All good things must come to an end and so it is with FOX's spectacular sci-fi series, Fringe, which will conclude its fifth and final season in a two-hour finale on Friday, January 18th starting at 8PM ET/PT. Created by J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, Fringe was an X-Files for a new generation, as it followed a team of specialized investigators into all things paranormal and supernatural. Though it's struggled with ratings throughout the years, the show's smart writing, impressive cast and dark humor have earned Fringe a rabid fan base, one that sadly will not get to see the cast and crew return to Comic-Con any longer.

Starring Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson, John Noble, Lance Reddick, Jasika Nicole and Blair Brown, the two-hour series finale of Fringe will also celebrate its 100th episode. Your guess is as good as mine as to what the final episode code word will be. Hit the jump for the full press release.

The full press release for the series finale of Fringe follows below:
THE FIFTH AND FINAL SEASON OF “FRINGE”CONCLUDES WITH A TWO-HOUR SERIES FINALE,INCLUDING THE 100TH EPISODE,FRIDAY, JANUARY 18, ON FOX

Climactic Nine-Episode Countdown Continues with an All-New Episode Tonight

As the Fringe team fights for humanity’s future in the fifth and final season, the imaginative journey toward the end of the acclaimed series will culminate in a climactic conclusion during the two-hour final-two-episodes event Friday, Jan. 18 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. This milestone date will also celebrate the series’ 100th episode.

Early reports have director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) circling the Van Helsing reboot that stars Tom Cruise and is being produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Sanders and Universal apparently have mutual interest in maintaining their working relationship. While the feature debut of Sanders brought modest box office success, the film was eventually overshadowed by the rumored affair between the director and star Kristen Stewart. Cruise is currently filming All You Need is Kill and there is a good chance that Van Helsing will be his next project. In other words, Universal needs to lock down a director soon. Can Sanders resurrect Van Helsing? Hit the jump for more.

Twitch reports that Sanders and Universal are in early talks for the helmer to take on another possible franchise with Van Helsing. Hugh Jackman starred in the title role of Stephen Sommers' 2004 iteration. This time, the vampire hunter will be played by Cruise and the plot will be more "grounded in reality" according to producer Kurtzman. Cruise aims to be back in box office control with his action adaptation Jack Reacher opening later this year and Joseph Kosinski's sci-fi epic Oblivion set for next spring. Oh, and then there's the rumored sequel to Top Gun along with the eventual Mission: Impossible 5 in the future. We'll see which direction Cruise heads next, but Van Helsing could be a viable option.

Sanders, meanwhile, has yet to be confirmed for the sequel/spin-off to Snow White and the Huntsman, so Universal may be setting Van Helsing up to keep him in house ...

The critically acclaimed and fan-favorite sci-fi drama series Fringe is back for a fifth and final 13-episode season. Promising to deliver a climactic and satisfying conclusion, things will pick up in 2036, when the Observers have become ruthless rulers who will reign supreme. Now, the Fringe team will make a final stand, bringing together all that they have witnessed, in order to battle and protect the world.

During this recent interview to promote the show’s return, showrunner/writer/executive producer J.H. Wyman talked about when they decided to set the final season in the future, where Peter (Joshua Jackson) and Olivia’s (Anna Torv) journey will go and how Walter (John Noble) has changed now, how he’s learned to constrain his ideas with a TV show budget, his reticence in changing the show so dramatically for the final season, what has changed most from the original plan, the major challenges they faced in bringing everything to a satisfying conclusion, whether there was always an intention to make the Observers the bad guys, and what he will take away from his experience on Fringe. Check out what he had to say after the jump, but be are that there are some spoilers.

Question: When you were working on “Letters of Transit” last season, did you already know that 2036 was going to be the focus of this season, or was that originally just a stand-alone story?

J.H. WYMAN: Well, we knew that traditionally, in the 19th episode spot of each season, we always went off the beaten ...

The Spider-Man reboot The Amazing Spider-Man was a sizeable hit this summer at the box office, but the film was surrounded by an air of production troubles. The film was only director Marc Webb’s second feature, and was a huge step up from his swell but small-scale debut (500) Days of Summer. A fair amount of reshoots took place, and when the film hit theaters we saw that much of the footage from the film’s marketing (including the entire “Untold Story” storyline) had been removed from the finished pic.

