A couple of months ago, we posted the first trailer for Michael and Peter Spierig’s upcoming sci-fi film, Predestination, and through the power of time travel, another trailer is now upon us!  Ethan Hawke, who previously collaborated with the brother directors in the 2009 vampiric horror film Daybreakers, stars as the enigmatic lead in this mind-bending picture.  It’s inspired by Robert Heinlein’s short story “All You Zombies”, so if you’re familiar with the source material then you should have a fair idea of where this picture is going. Possible spoilers aside, it’s still got potential to be a taut character-driven thriller, as this new trailer suggests.

Also starring Noah Taylor and Sarah SnookPredestination opens in theaters on January 9th.  Hit the jump to watch the new trailer.

PREDESTINATION Trailer Chooses an Engaging Science Fiction Scenario

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about Predestination, the time travel project that reteams Ethan Hawke with his Daybreakers directors The Spierig Brothers.  The last update we got was that Hawke had finished the film about a year ago, then nothing.  Then today we suddenly get a trailer for the film based on the 1959 Robert Heinlein short story “All You Zombies.”

And that trailer looks pretty cool.  It definitely seems like it mixes elements of Minority Report with elements of Looper, though the dating of its source material should clear up any claims of aping the latter.  Sarah Snook looks like she’s being put to unique use as well, with a remarkable transformation at the trailer’s halfway point.  My only real concern here is that they’re showing too much.  Sony will be distributing the film in the U.S. but a release date hasn’t been announced at the moment.  Hit the jump for the Predestination trailer.

Ethan Hawke continues to prove that no genre is without its merits and no story too daunting as he takes on roles as wildly different as the thrillers of Sinister and The Purge to the dramatic romance of Before Midnight.  Starting this Friday, Hawke will take his place behind the wheel of a Ford Shelby Super Snake in an attempt to rescue his character’s wife in Courtney Solomon’s high-speed thriller, Getaway.

During a recent press day for the film, we were able to talk to Hawke in a one-on-one interview that ranged from his training and experience driving the suped-up hot rod in Getaway, his reaction on the reception of Before Midnight, and his reflection on his career so far.  Hawke also talked a bit about his upcoming roles, including completing his work with director Richard Linklater on their untitled 12-year project, starring in Michael Almereyda’s Cymbeline, Michael and Peter Spierig’s Predestination and even a possible reunion with writer-director Andrew Niccol (Gattaca).  Hit the jump for the full interview.

Ethan Hawke to Star in PREDESTINATION for The Spierig Brothers

Ethan Hawke is set to reteam with his Daybreakers directors The Spierig Brothers, time-travel actioner Predestination. Based on the 1959 Robert Heinlein short story “All You Zombies,” this one concerns a covert temporal manipulation agency that’s tasked with jumping into the past to prevent/facilitate certain key events. Hawke will play an agent who must take highly inventive action to ensure his very existence. The original Heinlein story is a witty, mind-bending temporal-paradox that plays heavily with perspective. It’s unclear at this point exactly how closely the film will follow it; hopefully, the answer is: to the letter. Because, without spoiling anything, this one’s got a doozy of a last-act reveal.
