It’s Still a Hard-Knock Life in New ANNIE Trailer Starring Quvenzhané Wallis, Rose Byrne, Cameron Diaz, and Jamie Foxx

Sony Pictures has released new Annie trailer.  The film stars Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) in the title role as a young, happy, street-tough foster kid living with the mean Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz) who is taken in by New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) in a thinly veiled campaign move.  I want to be excited for this movie, it’s got a good cast, and I enjoyed director Will Gluck‘s Easy A, but the trailers are falling flat for me.  The jokes aren’t landing, and it seems like it’s trying too hard to update the classic musical.  But with its holiday release date, I’m holding on to the hope that it will be a crowd-pleaser.

Sony Pictures has released a new trailer for director Will Gluck’s new musical adaptation Annie. This international trailer has a few bits of new footage that show Foxx playing things a bit more comedic and loose than some of his past few roles, with one scene in particular evoking his In Living Color days.  I’m still not crazy about the overly auto-tuned nature of the songs, but Gluck’s last two films (Easy A and Friends with Benefits) have been pleasantly surprising, so I’m interested to see how the full feature plays out.

New Images from SEX TAPE Starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel and ANNIE Starring Jamie Foxx

Sony Pictures has unveiled new images from two very different Cameron Diaz films slated for release this year.  First up is director Jake Kasdan’s (Bad Teacher) comedy Sex Tape, which stars Diaz and Jason Segel as a couple who, after discovering that their three-hour intimate video has been stolen, set out to recover the tape and ensure that their reputations aren’t ruined.  These images give us a first look at the ensemble beyond Diaz and Segel, as we see Rob Lowe, Ellie Kemper, and Rob CorddrySex Tape opens in theaters July 25th.

The other Cameron Diaz film is director Will Gluck’s (Easy A) musical redo Annie, in which Diaz takes on the role of the mean Miss Hannigan.  The young Quvenzhane Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) takes on the title role as an orphan who is taken in by a New York mayoral candidate (Jamie Foxx) in a thinly veiled campaign move.  The film’s first trailer promised a few full musical numbers, and these images tease just that.  Annie opens in theaters December 25th.

Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for director Will Gluck‘s (Easy A) new musical adaptation Annie.  The redo stars Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) in the title role as a young, happy, street-tough foster kid living with the mean Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz) who is taken in by New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) in a thinly veiled campaign move.  The film is very clearly a modern day update of the story, as it bears little resemblance to the 1982 film adaptation of the same musical.  Wallis appears to be sufficiently charming in the lead role, and Diaz puts an interesting spin on the mean Miss Hannigan sans drinking habit.  Some of the music is rather heavy on the auto-tune, but all-in-all this looks to be a fairly entertaining musical aimed squarely at families looking for an agreeable holiday movie outing.

Trailer Teaser for ANNIE Starring Quvenzhane Wallis, Jamie Foxx, and Cameron Diaz

The first trailer for the remake of the musical Annie will be headed our way very soon, and a sneak peek has just landed online.  For those unfamiliar with the classic musical, it centers on the eponymous orphan who is adopted by the wealthy Daddy Warbucks.  Quvenzhane Wallis is set to lead the film, and Jamie Foxx will play the Daddy Warbucks character, now called “Benjamin Stacks” and a NYC mayoral candidate in this updated version.  From this brief footage, I like what they’ve done with Annie’s look by translating the original character’s curly red hair to a wild and frizzy style.  I’m looking forward to seeing more of the movie even at the risk of having the songs “Tomorrow” and “Hard Knock Life” stuck in my head for the rest of the week.

Hit the jump to check out the preview, and check back later today to see the trailer.  The film also stars Rose Byrne and Adewale Akinnuoye-AgbajeAnnie opens December 13th.

First Featurette for Steve McQueen’s 12 YEARS A SLAVE Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, and Brad Pitt

Steve McQueen‘s 12 Years a Slave received massive acclaimed when it premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, and now the first featurette for the film has been released.  The true story is based on Solomon Northup’s autobiography of the same name, and stars Chiwetel Ejiofor (Children of Men) as Northup, an educated and married black man living in New York in 1841.  Northup was approached by two men about a job offer in Washington D.C., but when he showed up he was kidnapped and forced into slavery for over a decade.  The featurette contains plenty of new footage, and listened to the interviews, it looks like they’ve stayed pretty close to the source material.  I read the book earlier this year, and found it to be revelatory and emotional, and I couldn’t understand why it’s not on middle school reading lists alongside Uncle Tom’s Cabin.  It’s a powerful story, and it looks like it will be a powerful movie.