Sony hired Transformers and Star Trek scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to rewrite the script for a sequel before the first film came out, but Webb’s involvement in the follow-up was less clear. Though many assumed another director would be brought in to helm a more commercial (ie. action-centric) sequel, it now looks like Webb is coming back after all with his leads in tow. Hit the jump for more.

Though the involvement of Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone was all but guaranteed for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Webb was a bit of a question mark. Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad said in July that Webb might not direct the sequel due to “obstacles,” which seemed like an interesting comment to make on the heels of the first film’s success. We learned a few weeks later that Webb made a previous deal with Fox Searchlight to direct two movies for that studio, and with (500) Days of Summer fulfilled he still owed ...

Things are moving rather quickly on Universal’s reboot of The Mummy. It was announced back in May that Star Trek screenwriters/prolific producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman would be developing reboots of both The Mummy and Van Helsing, with Tom Cruise attached to star in the latter. In subsequent interviews Kurtzman hinted at approaching the reboots with a darker tone than their original counterparts, and sure enough, Underworld and Total Recall director Len Wiseman is now being lined up to take the helm of The Mummy.

Hit the jump for more, including Wiseman’s thoughts on the monster redo.

The script for the Mummy reboot is being written by Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaihts, and Wiseman tells Deadline that he connected with the project’s darker take:
“When I first heard Universal was relaunching this, that is the image that popped into my head, the period tale, the old monster, but when Bob and Alex pitched it, there was a great new take and approach, and a very different mummy as well. It’s a darker twist on the material, a scarier version.”
Wiseman already has a professional relationship with Kurtzman and Orci as he helmed the pilot for their Hawaii Five-0 TV series reboot and he’s also set to direct the pilot for their Sleepy Hollow TV adaptation, so the move makes sense. Kurtman notes that they’re reaching into the roots of The Mummy with this reboot, and he adds that the original film “at its beating heart is a horror movie and then an action movie.” In other ...

Just a few short days ago, Chris Pine talked briefly about his experience on Star Trek 2, saying the film would keep its comedic elements, but the crew of the Starship Enterprise would face an even greater threat. Now, co-star Zachary Quinto has a few words of his own to share on the J.J. Abrams' sequel, calling it "bigger and bolder." Quinto had much more than that to say, and you can read it after the jump.

Star Trek 2, also starring Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Alice Eve and Benedict Cumberbatch opens May 17th, 2013.

Quinto recently spoke with The Wrap about his opinion on Star Trek 2, as well as a number of other upcoming projects for the actor. Here's Quinto's reaction in a nutshell:
"It was bigger. It was bolder, I think, than the first one, and that was pretty big and bold from my stand point. I’m really excited to see what they do with it."
The actor has wrapped filming his part, but was non-committal as far as plotlines go (not uncommon for an Abrams' flick):
"I feel like, you know, my work is done on the movie right now and until we have to go and promote it, then my work remains done and I let J.J. and his incredible team of people get in there and do the work that they need to do now."
While I'm sure a big-budget film like Star Trek 2 helps keep Quinto relevant, it doesn't seem to be his heart's desire:
“I feel very fulfilled, but I don't feel particularly attached to what the ...

While Chris Pine is currently shooting Jack Ryan in downtown Manhattan (you can see images of him and Kevin Costner here), he recently spoke out about the tone of Star Trek 2. Specifically, Pine was quick to mention that the J.J. Abrams sequel doesn't follow the rules set down by Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, which says a follow-up film should be "like the original, only darker." As the first Star Trek had its lighter moments (Pine's Kirk having an allergic reaction and being repeatedly injected by Bones), the sequel appears to keep the comedic element amidst a greater threat to Starfleet.

Also starring Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve and Benedict Cumberbatch, Star Trek 2 opens May 17th, 2013. Hit the jump to read what Pine had to say.

TotalFilm recently spoke to Pine about the upcoming Star Trek sequel and he was quick to establish the tone of the film by saying:
"We're not making Batman. That's not our deal."
Pine also commented on the inclusion of comedy in the film, against the backdrop of an imminent threat:
"There's comedy, which I think J.J. does a great job of, but, like the first one, there's some serious issues being dealt with. And I'd say the threat is even greater in this one."
It looks like the whole crew of the USS Enterprise will get to experience a bit more development this time around since Star Trek served to reintroduce the characters to the audience. As Pine says:
"The force [the Enterprise crew] are met with is much more frightening. It's relentlessly action-packed and in terms of character development it goes places ...

