Last night I turned to Xbox Live to check out Shane Carruth's Upstream Color for the first time. While not quite as impenetrable after one viewing as its predecessor, 2004's Primer, Upstream still demands the utmost attention of its viewers in exchange for the slightest hint of clarity. The dialogue is sparse, the setting is ever-changing, the editing is heavily dependent on juxtaposition as a way of creating meaning, and the sound design/foley work is turned up to "11" at times. Whereas Primer played more to the intellect behind making time travel a reality, Upstream is an extremely visceral experience that is more interested, or at least more successful, in eliciting an emotional response than explaining how a rare organism can be harvested, used as a method of mind control, and ultimately link humans to pigs. The exact degree to which it succeeds will vary from viewer to viewer but it's ultimately an experience I recommend taking in.
Of course a movie like Upstream lends itself to more than a few lines of my humble analysis, but that's not actually why we're here. In this week's Top 5 you can check out the first trailer and poster for Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity, a generous number of set pics from director Jonathan Liebesman's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, Steve's exclusive phone interview with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, the first trailer for Ender's Game, and a look at Iron Man by the Numbers. A brief recap and link to each will greet you after ...

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for director Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity and it looks incredible. The story centers on an astronaut (Sandra Bullock) who is stranded alone in space following a catastrophic event aboard a spacecraft. George Clooney also stars, but Bullock is rumored to spend the majority of the screentime in the film utterly alone. The pic was originally slated to open last year, but was subsequently pushed back so that more time could be spent on the visual effects. Based on the trailer, the time was well spent. Gravity looks like it could be one of the year's best films.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. Gravity opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D October 4th.

Check out the first full trailer for Cuaron's Gravity below:

Here’s the synopsis for Gravity:
Sandra Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone–tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

The first poster for one of the most anticipated films of the year has arrive. We got our first incredibly brief look at footage from director Alfonso Cuaron’s long-awaited sci-fi film Gravity last night ahead of the trailer debut on Thursday, and this first poster does a magnificent job of teasing the vast and dangerous nature of space in the film. With a master like Curaron at the helm, this is sure to be unlike anything we’ve seen before.

Hit the jump to take a look at the poster, and check back here tomorrow to watch the first trailer. Gravity opens on October 4th in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D.

Want a little tease of footage from children of Men-director Alfonso Cuaron’s highly anticipated upcoming sci-fi drama, Gravity? Well, you got it! The visual effects-heavy 3D film stars Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) as an astronaut stranded alone in space following a catastrophic event onboard a spacecraft. George Clooney (Ocean's Eleven), as glimpsed in this teaser, has a supporting role. Further details are under wraps, but the film is said to have an unbroken 17-minute opening shot and will feature plenty of mind-bending effects. Warner Bros. recently announced that the film will open on October 4th of this year. Hit the jump to check out a brief bit of footage and be sure to return on Thursday when the first trailer hits.

Here's a brief little snippet (and a modified Wilhelm scream?) from Cuaron's Gravity:

A few days ago at CinemaCon, Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy showed some footage from director Paul Feig’s (Bridesmaids) upcoming buddy cop comedy The Heat. The film is a standard buddy-cop formula where a straight-laced cop (Bullock) is teamed up with a shoot-from-the-hip partner (McCarthy), and they learn to overcome their differences and become BFFs on their mission to bring down the bad guys. The plot is secondary to the chemistry, and judging by the trailer, Bullock and McCarthy look like they’re going to be a great comic duo.

Shortly after they took the stage, I participated in a small press conference with Bullock and McCarthy. They talked about improv versus sticking to the script, the impact of Bridesmaids on female-driven comedies, funny moments on set, filming in Boston, the stunts, working with Paul Feig, Bullock's improv skills, and a lot more. Hit the jump to either listen to or read what they had to say.

Click here to listen to the audio of this interview. Otherwise the full transcript is below.

Question: I have a question for you both regarding the interaction of your characters in the film. How many of the things that we see in the movie were actually written in the script, and how many were created in the spur of the moment? I’m asking you this because I would like to know ultimately if you think comedy should be like a living thing, like something organic.

SANDRA BULLOCK: That’s a great question.

MELISSA MCCARTHY: That is a good question. I ...