Hit the jump to watch the featurette.  The film also stars Michael Fassbender, Benedict CumberbatchPaul GiamattiQuvenzhane WallisSarah PaulsonPaul DanoScoot McNairyGarrett DillahuntAlfre WoodardDwight Henry, Michael K. The first trailer for director Steve McQueen’s (Shame) historical drama 12 Years a Slave has been released online.  Based on Solomon Northup’s autobiography of the same name, the film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor (Children of Men) as Northup, an educated and married black man living in 1853 New York.  Northup was approached by two men about a job offer in Washington D.C., but when he showed up he was kidnapped and forced into slavery for over a decade.  Ejiofor’s performance as Northup is every bit as hopeful as Michael Fassbender’s plantation owner Edwin Epps is terrifying.  It’s easy to get caught up in early Oscar talk from this trailer, but let’s not forget how socially relevant Northup’s story is today, even 150 years later.

Steve McQueen’s TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE, Starring Chiwetel Ejifor, Michael Fassbender, and Brad Pitt, Set for December 27th

by     Posted 1 year, 114 days ago

Fox Searchlight is getting its Oscar plans in order by announcing that they’ve set Steve McQueen‘s Twelve Years a Slave for December 27th.  Based on Solomon Northup’s autobiography of the same name, Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Northup, an educated and married black man living in 1853 New York.  Northup was approached by two men about a job offer in Washington D.C., but when he showed up he was kidnapped and forced into slavery.  The film has lined up one of the best casts in recent memory.  In addition to Ejifor, the film also stars Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Paul Dano, Scoot McNairy, Quvenzhane Wallis, Paul Giamatti, Sarah Paulson, Garrett Dillahunt, Alfre Woodard, and Benedict Cumberbatch.  Fox Searchlight’s Oscar odds also go up when you consider that two films involving slavery—Lincoln and Django Unchained—grabbed Best Picture nominations last year (somehow, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter missed the cut).

The only other film set for December 27th’s is The Weinstein Company’s Oscar-hopeful Grace of Monaco starring Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly.  I can’t wait to see Twelve Years a Slave, and I hope it will play at TIFF like McQueen’s first two features, Hunger and Shame.

Quvenzhané Wallis Confirmed to Star in ANNIE Remake

by     Posted 1 year, 146 days ago

quvenzhane-wallis-annie

There are many great things in Beasts of the Southern Wild, but Quvenzhané Wallis is the greatest.  Upon seeing the movie, I hoped Hollywood would find a place for her raw star power.  The Oscar nomination for Best Actress should help launch her, but there are more Keisha Castle-Hugheses than Anna Paquins among young Oscar nominees.  The most promising news yet is that Wallis will indeed headline the remake of Annie, following up on the speculative report from earlier in the month.  Can she sing?  I have no idea, but I can’t wait to see Wallis try.  The prospects of an Annie remake are iffy in a vacuum, but Jay-Z is curating the music and director Will Gluck (Easy A) is a good choice to make a musical with bite, so there is reason for optimism.

Will Smith, James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jay Brown, Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith, and Jay-Z will produce.  Gluck is currently rewriting the script for a Winter 2014 release.  Hit the jump for the press release with all the details.

BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD Star Quvenzhané Wallis in Consideration to Lead Will Gluck’s ANNIE Remake

Though it was only a few weeks ago that we learned that Willow Smith was no longer going to be starring in the Will Smith and Jay-Z-produced musical remake of Annie, it appears that director Will Gluck (Friends with Benefits) already has his sights set on a pretty big get to lead the film.  EW reports that Beasts of the Southern Wild star (and Best Actress nominee) Quvenzhané Wallis is apparently in consideration to star in the redo, though the magazine cautions that Gluck and the producers have yet to make any firm casting decisions.  Hit the jump for more.

SBIFF 2013: Quvenzhané Wallis Talks BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD, How Benh Zeitlin Helped with Her Performance, and More

by     Posted 1 year, 168 days ago

This year, Quvenzhané Wallis became the youngest person ever to receive a Best Actress Oscar nomination, for her performance in Beasts of the Southern Wild.  Recognized for her work as Hushpuppy, she was honored with a Virtuosos Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF).  Collider was there to cover and attend the event, and we’ve compiled the highlights of what the actress had to say, both on the press line and during the Q&A.

While there, Quvenzhané Wallis talked about getting over her nerves for her audition, what she remembers most about the film’s shoot, how director Benh Zeitlin helped with her performance, what she most likes about her character, the relationship she has with movie dad Dwight Henry, how fun the experience of making 12 Years A Slave was, how she’d like to voice an animal in an animated film, that she would love to do a musical, and that the whole awards show experience can be a little bit cuckoo.  Check out what she had to say after the jump.
