New UNBROKEN Trailer Continues to Prove Jack O’Connell Is One to Watch [Updated with New Images and Posters]

unbroken-jack-oconnell-slice

Who’s ready for a Jack O’Connell tour de force?  The guy’s already proven himself thanks to his work in Starred Up and the upcoming limited release ’71, but based on this new trailer for Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken, it looks as though he’s got a lot more to offer.  The narrative is remarkable in and of itself, but O’Connell appears to bring such heart to the role of Louis Zamperini that his performance is bound to up the intensity of the situation tenfold.  Will it be enough to earn him some Oscar buzz?  There’s already some significant competition in the Best Actor category so it might be a reach, but Adam thinks the film’s got a chance at snagging a spot in the Best Picture race, and based on the quality of this new promo, I’m inclined to agree.

Hit the jump to check out the latest Unbroken trailer.  The film arrives on December 25th and also stars Domhnall GleesonGarrett Hedlund, Jai Courtney, Finn Wittrock, Alex Russell, John Magaro and Luke Treadaway. [Update: Universal has also released new images and posters for the film.]

New THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES Character Posters Featuring Legolas, Thorin, Tauriel, Bard, and Thranduil

Warner Bros. has been releasing a new Hobbit poster every day for some time now, so we figured now was a good time to round up the latest The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies character posters in one convenient location.  The concluding installment in Peter Jackson’s trilogy will no doubt feature a battle of epic proportions as the title suggests, and indeed Thorin (Richard Armitage) and Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans) look pretty roughed up in their posters.  The elves, curiously, don’t have a scratch on them.  Then again, when you’re as pretty as Orlando Bloom, Lee Pace, and Evangeline Lilly, it’s hard not to look good no matter the circumstances.

Take a look at the latest The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies character posters after the jump.  The film also stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, and Benedict CumberbatchThe Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies opens in 2D, 3D, HFR 3D, and IMAX 3D on December 17th.

New BIRDMAN Clips and Posters Shine a Light On Michael Keaton’s Battle Against Edward Norton

I’m so exceed to see Birdman, a dark comedy starring Michael Keaton that director Alejandro González Iñárritu staged to appear as one long, continuous shot.  The film stars Keaton as an actor who once played an iconic superhero, and now faces troubles with his ego and family as he prepares to mount a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim past glory.  Two new clips from the film hit today, and both of them feature Keaton going toe-to-toe with Edward Norton as a smarmy New York theater actor.  And they’re great.  We’ve also got a look at a few city specific posters for the movie.

Hit the jump to check out the new Birdman clips and posters.  The film also stars Naomi WattsEmma StoneZach GalifianakisAndrea Riseborough, and Amy Ryan.  Birdman (or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) opens in select theaters on October 17th. Just a heads up that the language in these scenes is NSFW.

See the 22 JUMP STREET Sequel Posters from the End Credits

22-jump-street-sequel-posters

This summer’s 22 Jump Street was not only one of the best and funniest comedy sequels to come our way in years, but also one of the most self-aware.  Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller infused the entire film with nods and meta references to the nature of sequels to hilarious results, culminating in one of the best end credits sequences of all time.  As if anticipating the audience’s question over whether there would ever be another Jump Street sequel, Lord and Miller crafted short clips and posters for over 20 follow-ups with increasingly ridiculous premises.  With the film being released on iTunes on October 28th and on Blu-ray and DVD on November 18th, the posters for all of the “sequels” have now landed online, and I have to wonder if one of these will actually be culled for the real 23 Jump Street currently in development.  It’s tough to pick out a favorite, but I think the tagline I admire the most is from 37 Jump Street: Scuba Class.

Benedict Cumberbatch Is an Enigma in First THE IMITATION GAME Posters; Plus New Posters for BIRDMAN, NIGHTCRAWLER, and JOHN WICK

New posters for some of this fall’s most highly anticipated titles have landed online.  Briefly:

  • The Imitation Game – The very first The Imitation Game posters feature some wordplay involving the Nazi Enigma Code and the man who cracked it, a genius mathematician named Alan Turing, played by Benedict Cumberbatch in the film.  Both Cumberbatch and the movie itself will no doubt find themselves in the heat of the Oscar race.  The film opens on November 21st.  Click here for Matt’s review from TIFF.
  • Birdman – Another potential awards contender is Alejandro González Iñárritu’s black comedy, which gets a new theatrical poster ahead of its NYFF screening and release.  The film opens on October 17th.
  • Nightcrawler – Also a highlight from TIFF was Dan Gilroy’s dark, twisted psychological thriller featuring a truly unhinged performance by Jake Gyllenhaal.  This new poster isn’t near as pretty as the previous one, but the film remains one of my favorites of the year thus far.  Click here for Matt’s review from TIFF.
  • John Wick – We also have a new poster for this upcoming Keanu Reeves actioner that seemingly came out of nowhere and has been building buzz over the past few weeks, culminating in a pretty fantastic trailer.  The film opens on October 24th.

SERENA Trailer and Posters: Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper Reunite in Long-Delayed Drama

by     Posted 42 days ago

At long last, the very first Serena trailer and poster for director Susanne Bier’s period drama.  The film stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper as a 1920s newlywed couple who travel to North Carolina to seize control of the timber industry.  Infidelity and infertility leads Serena (Lawrence) to become suspicious of George’s (Cooper) illegitimate son while attempting to keep their timber land from being taken by the government.  Remember all the buzz surrounding Lawrence and Cooper in 2012’s Silver Linings Playbook?  Well Serena was actually shot 10 months before the David O. Russell film came out, so you can say this one has been sitting on the shelf for a spell.  This trailer doesn’t make the movie look especially bad—it looks fine—but alas, as the picture is slated to open overseas next month, a U.S. release date remains elusive.