The ever-busy Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have added yet another project to their development slate. Heat Vision reports that Kurtzman and Orci have signed on to produce an adaptation of the fantasy adventure book series Dragonology. Instead of reading like novels, the books are presented as long-lost works written by Dr. Ernest Drake in the 19th century. The central concept of the film is that dragons actually exist, and a team of dragonologists “embark on the quest to avert a plot to use the world’s remaining dragons to wipe out humanity.” Leonard Hartman wrote the initial draft of the script, but he's now been moved to an executive producer role as Kurtzman and Orci look for a new writer to tackle the adaptation.

Following the initial book, subsequent entries in the Dragonology series centered on the anatomy of certain dragons, how to summon dragons, and learning the secrets of dragons. Kurtzman and Orci recently signed a deal with Universal to develop and produce reboots of Van Helsing and The Mummy, and they’re also writing and producing the Amazing Spider-Man sequel. Hit the jump to read a synopsis for Dragonology.

Here’s a synopsis for Dragonology:
For true believers only, a lavishly illustrated reproduction of a legendary volume by the world’s most distinguished dragonologist. Don’t let it fall into the wrong hands!

Do you believe in dragons? Now, for the first time, the long-lost research of renowned nineteenth century dragonologist Dr. Ernest Drake is presented in all its eccentric glory, happily bridging the gap between dragon ...

A Legend of Sleepy Hollow series is in the works for the 2012 pitch season. The project will be written by Transformers scribes (it had writers?) Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who are adapting it from a Phillip Iscove script. Len Wiseman (Underworld) is set to direct. The trio also worked together on the Hawaii Five-0 pilot.

The project is reportedly being shopped to Fox, CBS, ABC and NBC. Given the recent popularity of reworking fairy tales and mystery stories, Sleepy Hollow shouldn't have trouble finding a home. But it may need to add some zombies, werewolves and/or aliens to really look attractive. Ichabod Crane: Vampire Hunter has a nice ring to it, don't you think? For more on the project, hit the jump.

Though Washington Irving's classic has been remade and exhibited in an exhaustive number of formats and ways (including musicals), this rendition of Sleepy Hollow promises to be slightly different, mostly by not resembling The Legend of Sleep Hollow at all. Deadline reports that the series is said to be a modern-day supernatural thriller wherein Ichabod Crane will now pair up with Sleepy Hollow's female sheriff (do I sense shades of Elementary with this choice?) to solve mysteries in the town, which is torn between good and evil (Grimm, anyone?).

Kurtzman and Orci also wrote the pilot for Fox's Fringe, and are probably best known for their writing credits on The Legend of Zoro, Mission Impossible III and Star Trek. Wiseman's directing credits include Live Free Or Die Hard as well as the upcoming Total Recall remake. Genre-wise, at least, the trio seem primed to helm a series like Sleepy Hollow, though the project could really go either way.

Though Tom Cruise had been involved in a reboot of Van Helsing since 2010, the project didn’t actually get moving until this past May when it was announced that Star Trek and Transformers screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman would be producing the pic with Cruise set to star. Given that Orci and Kurtzman are juggling a number of major projects at the moment (Star Trek 2, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Ender’s Game, and the release of People Like Us), we haven’t heard much about the direction this reboot will take.

Kurtzman recently talked to us about how The Dark Knight's realistic influence has informed their take on the story, and now the producer has spoken a bit more about grounding their Van Helsing in reality and how their version will differ from previous iterations of the story. Hit the jump for more.

In an interview with Crave Online, Kurtzman talked about how they’re starting to approach Van Helsing:
“Well, I don’t want to give away too much, because we are actually at the very beginning of talking about what to do with it. But I do feel like the Van Helsing that Anthony Hopkins plays in [Bram Stoker’s] Dracula is sort of the parody version of it, and the Van Helsing that Hugh Jackman played was obviously in a different place as well. I think that these kinds of movies have evolved a lot since then. You know, The Dark Knight was a major, major corner-turning moment in the way that genre and superhero stories ...

This weekend, Collider got to participate in the press junket for People Like Us, a family dramedy inspired by true events from the life of writer/director Alex Kurtzman. The story follows Sam (Chris Pine), a twenty-something guy who learns that his father has suddenly died, leaving behind a secret 30-year-old daughter (Elizabeth Banks) that Sam never knew about, and he is forced to re-examine his own life and re-think everything he thought he knew about his family.