Sequels are already in the works for two upcoming cop comedies. Buzz is strong for Bridesmaids director Paul Feig’s buddy cop comedy The Heat, and Deadline reports that screenwriter Katie Dippold has been tapped to start working on the script for a follow-up months before the first film even opens. The pic stars Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy as a by-the-books FBI agent and a rough-around-the-edges local Boston cop, respectively, who team up to take down a drug lord. The film’s red-band trailer promises plenty of laughs and great chemistry between Bullock and McCarthy, and the pic's June 28th release date shows big confidence from 20th Century Fox. Hit the jump for news of a sequel to Ride Along.

Additionally, Universal is moving forward on a follow-up to the Tim Story-directed Ride Along. That film stars Kevin Hart as a fast-talking aspiring police officer who must team up with his girlfriend’s brother, a hot-tempered cop (Ice Cube), to prove that he’s worthy of being her husband. The pic isn’t slated for release until next January, but the studio is making a deal with scribes Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi to pen a follow-up that could go into production a few months after the first film opens.

Obviously the sequels to The Heat and Ride Along are contingent upon the first films striking a chord with audiences at the box office, but Universal appears to be happy with what they’re seeing by way of early footage and test screenings and it's not hard to ...

Here’s the official synopsis for The Heat:
Uptight and straight-laced, FBI Special Agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) is a methodical investigator with a reputation for excellence–and hyper-arrogance. Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy), one of Boston P.D.’s “finest,” is foul-mouthed and has a very short fuse, and uses her gut instinct and street smarts to catch the most elusive criminals. Neither has ever had a partner, or a friend for that matter. When these two wildly incompatible law officers join forces to bring down a ruthless drug lord, they become the last thing anyone expected: buddies. From Paul Feig, the director of “Bridesmaids.”

A new clip and poster for director Paul Feig’s (Bridesmaids) upcoming buddy cop comedy The Heat have been released online. The film stars Sandra Bullock as an FBI agent who teams up with a local Boston cop (Melissa McCarthy) in order to bring down a drug lord. The previous trailers and clips have teased some excellent chemistry between Bullock and McCarthy, and this latest clip is no different. We see an alternate take on the good cop/bad cop routine with a nice cameo by Michael McDonald and an excellent punch line.

Hit the jump to watch the clip and to check out the pic’s poster. The film also stars Katilin Olson, Demian Bichir, Tony Hale, Taran Killam and Michael Rapaport. The Heat opens on June 28th.

Universal has released the first clip from Paul Feig's new comedy, The Heat. The film is a standard buddy-cop formula where a straight-laced cop (Sandra Bullock) is teamed up with a shoot-from-the-hip partner (Melissa McCarthy), and they learn to overcome their differences and become BFFs on their mission to bring down the bad guys. The plot is secondary to the chemistry, and judging by the trailer, Bullock and McCarthy look like they're going to be a great comic duo. Most of the new clip is material that's already been in the trailer, so there's no need to worry about spoilers.

Hit the jump to check out the clip. The Heat opens June 28th.

Last year, we reported that Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment were developing a Despicable Me spinoff for the lovable minions. The spinoff, appropriately titled "Minions", now has a voice for its lead villain. According to Deadline, Sandra Bullock will provide the voice of "Scarlet Overkill, a stylish bad-ass super-villain who is (what else?), bent on world domination." The story shows the minions have been around forever, and unintentionally thwarted and destroyed their masters' plans through adorable incompetence. Set in the 1960s, Minions has three of the creatures going to a villain convention to find a new master, and compete to get the job from Overkill, who aspires to be the world's first female supervillain. It sounds like a fun role for Bullock, and I'm eager to see what she does with it.

Minions is due out in 3D on December 19, 2014. The minions will next be seen in Despicable Me 2, which arrives in 3D on July 3rd. Bullock will next be seen in Paul Feig's R-rated action-comedy The Heat, which opens June 28th.

A new international trailer for director Paul Feig’s (Bridesmaids) new comedy The Heat has landed online. The film stars Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) as an FBI agent who teams up with a local Boston cop (Melissa McCarthy) in order to bring down a drug lord. There’s not a ton of new footage, but this trailer is worth the watch if only to hear the movie voice over guy say the word “tight ass.” Bullock and McCarthy look to have absolutely excellent chemistry, and Feig’s involvement promises the comedy will likely be supported by a sufficient dose of heart.

Hit the jump to watch the new trailer. The film also stars Katilin Olson, Demian Bichir, Tony Hale, Taran Killam and Michael Rapaport. The Heat opens on April 5, 2013.

