Weekend Box Office: GRAVITY Hits New October Opening Record with $55.5 Million

by     Posted 350 days ago

gravity-george-clooney-sliceSci-fi has been redeemed this morning. In a year that produced genre disappointments like After Earth and Oblivion, original sci-fi has its first unqualified hit of 2013 with Gravity. The thriller soared to $55.5 million on its first weekend, or about $15 million more than even its most optimistic boosters put the film one week ago. More importantly, Gravity set a new record for October by topping Paranormal Activity 3’s $52.5 million debut.

 Title Weekend Total
1.  Gravity $55,550,000 $55.5
2.  Cloudy with a Chance 2 $21,500,000 $61.5
3.  Runner Runner $7,600,000 $7.6
4.  Prisoners $5,700,000 $47.8
5.  Rush $4,408,000 $18
6.  Don Jon $4,160,000 $16
7.  Baggage Claim $4,125,000 $15.1
8.  Insidious Chapter 2 $3,876,000 $74.7
9.  Pulling Strings $2,500,000 $2.5
10.  Enough Said $2,150,000 $5.13

Friday Box Office: GRAVITY Launches with Big $17.5 Million; RUNNER RUNNER Off To a Slow Start

by     Posted 351 days ago

gravity-sandra-bullock-sliceAfter what has proved a disappointing year for the sci-fi genre, Gravity is on pace for a surprisingly robust debut. The Warner Bros. thriller earned an estimated $17.5 million from 3,575 locations on Friday (including $1.4 million from Thursday late-night screenings) and is now targeting a three-day total of $48 million or higher. Initial projections for director Alfonso Cuaron’s feature were closer to $35 million, but with stellar reviews (98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and a heavy presence in 3D and IMAX venues, it’s easy to see why the film’s prospects improved so dramatically. At this point, both George Clooney and Sandra Bullock are looking at new career-high openings with Gravity, and the film itself is poised to become one of October’s highest debuts of all-time.

The weekend forecast was not so sanguine for Runner Runner.  Fox’s R-rated thriller earned an estimated $2.75 million from 3,026 locations on Friday and is expected to fall short of $8 million this weekend.  We’ll have complete details and the top ten tomorrow.

 Title Friday Total
1.  Gravity $17,525,000 $17.5
2.  Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 $4,700,000 $43.7
3.  Runner Runner $2,750,000 $2.7
4.  Prisoners $1,730,000 $43.9
5.  Rush $1,400,000 $15.1

Director Brad Furman Talks Shooting on Film, Casting Timberlake and Affleck, Reflecting on His Previous Films, and More on the Set of RUNNER, RUNNER

by     Posted 354 days ago

On a hot and humid evening last August, I spent the night on the San Juan, Puerto Rico set of director Brad Furman‘s (The Lincoln Lawyer) crime thriller Runner, Runner.  The film stars Justin Timberlake as a Princeton student who is cheated out of his tuition money playing online poker and ends up traveling to Costa Rica to confront the on-line mastermind (Ben Affleck).   The film also stars Gemma Arterton, Ben Schwartz, Dayo Okeniyi and Oliver Cooper and it was written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien (Rounders).  For more on the film, watch the trailer.

During a break in filming, I got to participate in a group interview with Brad Furman.  He talked about casting Affleck and Timberlake, what he knows about offshore gambling, how The Lincoln Lawyer opened up new doors in his career, filming in Puerto Rico, and a lot more.  Hit the jump for the interview.  Runner, Runner opens October 4th.

Los Angeles Readers: Win Passes to RUNNER RUNNER

I don’t know if it’s too early to have a throwback to ten years ago, but there is a little nostalgia coloring Runner Runner, or at least that’s my read on the plot.  The film stars Justin Timberlake as a Princeton student who is cheated out of his tuition money playing online poker and ends up traveling to Costa Rica to confront the on-line mastermind (Ben Affleck).  I’m pretty sure online poker is now illegal in the U.S., but like I said: throwback.  I’m not exactly sure what to think of the film from the trailers, but I have faith in screenwriters Brian Koppelman and David Levien, the guys who wrote Rounders.

I’m pleased to announce we’re giving away 50 passes to a Los Angeles screening of Runner Runner.  Hit the jump to find out how you can see the movie early and for free.  Runner Runner opens October 4th.

New Trailer for RUNNER RUNNER Starring Justin Timerblake, Gemma Arterton, and Ben Affleck

A new trailer has been released for Runner Runner, and I can’t decide what the funniest thing about it is.  Is it that the plot—Justin Timberlake playing a guy who falls in with bad people after being swindled in online poker—seems like it should be a movie from the mid-2000s?  Or is it that the movie harkens back to the days when Ben Affleck made bad career choices?  If there’s a sliver of hope for this movie, it’s that director Brad Furman and screenwriters Brian Koppelman & David Levien have good movies in their filmographies (The Lincoln Lawyer and Rounders, respectively).  Runner Runner has a slight chance of being the pleasant surprise of fall 2013 instead of the forgettable flop of 2004.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Gemma Arterton Anthony Mackie, David Costabile, Ben Schwartz, and Oliver Cooper,.  Runner Runner opens October 4th.

Ben Affleck Plays a Billionaire with a Boat … in this First Clip from RUNNER RUNNER

While you likely have an opinion on Ben Affleck being tapped to play Bruce Wayne/Batman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel sequel, you may have overlooked his participation in Brad Furman’s upcoming gambling thriller, Runner Runner.  He looks comfortable playing a billionaire on his yacht in this first clip, which features Affleck and Justin Timberlake dabbling in a financial planning conversation of sorts.  This relatively early scene sets up the relationship between Affleck’s entrepreneur and Timberlake’s poor college student that likely intensifies throughout the picture.  Check out Steve’s interview with Timberlake here for more on Runner Runner.

Also starring Gemma Arterton, Anthony Mackie, David Costabile, Ben Schwartz and Oliver Cooper, Runner Runner opens October 4th.  Hit the jump to watch the first clip.

First Trailer for RUNNER, RUNNER Starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake

by     Posted 1 year, 107 days ago

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for director Brad Furman‘s (The Lincoln Lawyer) crime thriller Runner, Runner.  The film stars Justin Timberlake as a Princeton student who is cheated out of his tuition money playing online poker and ends up indebted to the site’s corrupt boss (Ben Affleck).  Furman’s The Lincoln Lawyer turned out to be a pleasantly surprising dramatic thriller, and Runner, Runner appears to quite similar to that pic in tone.  No one looks to be gunning for Oscar glory here, but the interplay between Affleck and Timberlake is promising and it’s fun to see Affleck taking on a more villainous role.  Moreover, the Puerto Rico locale provides a nice change of pace from the gritty, metropolis-set thrillers that populate the marketplace nowadays.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Gemma Arterton, Ben Schwartz, Dayo Okeniyi and Oliver Cooper.  Runner, Runner opens September 27th.

New promo posters have appeared for the gambling drama Runner Runner, the animated film Epic, and Ben Stiller‘s remake of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.  Since they’re promo posters, they’re nothing more than an announcement, which is why the designer didn’t do more than simply write down the title and put it over a bland background.  There’s also a new international poster for Skyfall, which is like the recent posters except Bond is actually doing something.

Hit the jump to check out the posters.  Runner Runner opens September 27, 2013.  Epic opens May 24, 2013.  The Secret Life of Walter Mitty opens December 25, 2013.  Skyfall opens November 9th.
