With her latest film Carrie arriving in theaters shortly, Chloe Grace Moretz is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.  The Wrap reports that the actress has signed on to star in the adaptation of the Sam Munson novel November Criminals, which Sacha Gervasi (Anvil! The Story of Anvil) has rewritten and will direct.  The story takes place in Washington D.C. and revolves around a rebellious teenager who takes it upon himself to lead the investigation into the murder of a classmate.  Moretz will play the female lead role of Phoebe, and Gervasi is currently in the process of casting the male lead.

Steven Knight (Eastern Promises) wrote the script, and November Criminals will mark Gervasi’s second narrative feature film as a director after last year’s Hitchcock.  Moretz recently wrapped a role in Lynn Shelton’s Laggies and another opposite Denzel Washington in The Equalizer.  The actress is currently filming Dark Places with Charlize Theron.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of November Criminals.

With awards season in full swing, and Hitchcock having just received a nomination for Best Actress (Helen Mirren) for the Golden Globe Awards, Collider was invited to chat with director Sacha Gervasi recently.  During the interview about the film and its exploration of the little known romantic and creative relationship between Alfred Hitchcock (Anthony Hopkins) and his wife, Alma Reville (Mirren), the filmmaker talked about intentionally keeping a level of fantasy to the story, the unexpected decision to focus on Alma’s creative contribution to Hitchcock’s career more than the man himself, his first exposure to the films of Hitchcock, how the test screening process affected the finished product, and the handful of deleted scenes that he can put on the DVD.  He also talked about his next film, My Dinner with Hervé, based on when he interviewed Hervé Villechaize (with Peter Dinklage set to play the French actor) in the final days before his suicide.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

HITCHCOCK Review

When Alfred Hitchcock made Psycho, he built a foundation for the movie—woman steals money and tries to get away—before kicking the legs out from under it to leads us into an entirely new and exciting picture.  Sacha Gervasi‘s Hitchcock sets up no such foundation as it leaps into the marital difficulties between the Master of Suspense and his wife/partner, Alma Reville.  We’re led into a relationship already at the brink, and in an attempt to humanize a legend like Hitchcock, he comes off as small and a bit cartoonish.  We see his quirks and his insecurities, but rarely taken to a thoughtful or dangerous place.  Despite the strong performances, especially from the always-reliable Helen Mirren, Hitchcock pushes us away from the eponymous filmmaker and into a sad, predictable marriage spat.

The first trailer and a new poster for director Sacha Gervasi’s Hitchcock have been released.  The film looks absolutely fascinating, with killer performances from stars Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren as the legendary director and his wife.  The story chronicles the troubled production of Psycho, but there’s a great deal of humor sprinkled throughout this trailer to balance the more dramatic material.  The chemistry between Hopkins and Mirren is palpable, and the makeup work on Hopkins is simply stunning.  Though the fall movie season is already packed with some fantastically promising films, this swell first trailer has rocketed Hitchcock towards the top of my most anticipated list.

When director Sacha Gervasi’s drama Hitchcock entered production this year, most assumed that we wouldn’t see the pic until next awards season.  However, after getting a look at the finished film, Fox Searchlight just recently decided to throw the Anthony Hopkins-fronted pic into this year’s awards race with a November release date.  Now the American Film Institute has announced that Hitchcock has been selected as the AFI Fest’s opening night film, where it will make its world premiere.  The film takes place during the troubled production of legendary filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and centers on the relationship between Hitchcock and his wife Alma Reville (Helen Mirren).

The stacked cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, James D’Arcy, Toni Collette and Michael Stuhlbarg, so I’m eager to hear first impressions of the film from the festival.  AFI has also chosen Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln as the festival’s closing night film, so AFI Fest is shaping up to be one hell of an event.  Expect the first reactions to Hitchcock on November 1st, when it premieres at the festival.  The film hits theaters on November 23rd.  Hit the jump to read the full press release.

Sacha Gervasi‘s Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho has picked up a new title, and begun principal photography.  The film will now simply be entitled “Hitchock“, which is probably better since the previous title sounds more fitting for a documentary.  Hitchcock is being billed as a love story between the legendary director (played by Anthony Hopkings) and his wife and partner Alma Reville (Helen Mirren).  The movie also stars Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, Toni Collette, Danny Huston, Michael Stuhlbarg, Kurtwood Smith, Wallace Langham, Richard Portnow, and Michael Wincott.

Two more actors have been added to the growing cast of Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of PsychoAnthony Hopkins stars as the legendary director in this story of the troubled road to getting the seminal horror film made, and now Kurtwood Smith (That 70’s Show) and Wallace Langham (CSI) have joined the cast in two real-life roles.  THR reports that Smith will play Geoffrey Shurlock, administrator of the Motion Picture Production Code, which was the precursor to the MPAA.  Variety reports that Langham is set as Saul Bass, the renowned graphic designer who created the main titles for Psycho and many of Hitchcock’s following films.

Hitchcock ran up against fierce opposition from the Production Code on Psycho over such controversial aspects of the film as an unmarried couple sharing the same bed, the flushing of a toilet on camera, and a brief glimpse of bare buttocks (the horror!). Sacha Gervasi is onboard to direct the real-life story, with Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, Toni Collette, and many more rounding out the stellar ensemble cast.