Finally! After being pulled from the 2012 schedule altogether last summer and moved to an unspecified 2013 date, Warner Bros. has at last announced a firm release date for director Alfonso Cuaron’s highly anticipated upcoming sci-fi drama Gravity. The visual effects-heavy 3D film stars Sandra Bullock as an astronaut stranded alone in space following a catastrophic event onboard a spacecraft. Further details are under wraps, but the film is said to have an unbroken 17-minute opening shot, plenty of mind-bending effects, and a supporting turn from George Clooney.

On the crowded October date, the film will face off against the Vince Vaughn comedy The Delivery Man, the Liam Hemsworth/Gary Oldman thriller Paranoia, the 3D re-release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, and the sequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Here’s hoping we see a trailer soon. Hit the jump to read a synopsis for the film.

But the only way ...

A new red-band trailer for Paul Feig's buddy cop comedy The Heat has gone online. The film stars Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) as an FBI agent who teams up with a local Boston cop (Bridesmaids' Melissa McCarthy) in order to bring down a drug lord. While the trailer does seem to show off perhaps a bit too much in the way of plot, it's the humor that matters here. The red-band trailer is easily the funniest bit of marketing from The Heat so far. Also starring Katilin Olson, Demian Bichir, Tony Hale, Taran Killam and Michael Rapaport, The Heat opens on April 5, 2013. Hit the jump to watch the red-band trailer.

The first trailer for Bridesmaids director Paul Feig’s comedy The Heat has been released. The film stars Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy as an uptight FBI agent and a foul-mouthed Boston police officer, respectively, who must team up to take down a drug lord. The "mismatched partners" buddy cop premise may seem a tad stale, but this trailer proves that the comedic talents of Bullock and McCarthy (not to mention Feige) are enough to turn the basic logline into a really fun ride. The two appear to have some excellent chemistry, and it's especially neat to see one Thomas F. Wilson (ie. Biff Tannen from Back to the Future) back on the big screen.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Demian Bichir, Tony Hale, Taran Killam, and Michael Rapaport. The Heat opens on April 5, 2013.

Disney’s Lone Ranger starring Johnny Depp has been moved from May 31st to July 3rd, 2013.
Marvel’s Thor 2 is shifting slightly from November 15th to November 8th.
The sequel Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters has been pushed back to August 16th from March 15th, 2013.

Hit the jump for more on each of the aforementioned films.

Hot on the heels of Fox’s announcement that Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse will now open in 2014 as opposed to July 3rd, 2013, Disney has swooped in and grabbed the holiday weekend for director Gore Verbinski’s big screen iteration of The Lone Ranger. Armie Hammer stars as the titular hero, with Depp taking on the legendary sidekick in grand fashion. The film will now be up against Independence Day 3D and Despicable Me 2.

Additionally, Thor 2 has been moved up one week to November 8th. The film faced no competition as of yet on the November 15th weekend, but Lionsgate’s sure-to-be-massive sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens on the 22nd ...

Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy have signed on to star in a buddy cop movie that Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) will direct. The script by Katie Dippold (Parks and Recreation) centers on "the strained working relationship between a high-strung FBI agent (Bullock) and an unconventional Boston cop (McCarthy) who team up to take down a Russian gangster." The logline is nothing special, but the talent attached is. According to Variety, the Fox production is expected to shoot during McCarthy's next hiatus from her sitcom, Mike & Molly. Hit the jump for the rundown on the rest of their upcoming projects.

McCarthy is spending the current summer hiatus on the set of Identity Thief with Jason Bateman. That speaks to how busy McCarthy has become following her Bridesmaids Oscar nomination and her Mike & Molly Emmy win. She also has a role in Judd Apatow's This Is 40 and the road trip comedy Tammy in the works. Not to mention at least one more project with Feig: an "unconventional love story" with Jon Hamm and something titled Dumb Jock, which may be the same project.

Feig has likewise made good use of the Bridesmaids acclaim. In addition to the McCarthy teamups, Feig lined up The Better Woman and a change-of-pace drama, Untouchable. As with any comedy that grosses nearly $300 million worldwide, there will always be talk of a sequel to Bridesmaids, but don't hold your breath.

Bullock has actually scaled back since her own Oscar win with just a ...

Movies like Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close are difficult to review. On the one hand, part of me wants to rip Stephen Daldry’s film to shreds and call it a manipulative, corny, over-the-top, Oscar-seeking mess. But the other part of me wants to drop the cynicism and enjoy the heartfelt emotional journey for what it aspires to be: a film that attempts to cope with the aftershocks of 9/11, and mourn those we lost in the fire.

