The first trailer for director Adam Wingard's horror film You're Next is now online. The story centers on a family reunion that turns deadly when the family becomes targeted by masked murderers. Their only hope is Erin (Sharni Vinson), a girlfriend of one of the family members. I really dug the flick when I saw it at TIFF 2011, and I'm excited that it's finally coming out. The trailer feels a tad on the generic side, but it doesn't give away too much, and I like the use of Lou Reed's "Perfect Day".

Written by Simon Barrett, You're Next also stars Joe Swanberg, AJ Bowen, Amy Seimetz, Barbara Crampton, Wendy Glenn, Margaret Laney, Rob Moran, and Nicholas Tucci, and Ti West. The film opens August 23rd. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

Click over to Apple to see the trailer in HD.

Here's the synopsis for You're Next:
One of the smartest and most terrifying films in years, YOU’RE NEXT reinvents the genre by putting a fresh twist on home-invasion horror. When a gang of masked, ax-wielding murderers descend upon the Davison family reunion, the hapless victims seem trapped…until an unlikely guest of the family proves to be the most talented killer of all.

Before Fantastic Fest even began, word was starting to spread about Adam Wingard’s You’re Next: early word out of the Toronto International Film Festival had the film pegged as a “must-see”, and—just hours into Fantastic Fest 2011—the film became even more buzzworthy when Lionsgate announced that they’d purchased the film for distribution in 2012. All this added up to what might have been the most sought-after, talked-about screening at Fantastic Fest thus far (yes, even moreso than The Human Centipede 2), and—miracle of miracles—I managed to score a ticket to tonight’s midnight screening of the film. Was it worth all that buzz? Prepare yourself for a glowing descent into hyperbole, after the jump.

All day long, people have been asking each other, “You get into You’re Next tonight?” Adam Wingard’s film—a home-invasion horror flick that some were comparing to the vastly-inferior The Strangers prior to seeing it for themselves—was the hot ticket at Fantastic Fest 2011 tonight, mainly because Lionsgate decided to cut the film’s two screenings down to one: apparently, purchasing a film for distribution means limiting the number of people who might see (and rave about) your film. That logic doesn’t sit well with me, but whatta I know? I’m but a simple film critic/yutz with a keyboard. I leave the big decisions to the marketing geniuses in Hollywood.

It’s a real shame, though. Before tonight’s screening (which I had to fight tooth and nail to get into, but it turned out to be worth every email, called-in favor, and ...

Adam Wingard's You're Next is the home invasion horror sub-genre played to near-perfection. Through a terrific blend of setting, characters, pacing, and creative kills, Wingard delivers a horror film that even non-horror fans can enjoy. The film falters slightly when it offers more information than necessary, but you'll suspend your disbelief for the fun, thrills, and excitement you'll get in return.

Crispian Davison (A.J. Bowen) has brought his girlfriend Erin (Sharni Vinson) to meet his family at their secluded country house for his parents' 30th wedding anniversary. Along with Crispian's father Paul (Rob Moran) and mother Aubrey (Barbara Crampton), the guest list includes his brothers Drake (Joe Swanberg) and Felix (Nicholas Tucci), his sister Aimee (Amy Seimetz) and their significant others Kelly (Margaret Laney), Zee (Wendy Glenn), and Tariq (Ti West). There's some tension between Crispian and Drake, but Wingard efficiently sets up the relationships and establishes that this isn't a group of people we want to see dead, but a regular family who don't deserve the violence that's about to befall them. After a tense first act, the family comes under siege by a group of masked, unknown attackers whose motives may not extend beyond mindless killing. Erin springs into action and tries to protect the family from the killers picking them off one-by-one.

Wingard uses the country house perfectly as his setting. It's in the middle of nowhere, it's nighttime, and the victims don't know how many psychos are inside and outside the house. But the house offers its own ...

So you know that, in a post-Twilight world, we're nowhere near done with vampire movies, right? To wit, Variety reports that the Rob Moran vampire comic series Blood Nation--"the story of a country overrun by vampires and walled off from the rest of the world"--is bound for Hollywood. In terms of recent Gothic reference points, this sounds more Daybreakers than Twilight. But my gambler's instinct suggests that the former's $30 million take does not inspire a greenlight, while the latter's status as billion dollar franchise ($1.12 billion worldwide before this summer's Eclipse) does so in spades. Too cynical?

Still, it sounds like a neat foundation for a movie, so I'll take it no matter the muse. The comic comes from Platinum Studios, whose Cowboys & Aliens lured director Jon Favreau and stars Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, and Harrison Ford for a summer 2011 release.