While we will post what Kurtzman had to say about his feature film debut closer to its June 29th release, we did want to share what he had to say to us about the emotional experience of returning to the Enterprise for the Star Trek sequel, how insane it was to be able to really walk around the ship, how the set was built for the hallways to connect so that director J.J. Abrams could play whole scenes without a cut, and how they’re still in discussion about when the first official images or teaser trailer might be released. He also talked about what made he and business partner Roberto Orci want to sign on to write the sequel for The Amazing Spider-Man, how they just wrapped Ender’s Game (which takes place 70 years after a horrific alien war) and Now You See Me (about FBI agents who track a team of illusionists that pull off bank heists during their performances) as producers, and how excited they are to be rebooting Van Helsing and ...

While you may have to wait a while to find out who the antagonist is in J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek sequel, Star Trek the video game has put its villains front and center. The Gorn, a lizard-like race of alien warriors Hell-bent on conquering the galaxy, will terrorize Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock in the Paramount Pictures and Namco Bandai game. The cast of Star Trek, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, John Cho and Anton Yelchin will lend their voices to the game. The standalone co-op is based on Abrams' original Star Trek and continues the adventures of the iconic heroes. Players will control Kirk and Spock as they traverse across unexplored planets and alien battleships in an attempt to stop the Gorn in an original story written by BAFTA award-winner, Marianne Krawczyk (God of War) with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Plenty of new images and concept art await you, along with the fully detailed press release, after the jump. As this announcement was made as part of the ongoing Electronic Entertainment Expo, catch up on all of our previous coverage of E3 here.

Check out the full press release below, followed by new images and concept art from the Star Trek video game, coming to consoles early 2013. If you missed the game trailer, we've posted that below as well:

Harrison Ford reportedly called Ender's Game, "one of the most emotional science fiction movies he has ever seen." If you're a fan of Orson Scott Card's award-winning novel, this article should let you breathe a little easier about the upcoming Gavin Hood adaptation. While I was a bit leery about Hood's attachment to my beloved property (see X-Men Origins: Wolverine), the Ender's Game production blog has been shedding some interesting light on the filmmaker's approach. Hood and producer Roberto Orci (Star Trek) really seem to get the gist of the novel; that should elicit a sigh of relief followed quickly by a jolt of excitement from fans. Orci recently participated in a Q&A on the blog in which he commented on the tone of the picture, the relationship between Colonel Hyrum Graff (Harrison Ford) and Ender (Asa Butterfield), as well as his favorite scenes.

Ender's Game tells the story of Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, a young boy sent away to Battle School to hone his military skills and, hopefully, save the world from an impending alien invasion. Also starring Abigail Breslin, Sir Ben Kingsley, Hailee Steinfeld, Nonso Anozie and Viola Davis, the picture opens November 1st, 2013. We've also got some images from the production, so hit the jump to check it out!

It's hard to believe that the film won't open until November of 2013, but I'm definitely getting the feeling that the production is on the right track. Hood and Orci each appear to be as big a fan of ...

If we can trust the Tweet, then Star Trek 2 and Zachary Quinto have officially wrapped. Quinto sent out an image and a brief message over Twitter today that would suggest the follow up to J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek has wrapped. After these set photos and video initially leaked earlier this year, we haven't see a whole lot out of the Starfleet camp (here's a hat). Quinto stays the course with this Tweet, as far as images go, but it's good to know the production has wrapped up. Maybe now we can get an official title. The Untitled Star Trek Sequel, starring Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, John Cho, Alice Eve, Peter Weller, Noel Clarke, and Benedict Cumberbatch. , opens May 17th, 2013. Hit the jump to see the image along with a recap of what we know about the sequel.

Check out the image and message left by @ZacharyQuinto earlier today:
zq. picture wrap. holy shit.

Yeah, admittedly it's not really much of anything. Also, as of the writing of this article, @simonpegg posted this confirmatory tweet:

Wind, reel and print. The countdown to May 2013 has begun.

So it's safe to assume Spock and Scotty can hang up the Starfleet uniforms for a little while. If you'd like to steer clear of spoilers, quit reading now. We're going to do a quick wrap-up of what we know about the sequel so far:

A new Star Trek comic series will bridge the original movie to the sequel.

