New CINDERELLA International Trailer Features More Magic, Spectacle

Disney has released a new international trailer for director Kenneth Branagh’s live-action Cinderella, this time with considerably more magic.  The film finds Downton Abbey alum Lily James filling the titular role, while Cate Blanchett takes on the part of the evil stepmother and Game of ThronesRichard Madden (The King of the North!) plays Prince Charming.  The first trailer wasn’t particularly encouraging as it simply looked like a scene-by-scene recreation of the animated film, but this new international trailer shows the spectacle and wonder that Branagh brings to the story in live-action form.  I’d still really like to see the version that Mark Romanek was planning, but I imagine the audience for this kind of big, sweeping, romantic iteration will be quite large.

New CINDERELLA Trailer, Poster, and Images: Disney Classic Comes to Live-Action with Lily James, Richard Madden, and Cate Blanchett

Disney has released a new Cinderella trailer and poster along with new images for director Kenneth Branagh’s live-action iteration of the classic story.  The movie is the traditional rags-to-riches story we know with a few twists like Cinderella (Lily James) meeting the prince (Richard Madden) before knowing he’s a prince, and the fairy godmother (Helena Bonham Carter) appearing in the guise of an old, beggar woman.  But the nefarious evil stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and wicked stepsisters (Sophie McShera and Holliday Granger) are still in place.  It looks like Branagh has stayed incredibly faithful to the 1950 Disney animated film, and this trailer is basically a condensed, live-action version of that entire movie.  I guess if you’re more into flesh-and-blood actors combined with lots of CG, then this will be the Cinderella for you.

Producer Simon Kinberg Says CINDERELLA Is “Very Loyal” to the Original Film and Filled with “Heart, Sweetness, Fun, and Magic”

The latest in Disney’s series of animated-to-live-action adaptations hits theaters later this month by way of Maleficent, but the studio already has another update of a beloved classic in the can: Cinderella.  The film was in development for years and initially had Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go) attached as director, but when he fell off, Disney signed Kenneth Branagh to take the helm.  The cast is led by Lily James (Downton Abbey) in the lead role with Cate Blanchett as the evil stepmother and Game of Thrones’ King of the North Richard Madden as the prince, making for quite a promising pedigree.

While speaking with writer/producer Simon Kinberg in anticipation of X-Men: Days of Future Past, Steve also asked Kinberg about Cinderella, which he produced.  Kinberg described the live-action take as “very loyal” to the 1950 animated film, but also noted that the pic has some twists and changes to keep things interesting.  Read on after the jump.

Discovery is following in History’s footsteps, expanding their brand to include scripted offerings alongside their large, unscripted catalogue.  Also like History, they’ve chosen to pick a story that goes back in time, and in the case of Klondike, one that compliments their myriad of gold-related programming.  The instinct is not wrong, the execution is good.  Klondike, produced by Ridley Scott, focuses on the late 1890s Klondike gold rush, as explored through the experiences of a young fortune seeker, Bill Haskell (Game of ThronesRichard Madden).  It will premiere in three, two-hour installments on consecutive nights.  Hit the jump for why, “if it’s in the newspapers, it’s over.”

Although writer-director Patrice Leconte’s romantic period drama A Promise played at both the Venice and Toronto film festivals, the French filmmaker’s English-language debut has yet to land a U.S. release date (though it will premiere in France this coming April).  Inspired by Stefan Zweig’s novel “Journey into the Past” and set in 1912 Germany, the film centers a love triangle between an ailing factory owner (Alan Rickman), his young bride (Rebecca Hall), and his protégé, played by Game of Thrones star Richard Madden.  We premiered an exclusive clip from the film a few months back, but the first trailer is now available.  Hit the jump to check it out.

Filming Begins on Kenneth Branagh’s Live-Action CINDERELLA; First Image and Official Synopsis Released

Principal photography has begun on Kenneth Branagh‘s live-action version of Cinderella, and Disney has provided a press release containing the first image and official synopsis.  For the most part, it’s the story we all know: nice girl, treated badly by step-mothers and step-sisters, eventually gets to a happily ever after with the prince.  Looking at the synopsis, there are two big changes: she meets the prince in the woods one day without knowing he’s the prince, and “a kindly beggar woman” is probably the fairy godmother considering she’s “armed with a pumpkin and a few mice.”  Because if a beggar woman comes to you with a pumpkin and some mice, she’s clearly going to make your dreams come true.

Hit the jump for the image and the press release.  The film stars Lily James, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Richard Madden, Sophie McShera, Holliday Granger, Nonso Anozie, Derek Jacobi, and Stellan SkarsgardCinderella opens March 13, 2015.

Comic-Con: GAME OF THRONES Panel Recap; Cast and Crew Remember the Fallen, Talk Season 4 and Participate in a Fan Q&A Along with a Surprise Guest

Game of Thrones was an odd presence at Comic-Con’s Hall H last year. On the one hand, it was an obvious inclusion. It’s hugely popular among geeks, and it can fill the room easily. But on the other hand, they had nothing to show because filming on the upcoming hadn’t begun. That also means that showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff weren’t on hand to answer questions. Instead, the panel rests entirely on the actors and their interactions with fans. I assumed we’d be getting the same thing at this year’s Comic-Con panel, but with more actors and a different moderator (Elvis Mitchell instead of author George R.R. Martin). Instead, Weiss and Benioff were on hand, they had some fun stuff to show, and aside from Mitchell’s weak, scattershot questions for the panel, it was a big improvement.

Hit the jump for a recap of the panel. Game of Thrones returns spring 2014.

Disney is closing in on its titular female lead for Cinderella.  The project suffered a bit of a hiccup when director Mark Romanek exited the film this past January over creative differences.  Kenneth Branagh subsequently stepped in to take the helm, only to see Emma Watson come and go from the lead role in the span of a week.  Cate Blanchett is still set to star as the wicked stepmother, and now Branagh has narrowed down the lead to three actresses.  Hit the jump to find out who’s testing for the lead role and which Game of Thrones actor is being eyed to play the Prince.
