Christopher Nolan might not be the only director in the running for Ready Player One.  It’s being reported that Robert Zemeckis, Matthew Vaughn, Edgar Wright and Peter Jackson are all being considered as well.  (Looks like you got your wish, Brendan!)

The film is based on Ernest Cline’s award-winning book of the same name.  It takes place in the year 2044. The world isn’t in great shape thanks to the exhaustion of Earth’s fossil fuels, but at least people can escape the energy crisis and overpopulation by logging in to OASIS, a video game getaway.  Hit the jump for more on the directors who are supposedly in the running to bring OASIS to the big screen.

Interstellar came in second to Big Hero 6 in its opening weekend, but the original sci-fi film is already up to $545 million worldwide in less than a month.  It’s fair to say Christopher Nolan still has the clout to pick among many options for his next project.  Warner Bros. hopes to bring Nolan back home with an offer to direct the adaptation of Ready Player One.

The Ernest Cline book is set in the year 2044 and follows a teenager who sets off on a treasure hunt in an immersive online world that puts his 80s pop culture knowledge to the test.  More after the jump.

Screenwriter Zak Penn Says READY PLAYER ONE Script Is Finished; Project Might Get Stuck on Licensing Issues

Ernie Cline‘s Ready Player One is a fun read.  The story follows Wade Watts, a poverty-stricken kid in a dystopian society whose only escape is a massive, completely immersive online world.  The inventor who created the online landscape hid a massive treasure, but no one has come close to finding it until Wade finally solves the first puzzle and discovers that if he wants to proceed in his quest, he’ll have to put all of his 80s pop-culture knowledge to the test.  These trials include playing classic arcade games and quoting movies.  The online world combined with the nostalgic references give the story a unique feel where a talented director, if armed with a good script, could make a pretty enjoyable film.

The book set off a bidding war four years ago, and earlier this year, Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk) signed on to write the screenplay.  Since then, word on the project has been quiet until now.  Hit the jump for more.

We last reported on screenwriter/novelist Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One almost exactly four years ago when the hot property ignited a bidding war from major studios.  Warner Bros. eventually won that war, and have now hired screenwriter Zak Penn (The Avengers) to rewrite the script for the futuristic tale that follows a virtual game player in his dangerous quest for a deceased billionaire’s fortune.  Cline, himself the screenwriter of the 2009 film Fanboys, took the first crack at adapting Ready Player One along with Eric Eason (A Better Life).  Donald De Line and Dan Farah will produce for WB.  Hit the jump for more.

FANBOYS Writer Creates Bidding War over Upcoming Novel READY PLAYER ONE

by     Posted 4 years, 184 days ago

Screenwriter Ernie Cline (Fanboys) is about to ignite a bidding war between movie studios over his upcoming young adult novel Ready Player One.  Random House paid him an advance in the mid-six figures for the North American rights.  Here’s the plot synopsis via Deadline

A teenager named Wade Watts escapes his bleak surrounds by logging into Oasis, a globally networked virtual utopia where users lead idyllic alternate lives. When the game’s eccentric billionaire creator dies, he offers up his  fortune as the prize in an elaborate treasure hunt. Watts is pitted against powerful corporate foes and ruthless competitors who’ll do anything, in the Oasis and real world, to reach the treasure first.

The book has been described as a cross between Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and TRON.  I have to admit that this sounds very cool.