Hit the jump to check out the first Serena trailer and poster.  The film also stars Toby Jones, Rhys Ifans, Sam Reid, and Sean Harris and opens in the UK on October 24th.

We’ve got a couple new posters to share.  Here’s what’s coming at a glance:

  • The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 – We’ve seen two different sets of character posters for the third installment of the Hunger Games franchise (here and here), but neither included one for our heroine, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence).  However, Lionsgate finally released one for The Girl on Fire.  You can’t see her face in it, but it’s still something.
  • Shelter – We’ve also got a new poster for Paul Bettany’s directorial debut, Shelter.  This one stars Jennifer Connelly and Anthony Mackie as two homeless people living on the streets of New York.  It’s due to screen at TIFF on Friday, September 12th.

THE MAZE RUNNER Clip and Character Posters; Plus Additional Promos Featuring The Grievers

by     Posted 50 days ago

the-maze-runner-clip-griever-slice

If you’re going to survive The Maze Runner, you’ve got to follow the rules.  You’ve got to check out the map room, get your section assignment, gear up and only then can you run into the maze to try to find a way out.  And if that’s not hard enough, you’ve also got to make sure you make it back into The Glade before those doors close, otherwise, the Grievers will get you.

It’s always been clear that the James Dashner book has some serious big screen potential, but now that The Maze Runner promo material is pouring in ahead of the film’s September 19th release, it’s more evident than ever.  Hit the jump to catch a brand new The Maze Runner clip as well as some new promo videos and character posters, too.

Robert Downey Jr. Defends His Honor in THE JUDGE Poster; Plus New Posters for FOXCATCHER and PADDINGTON

by     Posted 58 days ago

the-judge-poster-paddington-poster

Posters for a trio of fall releases have landed online.  Briefly:

  • The Judge – The first The Judge poster puts Robert Downey Jr. in a precarious position, as he’s forced to defend his father (Robert Duvall)—a judge—in the court of law.  The film marks director David Dobkin’s first foray into drama and I’m curious to see how it comes together when I catch its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next week.  The tagline is…interesting.  The pic opens in theaters on October 10th.
  • Foxcatcher – The previous poster for Bennett Miller’s highly anticipated drama focused on Channing Tatum’s Olympic wrestler character, but this new poster is all about the transformed Steve Carell as eccentric millionaire John du Pont.  This is another film that will be screening at TIFF before its theatrical bow on November 14th.
  • Paddington – A new poster for the live-action/CG animation hybrid family adventure puts the adorable titular bear front and center while also highlighting the film’s holiday release date.  Starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Bonneville with the voice of Ben Whishaw as Paddington, the pic opens in theaters on Christmas Day.

The Rebels Take Flight in New THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 1 Posters

For some reason I keep forgetting that there’s a new Hunger Games movie coming this year.  Catching Fire surprised the hell out of me and was my favorite studio tentpole of last year, so I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how Francis Lawrence tackles the final book in the Hunger Games trilogy (well the first half of the final book, technically).  A peek into what’s in store has surfaced today by way of a new collection of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 posters that introduce the leaders of the rebellion.  There’s Liam Hemsworth’s Gale, of course, but I’m really excited to see Game of Thrones actress Natalie Dormer’s portrayal of Cressida; Dormer’s look for the character is positively fantastic.  And yes, that’s Elden Henson aka Fulton from The Mighty Ducks as Pollux.

Hit the jump to take a look at the Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 posters, which also feature Evan Ross as Messalla, Mahershala Ali as Boggs, and Wes Chatham as Castor.  The film also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Jena Malone, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, and Donald SutherlandThe Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 opens in theaters on November 21st.

New Posters for WHIPLASH, BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP, and LAGGIES

whiplash-poster-laggies-poster

Posters for a trio of non-superhero, non-franchise movies have landed online, and we thought it prudent to share.  Briefly:

  • Whiplash – Our own Matt Goldberg is quoted on the Whiplash poster for this dark drama, which stars Miles Teller as an aspiring jazz drummer who studies under a ruthless instructor (J.K. Simmons).  I’m actually quoted on the trailer myself, as the film was one of the breakout hits of this year’s Sundance Film Festival.  The pic opens in theaters on October 10th.  Read Matt’s review here.
  • Before I Go to Sleep – A poster and release date have been unveiled for this thriller starring Nicole Kidman as a woman with no memory.  Secrets are subsequently revealed about the true nature of her doctor (Mark Strong) and husband (Colin Firth).  The film opens in theaters on October 31st.
  • Laggies – Only half-heads are glimpsed in the debut poster for Lynn Shelton’s dramedy about a woman (Keira Knightley) who decides to run literally away from adulthood by hanging out with a teenager (Chloe Grace Moretz) and her father (Sam Rockwell).  The film opens in theaters on October 24th.  Read Matt’s review here.

Unused JURASSIC PARK and BATMAN Posters Reveal Significantly Different Marketing Campaigns

Poster artwork has a tendency to become iconic, though that trend is becoming less frequent in the current era of giant faces and back-to-camera poses.  When you think of certain movies, a very specific poster image comes to mind.  However, sometimes that glorious poster art was one of hundreds of different possibilities and actually came close to never being released, significantly altering the film’s marketing campaign going forward.  Today, a number of unused posters for Jurassic ParkTim Burton’s Batman, and Batman Forever have been unveiled in anticipation of the release of the book The Art of John Alvin, which celebrates poster artwork from artist John Alvin, whose resume also includes Blazing Saddles, E.T, and The Lion King.  The unused Jurassic Park posters and Batman posters are actually pretty fantastic, offering a glimpse at just how differently these films might have been introduced to audiences.

Hit the jump to take a closer look at some of the unused Jurassic Park and Batman posters.  The Art of John Alvin will be released on August 16th.
