Black Friday is almost here, and like most people who love a good deal, you’ve mapped out your plan of attack (make sure this attack doesn’t involve trampling). You know what you want, where to get it, and Thanksgiving dinner be damned, you’re going to camp out in front of a store or in front of your computer. While we admire your enthusiasm, we have some suggestions for items you might want to add to your wish list. And they don’t necessarily have to be for you; they could also be for someone you know.
Adam, Dave, and I have nine items we’d like to recommend: three small items (“Stocking Stuffers”), three moderately priced items (“Under the Tree”), and three expensive items (“Extra Nice”). More importantly, we each have a charity to recommend since we truly believe it’s better to give than to receive (unless you’re receiving a trip to outer space; nothing beats a trip to outer space). It’s the first day of the New Year (and I hope you have a good one!), but it might be time to start getting your Christmas list ready. ThreeA is planning to release Portal 2 action figures for Atlas and P-Body this upcoming holiday season. As you can see, there’s a great level of detail. They even come with their own little portal guns! So cute!

Geeks assemble! Comic-Con 2012 has officially begun, and we have very good news for fans of the Portal videogames. Pre-orders are now available for Chell’s Jumpsuit, Long-Fall Boot Socks, Atlas’ Portal Device, and a nifty display stand. Yes, you can now sport a jumpsuit based on the one worn by Chell in Portal and Portal 2, fully equipped with an adjustable elastic waistband and a super official Aperture Science logo. Moreover, you can own a replica of the damn Portal device. The 1:1 scale replica measures 30” in length and includes sound effects and blue and violet colored LEDs.

In a cool bit of cross-over marketing, Portal 2, one of the most-anticipated games of the year, included an interactive trailer for J.J. Abrams’ Super 8, one of the most-anticipated films of the year. Rather than just stick a video of the trailer on to the game’s list of extras, Valve (the company behind Portal 2) actually puts the player in the POV of someone on the train during the crash that was seen in the teaser trailer. It’s a nice approach and while nothing major is revealed, I appreciate the originality of the effort.

Last night was the Video Game Awards and with the ceremony came the debut of trailers for some of the hottest upcoming video games. Among the new trailers, I was most excited to see a new sneak peek at Batman: Arkham City, the sequel to the incredible Batman: Arkham Asylum. The trailer didn’t really show any new gameplay, but it did introduce us to one of the game’s main villains, Dr. Hugo Strange (who might also be a villain in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises). There were also cool trailers for Mass Effect 3, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, Resistance 3, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Portal 2, Prototype 2, SSX: Deadly Decents, Forza Motorsport 4, Mortal Kombat, and Thor: God of Thunder. There was also a teaser trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming horror game, Insane, which unfortunately isn’t due out until 2013.
