With Captain America: The Winter Solider currently the number one movie around the world, it’s finally time to share some of the filmmaker interviews that get into the spoilers of the film.  At the recent Los Angeles press day, I landed an exclusive video interview with screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.  While I’ve already posted what they said about Captain America 3 and the status of the Agent Carter TV pilot, it’s now time for the Captain America: The Winter Solider spoilers talk.

Since I don’t want to spoil anything on the front page, I’ll mention what we talked about after the jump.

With directors Joe and Anthony Russo‘s Marvel sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier opening in North America this weekend, every day this week I’ve been posting a new video interview for the film. In the fantastic sequel, we find Captain America (Chris Evans) joining forces with Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and the Falcon (Anthony Mackie) to expose a conspiracy, fight off professional assassins, and battle a new enemy, the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). Loaded with amazing action, a fantastic script, and great character moments, Captain America: The Winter Solider is going to be a huge hit with Marvel fans and regular moviegoers alike. The film also stars Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie, Georges St-Pierre, Frank Grillo, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp, Maximiliano Hernández, Robert Redford, and Samuel L. Jackson. For more on the movie, here’s Matt’s review and all our previous coverage.

During my exclusive video interview with Sebastian Stan he talked about his reaction to The Winter Solider script, if he was on Twitter after the first press screening, if he was nervous signing a multi-picture deal with Marvel, how his friends and family reacted to him being cast, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Review

One of the main criticisms leveled against Captain America: The First Avenger was that Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) was simply a “good guy” and therefore didn’t have any deep inner conflict (i.e. baggage).  That was one of the things I loved most about the character.  He didn’t need some tragic past to let him know that it was good to be good.  “I don’t like bullies,” Rogers said in the first film, and that was it in a nutshell: “I don’t like bullies.”  The sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, could have made the character more twisted and melodramatic by plunging him into a darker, more complex world.  Instead, Captain America isn’t corrupted by the present day.  He’s not even tested.  His innate goodness is a beacon; it’s a bulwark against corruption.   Captain America: The Winter Soldier celebrates the good guy, and when combined with smart commentary, incredible action, and a wonderful sense of humor, it’s the best Marvel movie so far.

Captain America (Chris Evans) may be out of the 1940s and in the present day, but his latest adventure, Captain America: The Winter Soldier has still gotten a retro-style poster.  Even though you’ll probably never see this poster in a local multiplex, it’s a nice way of conveying that while Cap is a brave new world of subterfuge and intrigue, he’s still the good-hearted guy with the old-fashioned values.

Hit the jump to check out the poster.  The film also stars Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie, Georges St-Pierre, Frank Grillo, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp, Maximiliano Hernández, Robert Redford, and Samuel L. TOP 5: CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, VERONICA MARS, SXSW 2014 Coverage, NEED FOR SPEED, President Obama Visits BETWEEN TWO FERNS

Last night I managed to pull myself away from Titanfall long enough to check out Veronica Mars which, surprisingly enough, is playing in a theater within an hour of me. As a fan of the series, the movie hit every note I could have asked for but also confirmed my suspicion that Mars is best suited for the type of long-form storytelling that television permits. Creator/director Rob Thomas does an admirable job of bringing us up to speed on the lives of our favorite Neptune characters against the backdrop of a ten year high school reunion. That said, 107 minutes doesn’t leave much time for breathing in between the introduction, mystery set-up, and resolution. I often felt rushed through the process, longing for 20-22 episodes for Veronica to crack the case as opposed to 75 minutes or so. This small gripe aside, Veronica Mars is a movie made for the fans (and, in no small financial part, by the fans) and I can’t imagine anyone who loved the series walking away from it disappointed by anything other than the fact that it had to end too soon.

We’ll talk a little more about VM in this week’s Top 5 which also includes a considerable amount of Captain America: The Winter Soldier content, our SXSW 2014 coverage, interviews for and Matt’s review of Need for Speed, and President Barack Obama‘s hilarious appearance on Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis. Keep doing what you’re doing for a brief recap and link to each of the above.

