First KILL THE MESSENGER Trailer Features Jeremy Renner and a Conspiracy Involving the Government and Crack

Focus Features has released the first Kill the Messenger trailer.  Directed by Michael Cuesta (Homeland, Dexter), the film is based on the true story of news reporter Gary Webb, whose life was ruined when he linked the CIA to a scheme to arm Contra rebels in Nicaragua and import cocaine into California.  His investigation not only threatened to ruin his career, but also his life and the life of his family.  This looks like it will be a good showcase for Renner, and while I like seeing him in blockbusters and high-profile awards contenders, I like that he’s going to be in a nuts-and-bolts story centered around a worthwhile topic.

First Trailer for David Fincher’s GONE GIRL Starring Ben Affleck

20th Century Fox has released the first Gone Girl trailer. Directed by David Fincher, the adaptation of the Gillian Flynn novel of the same name stars Ben Affleck as a man who becomes the lead suspect when his wife (Rosamund Pike) disappears on their fifth wedding anniversary.  This trailer continues Fincher’s streak of brilliantly repurposing songs to introduce his films to audiences (“Creep” for The Social Network and “Immigrant Song” for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) as a rendition of Elvis Costello‘s “She” plays over a series of scenes from the dark drama that tell viewers everything may not be exactly as clear-cut as it seems.  I enjoyed Flynn’s novel and I’m incredibly eager to see how Fincher chronicles the twisted relationship between Affleck’s Nick and Pike’s Amy, and this debut trailer is an excellent mood-setter for the pic.  October cannot come fast enough.

Robert Rodriguez‘s new television network El Rey has released the first trailer for its flagship series From Dusk Till Dawn: The SeriesD.J. Cotrona and Zane Holtz star as the Gecko brothers (subbing in for George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino in the 1996 movie), fighting the undead as they run from the law.  The production values fail to impress—the painful attempts at stylish cool don’t help—but hopefully it plays better in the context of the hourlong series than it does a two-and-a-half minute trailer.

Rodriguez directed the first two episodes of the ten-episode season.  Jesse Garcia, Don Johnson, Wilmer Valderrama, and Robert Patrick co-star.  From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series premieres March 11 on El Rey.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

Production Stars on KILL THE MESSENGER Starring Jeremy Renner; Andy Garcia, Michael Sheen, and Many More Join Cast

Earlier this year, we reported that Jeremy Renner was tapped to star in the thriller Kill the Messenger, directed by Michael Cuesta (Homeland).  Renner plays real-life reporter Gary Webb whose life was ruined when he linked the CIA to a scheme to arm Contra rebels in Nicaragua and import cocaine into California.  After publishing his 1996 series “Dark Alliance,” Webb became the target of a smear campaign by the CIA and rival journalists that eventually drove him to depression.  News on the film went silent until about a month ago when we it was announced that Rosemarie DeWitt, Paz Vega, and Michael Kenneth Williams had joined the cast.  It turns out the line-up is stacked with even more talent.  Production has begun on the flick, and a press release has revealed that the impressive cast also includes Andy Garcia, Tim Blake Nelson, Robert Patrick, Barry Pepper, Oliver Platt, Michael Sheen, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Trailer for LOVELACE Starring Amanda Seyfried and Peter Sarsgaard

by     Posted 1 year, 81 days ago

Radius-TWC and Millennium Entertainment have released the trailer for the biopic, Lovelace.  The film stars Amanda Seyfried as the titular porn star who rose to prominence following 1972’s Deep Throat, the first pornographic feature film to be a mainstream success.  Lovelace would eventually go on to claim that her husband Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard) physically and verbally abused her, and coerced her into the pornography business.  When I caught the film at Sundance, I thought the script and structure were somewhat weak, but Seyfried and Sarsgaard saved the picture with their memorable performances.  This trailer does what most indie trailers are doing these days: showing you the whole movie to the point where there are scenes from the very end.  It’s disheartening because not only is it a lazy way of making trailer, but it’s probably turning more people away from the movie rather than drawing them in.

If this approach doesn’t bother you, hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Sharon Stone, Adam Brody, Chloe Sevigny, Juno Temple, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, and James FrancoLovelace opens August 9th.

