RED 2 Blu-ray Review

Red 2 is a very obvious film.  It’s pleasant enough, but you know what you’re getting, which is old actors engaging in Bond-esque behavior.  It’s all fluffy and light, and seems geared towards Sunday afternoon cable viewing.  On that level it delivers.  But whether it’s demeaning or charming that so many talented performers are doing something so beneath them is up to the viewer.  Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren lead the cast and my review of Red 2 follows after the jump.

For years now, studios have used this weekend to launch some of summer’s biggest titles: The Dark Knight, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises. Left without a major marquee release for 2013, however, the box office instead hosted a handful of more marginal titles, including Turbo, Red 2 and R.I.P.D.  No surprise, then, that overall receipts were way down from 2012 or that only one film – The Conjuring – made a major impression.

 Title Weekend Total
1.  The Conjuring $41,530,000 $41.5
2.  Despicable Me 2 $25,100,000 $276.2
3.  Turbo $21,500,000 $31.2
4.  Grown Ups 2 $20,000,000 $79.5
5.  Red 2 $18,500,000 $18.5
6.  Pacific Rim $15,955,000 $68.2
7.  R.I.P.D. $12,760,000 $12.7
8.  The Heat $9,325,000 $129.2
9.  World War Z $5,200,000 $186.9

New posters have been released from The Lone Ranger, Red 2, Star Trek Into Darkness, and I, Frankenstein.  Briefly, The Lone Ranger international poster has the Lone Ranger in danger of falling into Helena Bonham Carter‘s cleavage, the gang is all there in the Red 2 poster, the Enterprise is still seriously screwed in the latest poster for Star Trek Into Darkness, and then there’s the first poster for I, Frankenstein.  It’s a “motion poster”, but it will be holographic when you see it at your local theater.  It doesn’t have a close-up of Aaron Eckhart as the monster, but at a distance, he’s the most handsome iteration of the creature to date.

Hit the jump to check out the posters.  The Lone Ranger opens on July 3rd.  Red 2 opens July 19th.  Star Trek Into Darkness opens in IMAX 3D on Wednesday and in 2D and 3D on Thursday.  I, Frankenstein opens in 3D on January 24th. Summit Entertainment has released a new trailer for director Dean Parisot’s (Galaxy Quest) action-comedy sequel Red 2.  The spy follow-up pits ex-CIA operative Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) against Victoria (Helen Mirren) when MI6 greenlights his assassination as Interpol’s “Most Wanted.”  This trailer introduces us to the film’s new characters, as Anthony Hopkins plays a living MacGuffin (similar to John Hurt‘s character in Crystal Skull) and Catherine Zeta-Jones plays an old flame of Willis’ character who joins the group to combat a common enemy.  Byung Hun Lee appears to bring some freshness to the film’s action sequences, and the humorous tone is spot-on thanks to the sensibilities of Parisot.  All in all, Red 2 looks to be quite the fun ride.

New Character Posters RED 2 Featuring Bruce Willis and John Malkovich

by     Posted 1 year, 96 days ago

red-2-posters-slice

A couple of new character posters have been released for director Dean Parisot’s (Galaxy Quest) Red 2, a much-anticipated sequel to an indulgently fun summer blockbuster franchise.  The new posters showcase stars Bruce Willis and John Malkovich in all of their “retired” glory.  The sequel finds Frank Moses (Willis) pitted against Victoria (Helen Mirren) when M16 gives the go ahead to his assassination by declaring him Interpol’s “most wanted.” All the while, Moses and his team work to track down a missing nuclear device.  Mary-Louise Parker will return while Catherine Zeta Jones, Byung Hun, and Anthony Hopkins join the cast.

Although Red 2 looks indulgent (much like The Expendables franchise), we all can admit that we like to watch Willis blow stuff up and we enjoy seeing Malkovich, well, be himself.  Hit the jump to check out the new posters and to read the full synopsis.  Red 2 opens on July 19th.

Opening this Thursday is director Jon M. Chu’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation.  The sequel’s story finds the Joes disbanded and outnumbered as they must square off against not only the Cobras, but also threats within their own government.  G.I. Joe: Retaliation stars Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum,  D.J. Cotrona, Elodie YungRay ParkByung-hun Lee, Ray Stevenson, Walton Goggins, RZA and Adrianne Palicki For more on the film, here’s clips, images, on set interviews, and all our previous coverage.

While some had issues with the first G.I. Joe movie, most would agree the casting of Byung-hun Lee as Storm Shadow and Ray Park as Snake Eyes was dead on.  So when Paramount decided to make the sequel and bring in a lot of new actors, I was extremely happy they kept Lee and Park.  The other day I did an exclusive phone interview with Lee to help promote the film.  We talked about his reaction to the finished film, 3D, the action sequences, what it was like having the world premiere in Korea, his preparation process, Red 2, doing action scenes with Bruce Willis, and a lot more.  Hit the jump for what he had to say.
