Just last night, writer-director Edgar Wright participated in a pair of Q&As at screenings of Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World as part of Entertainment Weekly’s ongoing CapeTown Film Fest.  In addition to providing fans some behind-the-scenes trivia on both films, Wright also debuted the UK trailer for his conclusion to the Three Flavours Cornetto / Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy, The World’s End.  While Wright asked the audience not to reveal too much about it before it’s released next week, I can say that it certainly looks to be in line with the previous two films and is intended to tie the entire trilogy together.  As for what else Wright had to say, hit the jump.

Like any studio, Universal has had a tough time with movies they expected to be hits.  The Fast and Furious series is one of their killer franchises and they landed a sleeper hit with Bridesmaids, but the studio had to suck up bombs like Land of the Lost, The Wolfman, Robin Hood, Cowboys & Aliens, and even the geek-beloved Scott Pilgrim vs. The WorldRon Meyer, Universal’s President and COO for the past sixteen years, spoke about the studio’s flops at the Savannah Film Festival.  He also talked about 3D, avoiding prestige pictures, and their controversial move to try and rush Tower Heist onto VOD.

If you want to see Scott Pilgrim vs. The World on the big screen again and again again (and again…and again), then Los Angeles’ New Beverly Cinema has got you covered.  On their Twitter feed, @newbeverly [via Movieline] announced that the film now has “monthly midnight residency”.  What that means is that starting Friday, September 23rd, Edgar Wright’s terrific film will screen at midnight once a month at the renowned theater.  Other films that have monthly residency are director/New Beverly owner Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs.  For folks who are planning to attend the Scott Pilgrim screenings, costumes are encouraged.  The film deserves a dedicated following so keep making those monthly screenings, L.A. people.

I have to give Edgar Wright credit for consistently giving audiences movie marathons.  Whether he’s showcasing his own movies or programming at the New Beverly, if you’re going to an event hosted by Wright, odds are you’re seeing more than one movie that night.  On August 26th, Wright will be hosting a triple-bill of his films Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (“plus numerous odds and ends from his oeuvre e.g. the Grindhouse trailer ‘Don’t'”) at San Francisco’s Castro Theater.  Wright will be on hand to introduce each film and do a Q&A and tickets only cost $15.  That’s a steal.  If for some reason you need more convincing, you can buy a limited edition poster that artist Alex Pardee drew up for the event.  Pardee will sell any remaining posters at his website, Zerofriends.

The lush visuals and hyperkinetic editing of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World are truly inimitable.  But Kial Natale and Dylan Innes gave mimicry their best shot with a minute-long video titled Scott Pilgrim VS 60 Seconds for the Virgin Radio Fake Film Festival contest.  The results are impressive.  All you really need to know is that it earned the approval of director Edgar Wright himself: “Rating: Awesome.”  Watch it after the break.

Oscar Visual Effects Shortlist Includes INCEPTION, SCOTT PILGRIM, TRON: LEGACY and Four More

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has narrowed down the contenders for the Visual Effects category to seven: Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, Hereafter, Inception, Iron Man 2, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and Tron: Legacy.  Given the face replace magic and impending Oscar dominance of The Social Network, I’m a bit surprised David Fincher’s movie didn’t get a nod.  But I’m glad Scott Pilgrim has the chance represent the relatively smaller-scale films in a big-budget category.  (Basically Scott must battle six evil FXes to win the heart of Oscar.)

The voting members will be invited to view 15-minute segments from each film on January 20th, then vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.  Hit the jump for the press release.

Artist Lloyd Stas has drawn up an awesome set of posters based on the work of Edgar Wright.  Not only did Stas make posters for Wright’s feature films Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, but also for his terrific TV series Spaced and his fake trailer Don’t that was part of Grindhouse.  You need to get a look at these posters and Stas needs to start selling these bad boys.

Top 10 Films of 2010

top-10-films-2010-slice

I won’t deny the vanity of year-end lists.  Most professional critics will sit through over 100 new films per year and the year-end list is a badge of honor that says, “These are the films I appreciated the most.  Behold.”  Despite the vanity, I continue to think that the year-end Top 10 provides a valuable service to the average moviegoer.  Most folks don’t have the time, cash, or inclination to see every movie released in a given year and a Top 10 list says, “Here are the must-see films from the past 365 days.  Netflix them or something.”  I didn’t get to see every film that could have potentially made this list, but I feel confident in my choices.  So forgive my indulgence and hit the jump for my Top 10 films of 2010.

Best Performances, Directors, and Other Miscellany of 2010

In my profession, there are two very important things you must do: watch movies and keep notes.  I did an alright job with the first one, but admittedly fell short on the latter.  While last year I was able to confidently provide what I thought were the best kills and quotes, this year I didn’t do a good job with record keeping and so I’ve omitted those categories.  Next year I’ll be more meticulous and make it a point to see movie where people get destroyed while saying witty things.

However, I did see enough movies to confidently make a list of the folks I thought were the best actors, directors, and other miscellaneous greats.  Hit the jump to check out my picks.

Top 10 Soundtracks and Scores of the Decade 2001 – 2010

We’ve done top ten posters, top ten trailers and top ten Christmas movies (and an alternate Christmas list for those who disagreed with the first).

This time: scores and soundtracks. There is a distinction between the two, but it’s murky, and as more and more films are using a mix of both original scores and pre-existing tracks, who are we to try to keep them separate?  Hit the jump for more.