GANGSTER SQUAD Blu-ray Review

Considering that the film was bumped around from September to January due to a national tragedy, it would be nice to feel a little sorry for Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad.  The period film, which casts Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling as cops going against Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) for control of Los Angeles, has a great cast and period setting.  On top of that, The Untouchables is a great film and it wouldn’t be the worst thing to see more films like it.  And yet, Gangster Squad is a total miss.  My review of the Blu-ray follows after the jump.

IDENTITY THIEF Review

by     Posted 1 year, 227 days ago

The most remarkable thing about Identity Thief is how a movie this dumb could keep insulting its audience’s intelligence.  Aside from being a comedy with no laughs, screenwriter Craig Mazin rests almost his entire plot on coincidences, and one-dimensional characters.  The comic talents of stars Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy are absolutely wasted on a limp road movie that gets lazier and more tiresome with every passing moment.  The best joke the film can conjure is a punch to the throat, which would almost be preferable to sitting through this chore of a picture.

GANGSTER SQUAD Review

by     Posted 1 year, 255 days ago

It’s a bit disappointing that Ruben Fleischer‘s Gangster Squad can live in such a rich setting and still feel so light.  As seen through a grand tradition of films dating back over 70 years, post-war Los Angeles was boozy, hedonistic, dangerous, and dark.  Gangster Squad waters down this colorful world, and simply coasts on being an amusing, frivolous action film.  There’s nothing wrong with that, and with a strong cast at his disposal, Fleischer finds a nice blend between the style he brought to Zombieland and the spirit of the time period.  Unfortunately, a thin plot and even thinner characters make Gangster Squad as intense as a drive-by shooting and just as fleeting.

TOP 5: MAN OF STEEL, THE HOBBIT Interviews, PACIFIC RIM, GANGSTER SQUAD Set Visit, AFTER EARTH

collider-top-5-slice

I offered a similar sentiment following the tragedy at Aurora, CO back in July and I’ll do the same today: the event that unfolded yesterday in Newtown, CT is inexcusable and genuinely heartbreaking, even from a distance. The optimist in me wants to believe that any negative situation can be used to educate and improve the world we live in going forward. In this case, I’m hopeful but unsure that’s possible. On behalf of everyone here at Collider, I want to offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of those who were lost yesterday.

As petty as it may seem, I feel fortunate to be able to offer a bit of diversion to your day with this week’s Top 5. Included in a trailer-heavy rotation this week is a new cut from Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel, The Hobbit interviews with Martin Freeman, Andy Serkis and more, the first trailer for Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim, Andre’s coverage from his Gangster Squad set visit, and the first look at Will Smith and Jaden Smith gallivanting across the human unfriendly Mother Earth found in M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth. A brief recap and link to each will greet you after the jump.

Though Robert Patrick may never escape his first breakthrough role as the T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, over the last twenty years he’s built a great resume as a character actor. In Gangster Squad he plays a seasoned vet that’s part cowboy, and it’s a part that Patrick was born to play. We got a chance to talk to the actor about his character and some of his previous work while on the set of Gangster Squad. Our interview follows after the jump.

The new ABC drama series Last Resort, from co-creators Shawn Ryan (The Shield) and Karl Gajdusek, tells a suspenseful, emotional and action-packed story about what happens when a U.S. submarine crew receives an order to fire nuclear weapons at a foreign country, and then ignores that order.  With nowhere left to turn, Captain Marcus Chaplin (Andre Braugher) and XO Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman) take the sub on the run and bring the men and women of theColorado to an island where they will find refuge, as they try to clear their names and get back home.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actor Robert Patrick – who plays Master Chief Joseph Prosser, a career military man and longtime confidant to the Captain, as well as the designated leader of all enlisted crew on the Colorado – talked about how much fun he’s having on what he sees as a very important show, how he views his character, what’s to come for his storyline, whether or not he thinks he could survive on a submarine himself, and what he thinks it is, in himself, that leads people to cast him as tough guys and villains.  He also talked about the experience of making Gangster Squad, due out in theaters on January 11, 2013.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.