Watching Extremely Loud on Blu-ray over the weekend, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. While not exactly the masterpiece it thinks it is, Daldry’s film at least sidesteps the problems I had with the director’s previous efforts, especially the overtly saccharine The Reader and the morbid, depressing The Hours – both of which tried to do too much and therefore lacked focus. Hit the jump for my review.

The consensus for Extremely Loud lingered in the mixed-to-negative zone upon its release. As such I skipped out on the film during its very brief theatrical run despite the presence of stars Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock and Viola Davis. The film went on to receive two Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor (Max von Sydow) and, oddly enough, Best Picture of the Year (for which it received a lot of flak, particularly since most felt that other films, namely Drive and Shame, delivered a more satisfying product).

In effect, while all of Daldry’s films carry enough emotional heft and weepy sentiment ...

Alfonso Cuaron's upcoming sci-fi film Gravity has already made some bold moves. The film reportedly has little dialogue, long takes, and now Sandra Bullock says the actors won't be wearing make-up. That may not seem like a big deal, but imagine your face blown up to the size of a movie screen and then projected in 3D. Of course, it's not a totally bizarre choice since the movie takes place in outer space and centers on an astronaut (Bullock) who's struggling to find a way home after her space station is damaged. Putting on eye-shadow and lipstick probably isn't "Priority #1" in that situation.

Hit the jump for what Bullock had to say about filming as well as her elaboration on why co-star George Clooney doesn't plan on doing another 3D movie after this one. Gravity opens November 21st.

Here's what Bullock told USA Today:
God help us all when my face comes rushing at you with no makeup on. I'm going to apologize now, but Alfonso, in a brilliant move, said, 'No makeup.'"
Keep in mind that make-up isn't done simply to make us all feel ugly when compared to movie stars. It also has to be done with the cinematography in mind and trying to set the proper tone. For example, if you're making a romantic comedy, it's probably not a good idea to have everyone look like death warmed over. But clearly Cuaron liked what he saw from test shooting, and when you make movies like Y Tu Mama Tambien and ...

Warner Bros. has released five clips from Stephen Daldry's adaptation of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. I found the film surprisingly moving and well-made, but I recognize that it's one of the most divisive flicks this year. The people who hate the movie really hate it and I can understand where they're coming from. The characters' odd affectations will either push you out of the story to where you're no longer willing to come back or they'll intrigue you until the film has your full attention till the final frame. Watching individual clips isn't the best way to sell the flick since the scenes work better in context, which is why the trailers are so terrible. But if you're itching to see more footage from the flick, we've got your covered.

Hit the jump to check out the clips. The film stars Thomas Horn, Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, and Max Von Sydow. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is currently playing in limited release. It opens in wide release on January 20, 2012.

Here's the official synopsis for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close:
Based on the acclaimed novel of the same name, "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" tells the story of one young boy's journey from heartbreaking loss to the healing power of self-discovery, set against the backdrop of the tragicevents of September 11. Eleven-year-old Oskar Schell is an exceptional child: amateur inventor, Francophile, pacifist. And after finding a mysterious key that belonged to his father, who ...

September 11th, like any tragedy, can be easily exploited. It can be exploited for profit, for political gain, and for an easy strike at your emotional soft spots. But it can also be handled in a mature, thoughtful manner like Paul Greengrass' United 93. It's been over ten years since 9/11 and we must start accepting that the event can be used in a story that's not directly about 9/11. That's an incredibly tricky proposition because of the easy route to exploiting our national tragedy, and that's where Stephen Daldry's adaptation of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close seems to be going at its outset. Daldry has to scale a mountain of negative expectations as we struggle to see how 9/11 could be absolutely essential to the story. We must also contend with a painfully affected character played by a child actor gives a off-putting, robotic performance. But Daldry's brilliant direction ultimately brings the 9/11 plot point and the bizarre lead performance together to create an emotional finale.

Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn) is a painfully precocious child. His oddball behavior was encouraged by his father Thomas (Tom Hanks) who sent his son on adventures across New York City to find certain objects and learn about the city's "secret history". Thomas dies in the attack on the World Trade Center, but Oskar is desperate to keep the memory of his father alive. One year after 9/11, Oskar finds a key in a tiny envelope in his dad's closet with the name "Black" written ...