A bit over a month after the first trailer for long-lost-sibling drama People Like Us debuted online, a sizzle reel (fancy industry talk for “featurette”) has followed. Basically, it’s a lot of the stuff we’ve seen before (plus some new bits), mixed with footage of first-time director Alex Kurtzman (co-writer of Star Trek and Transformers) and stars Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks discussing the film. Co-written by Kurtzman, frequent collaborator Roberto Orci and Jody Lambert, the film sees a debt-ridden salesman (Pine) who must split a sizeable inheritance with a sister (Banks) he didn’t know about; as he struggles with the “But it’s so much money!” quandary, he forges a relationship with his unsuspecting sis and her young son.

If you thought the first trailer betrayed a bit too much schmaltz, this one won’t do much to sway you. But, at the very least, it improves upon its predecessor by cutting the line “Sometimes the past is a present.” Shudder. Hit the jump to check it out. People Like Us (previously titled Welcome to the People) also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Olivia Wilde, Jon Favreau, and Mark Duplass. It will hit theaters on June 29.

Here’s the official synopsis:
From DreamWorks Pictures comes ‘People Like Us,’ a drama/comedy about family, inspired by true events, starring Chris Pine (‘Star Trek’) as Sam, a twenty-something, fast-talking salesman, whose latest deal collapses on the day he learns that his father has suddenly died. Against his wishes, Sam is called home, where he must put his father’s estate ...

Star Trek screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman recently signed an exclusive two-year producing deal with Universal Pictures. The studio has now sent out a press release announcing that the duo will take on reboots of The Mummy and Van Helsing with Tom Cruise attached to co-produce and star in the latter. Last month, we reported that Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaihts has been tapped to write the reboot of The Mummy. As for Van Helsing, Cruise has been involved with the property since 2010, but at the time, the product went into stasis after Guillermo Del Toro declined to direct. At the time, Cruise and Del Toro were set to team for At the Mountains of Madness, but Universal pulled the plug because they wouldn't give Del Toro the budget and R-rating he wanted.

Hit the jump for the press release. Orci and Kurtzman were recently hired to write the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man. It's important to note that the successful producing/screenwriting duo are currently not attached to write the scripts for either The Mummy or Van Helsing although they'll obviously have major input.

Here's the press release:
UNIVERSAL CITY, CA, May 1, 2011—Universal Pictures today announced the studio has signed a two-year first-look production deal with one of the leading writing/producing teams in the entertainment industry, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and their K/O Paper Products banner. The duo will kick off their new relationship with Universal by reimagining titles from the studio’s library including Van ...

It’s commonplace nowadays for studios to get a jump on the sequel to big budget properties before the first film hits theaters, and Sony got a very good head start on the follow-up to The Amazing Spider-Man by setting James Vanderbilt to pen the sequel back in March of last year. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is already dated for May of 2014, and now it appears that the studio would like another pass on the script. So who do you get to pen a high priority, big-budget summer movie? Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, of course. Hit the jump for more.

Per Deadline, the screenwriting team of Kurtzman and Orci have been hired to rewrite Vanderbilt’s script for the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man. Vanderbilt, whose past credits include Zodiac and The Rundown, was an inspired choice to pen the Marc Webb-helmed reboot, but I can’t really say the same for Kurtzman and Orci. Their credits include Transformers and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and they also penned Cowboys & Aliens and J.J. Abrams’s Star Trek.

They’re by no means terrible screenwriters, but given the pick of Vanderbilt I was hoping Sony would go for another interesting choice if they wanted another pass on The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Gary Ross penned the script for The Hunger Games and Lionsgate just tapped Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind scribe Charlie Kaufman to adapt a young adult series (seriously), proving that it’s possible to get someone known more for character work than action sequences ...

While I usually hate video game tie-ins, everything I've seen and learned about the upcoming Star Trek video game makes me believe it's something special. Not only does the game look cool, but executive producer and screenwriter Roberto Orci says it will function as canon. Orci says, “It’s going to be a story that fits into our movies, and fits into between the first two movies. We would not allow a game to go out if it was not somehow a part of the continuity." I'm assuming "we" means co-writers Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof, and director J.J. Abrams.

While news about the Star Trek video game has been quiet the past year, last week Paramount Pictures showed off a new trailer at Namco's Gamer's Day and they've now sent it over so everyone can check it out. They've also sent over a few new pieces of concept art. If you're a Star Trek fan and dig video games, after watching the trailer you'll be sold.

For more on what Orci has said about the video game, click here. But here's a choice quote:
"What’s great about the game is that it gets to show that middle step. You get to see Kirk and Spock in a way you’re not going to in the movie. They’re becoming friends; they’re going on adventures you’re not going to see in the movies.
