starts for Both HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA and LOOPER

It’s a good weekend to be Sony Pictures. The studio claimed the two top spots on Friday with Hotel Transylvania and Looper, and saw both new releases perform well above expectations. In first place, Hotel Transylvania earned an estimated $11 million from 3,349 runs. The animated film will easily win the weekend with almost $40 million: a record for a Sony Animation release and at least $10 million more than initially projected. Looper is also off to a strong start. Released under Sony’s TriStar label, the sci-fi feature took in an estimated $6.9 million on Friday from 2,992 locations. With strong word of mouth behind it, Looper could realize over $20 million through Sunday: well above the openings of recent R-rated releases. The weekend’s third wide opening, the Fox drama Won’t Back Down, fell below the top five with an estimated $921,000 from 2,515 locations. That was about the number Universal might have expected from its early release of Pitch Perfect. Debuting in just 335 locations ahead of its nationwide opening next week, the comedy took in an estimated $1.75 million on Friday. We’ll have full details and analysis tomorrow.

 Title Friday Total
1. Hotel Transylvania $11,000,000 $11
2. Looper $6,900,000 $6.9
3. End of Watch $2,400,000 $20.5
4. House at the End of the Street $2,330,000 $17.4
5. Trouble with the Curve $2,300,000 $18.5

Rebel Wilson Talks PITCH PERFECT, Her Career Post-BRIDESMAIDS, and Her ABC TV Show SUPER FUN NIGHT

The film also stars Rebel Wilson, Skylar Astin, Adam Devine, Anna Camp, Brittany Snow, John Michael Higgins and Elizabeth Banks.

At the film’s press junket, the incredibly funny Aussie actress Rebel Wilson, who plays the super-confident Fat Amy, talked about how getting the role in Bridesmaids (her first American job) changed things for her, how she sang the Lady Gaga song “Edge of Glory” for her Pitch Perfect audition, that she got to do a lot of improvising on set, just how outrageous things got between her and co-star Adam Devine (who plays the self-obsessed lead singer of rival group The Treblemakers), and her favorite song to sing in the film. She also talked about how she went from being a junior handler at dog shows in Australia to an actress, some crazy experiences she had in the theater (one of which included her actually falling off of the roof, in Fiddler on the Roof), how she’s just starting to be able to enjoy all of her current success, and that she’s developing a TV show for ABC, called Super Fun Night.
