THE KEEPING ROOM Review | TIFF 2014

the-keeping-room-review

Daniel Barber’s The Keeping Room begins with a quote from Union General William Tecumseh Sherman: “War is cruelty, there is no use trying to reform it; the crueler it is, the sooner it will be over.”  The Keeping Room takes place during war, but it is not about war, at least not in the traditional sense of soldiers on a battlefield.  It is more about cruelty; specifically, the cruelty visited upon women.  The threat of rape pervades the entire story, and Barber maintains the tension without ever feeling exploitative.  Although the dialogue can be a little too on the nose, the weight of the narrative and Brit Marling’s powerful performance make the dread palatable throughout this painfully relevant tale.

SABOTAGE Review

sabotage-review

I have no problem with machismo in movies.  Machismo can be a lot of fun.  Arnold Schwarzenegger is machismo personified.  He’s macho to the point where he becomes an easy caricature.  He’s the violent badass we can all enjoy guilt-free.  But not everyone can handle that attitude, and as his co-stars demonstrate in David Ayer‘s Sabotage, the line between machismo and outright misogyny is a thin one.  The movie puts a lot of effort into its action and professional tactics, but the supporting characters aren’t just an afterthought.  They’re completely misguided weapons who earn our disdain rather than our sympathy.

New Red-Band Trailer for SABOTAGE Gets Personal

The recent footage for David Ayer’s Sabotage has certainly shown off the bloody violence prevalent in the R-rated actioner, but this new red-band trailer surprisingly shows us the reason that audiences should become invested in the film’s characters.  This new cut goes beyond the violent action and compelling mystery that are central to the plot in order to show the heart behind Arnold Schwazenegger’s character’s journey.  Though he fronts a DEA task force combating a ruthless drug cartel, the danger sets in on him from both sides as the criminals kidnap his family and his partners start disappearing one by one.

A new international trailer for director David Ayer’s (writer of Training Day/director of End of Watch) Sabotage has just been released.  Based on Agatha Christie’s classic mystery novel And Then There Were None, the film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and centers on a DEA task force who heists a drug cartel safe house, only to start getting picked off one-by-one by an unknown assassin.  While I was already excited for the project due to Ayer directing, all the footage I’ve seen makes the film look even better than I expected.  It’s also a lot bloodier than anything Schwarzenegger has done in many years.  It’s a great surprise.

We’ve got a couple of casting announcements to attend to this afternoon.  First up, Idris Elba and Sam Worthington have boarded the dramatic thriller Alive Alone as Matthias Schoenaerts has dropped out of the picture.  Elba will play an ex-detainee of Guantanamo Bay working as a taxi driver whose world collides with a prostitute (Noomi Rapace) on the run from a feared crime boss (Worthington).  The story takes place in New York City and Khurram Longi is making his directorial debut on the feature, which he also wrote.  Per Deadline, production is looking to get underway next month.

Additionally, Deadline reports that John Travolta will lead the voice cast of the insane-sounding independent animated feature Gummy Bear.  The 2D/3D animated pic “sees Gummy and his friends—a vegetarian vampire bat, a cat, and a chameleon—fighting to save an alien planet from destruction.”  A director is not yet attached and Stealth Media Group is aiming to start production on the $30 million pic this September.  That premise is certainly something.

Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana Officially Set for AVATAR 2, 3, and 4

Though there wasn’t really any concern about them not coming back, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana have now officially solidified their deals to star in all three of the upcoming Avatar sequels.  Heat Vision confirms that Worthington and Saldana will be reprising their roles as Jake Sully and Neytiri, and while plot details for this trio of films are under wraps, the report notes that Sully and Neytiri will have children.  The first actor to sign on for all three films was Stephen Lang, and the announcement of his casting took away any stakes we had with regards to his character surviving or dying in the next two movies.

Director James Cameron is co-writing Avatar 2, 3, and 4 with Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver, and Shane Salerno, respectively.  We know that filming will take place entirely in New Zealand, and Cameron plans on shooting all three pics at once when production gets underway later this year.  Avatar 2 is finally slated for release December 2016, with the other two films following in December 2017 and 2018.

Open Road Films has released the first trailer for director David Ayer‘s (End of Watch) new film Sabotage.  Previously referred to as Ten, the film is loosely based on Agatha Christie’s classic mystery Ten Little Indians, as it centers on a DEA task force who heists a drug cartel safe house, only to start getting picked off one-by-one by an unknown assassin.  The film actually looks pretty great, as the fantastic ensemble makes for an excitingly hardened team led by Arnold Schwarzenegger, who actually feels like a natural fit for the role of the group’s boss/father figure.  Intriguing story, talented director, varied and charming ensemble—Sabotage is looking mighty promising.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film stars Joe Manganiello, Sam Worthington, Harold Perrineau, Terrence Howard, Max Martini, Josh Holloway, Olivia Williams, and Mireille Enos.  Sabotage opens on April 11, 2014.

David Ayer‘s action film Sabotage has been quiet for some time now.  It used to be called “Ten“, and is loosely based on Agatha Christie’s classic mystery Ten Little Indians, as it centers on a DEA task force who heists a drug cartel safe house, only to start getting picked off one-by-one by an unknown assassin.  The movie stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, and now the first images since one was released almost a year ago.  The images feature plenty of firearms as well as potentially distracting hairstyles from Schwarzenegger (who is supposed to have a bad haircut so it would look “real”, according to USA Today) and co-star Sam Worthington, who’s sporting cornrows and going by the name “Monster” [Correction: Joe Manganiello has the cornrows.  They are not at all distracting on him].  The USA Today article also emphasizes the amount of training the stars had to go through in order to bond and cut down on takes for the action scenes.

Director James Cameron has been promising follow-ups to his 2009 film Avatar since shortly after the first pic entered theaters and started breaking box office records.  In true Cameron fashion, the filmmaker has taken his time in crafting the sequels.  We finally got a (hopefully) firm timetable earlier this year, when 20th Century Fox announced that the Avatar trilogy had been expanded to three sequels, with Avatar 2 opening in theaters December 2016.  Now Sam Worthington has provided yet another update on when filming might begin, offering a few other details in the process.  Hit the jump for more.