With Captain America: The Winter Soldier opening in theaters on April 4th, the press junket for the film was recently held in Los Angeles.  Many, many outlets took part in the event, which means many people got to pick Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige’s brain.  Some small bits of news, information, and trivia have trickled out as a result, and we’ve compiled them all in one tidy story.  Briefly:

  • The hunt for the Doctor Strange director is ongoing but the tone will be an infusion of Stanley Kubrick and The Matrix.
  • Marvel will not be backing off its May 6, 2016 release date—now revealed to be Captain America 3—even though Warner Bros. recently slated Batman vs. Superman for the same weekend.
  • The Avengers was sent back from the MPAA multiple times with an R rating.
  • Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver will not be linked to Inhumans in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
  • Sebastian Stan signed a contract for 9 Marvel films.
  • An Avengers-related Easter Egg hidden in Captain America: The Winter Soldier has been revealed.

Marvel has released a new featurette and character posters for Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  The story has Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) teaming up to face off against an assassin known as “The Winter Soldier” (Sebastian Stan).  The featurette focuses on new character Sam Wilson (a.k.a. The Falcon), who can fly around and fire automatic weapons like a badass.  Anthony Mackie, who received high praise from early reactions to the film, plays Falcon, and I look forward to seeing the talented actor get some more recognition.

Chris Evans Is in Hot Pursuit in First Clip from CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

The first, overwhelmingly positive reactions to Marvel’s sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier arrived last night, and now Disney is taking advantage of that buzz by releasing the first clip from the pic online.  Described as a “political thriller” and directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the film finds Captain America (Chris Evans) joining forces with Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and the Falcon (Anthony Mackie) to expose a conspiracy, fight off professional assassins, and battle a new enemy, the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan).  In this debut clip, we see Cap chasing down the titular baddie through an office building.  It shows off the kind of smaller-scale action that the thriller genre offers, and at one point I half-expected Evans to shout “Parkour!”

Hit the jump to watch the clip.  The film also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Redford, Georges St-Pierre, Frank Grillo, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp, and Maximiliano Hernández.  Captain America: The Winter Soldier will open in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D.

Last year, I had the amazing opportunity to visit the set of Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, along with a small group of journalists.  We’re finally able to bring you an account of our on-set experiences, along with interviews from the cast and crew that tease the amazing action and intrigue that’s sure to come.  Directors Joe and Anthony Russo’s sequel stars Chris Evans as Captain America, but this interview is all about Sebastian Stan, starring the other title role.

While on set, Sebastian Stan talked about the moment he realized he’d be playing the Winter Soldier, getting used to the costume, playing two very different versions of Bucky Barnes in both movies, his character’s relationship with Steve Rogers, physical conditioning and much more.  Hit the jump for the interview.

One of the new characters I’m looking forward to seeing in Captain America: The Winter Soldier is Sam Wilson (a.k.a. Falcon) played by Anthony Mackie (Pain & Gain).  Falcon is one of the good guys, and he’ll be fighting alongside Cap (Chris Evans) in the upcoming superhero film.  Today, Marvel has released a character poster for Falcon featuring the wings he uses to fly (the codename is not misleading).  The studio previously released posters for Captain America, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford).

Last night, Marvel hosted a World Premiere of their new short film: the Iron Man 3 ‘sequel’ All Hail the King.  Star Ben Kingsley, writer/director Drew Pearce and Marvel honcho Kevin Feige were on hand to discuss the short, which I’ll have a lot more on in the not too distant future.  After the Q&A though, Feige treated the audience to a surprise – the opening ten minutes of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  For a recap of Winter Soldier’s opening and some thoughts on it, hit the jump.

Yesterday, Marvel released new posters and images for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and we ran our on-set interview with Chris Evans.  Today, Marvel has released another poster for the movie along with a teaser for their Super Bowl ad.  I usually find ads for ads obnoxious, but I suppose if you’re going to spend $4.5 million for 30 seconds of airtime, it doesn’t hurt to try and ramp up anticipation among the people who aren’t tuning into the Super Bowl for football.

Hit the jump to check out the poster and “Big Game” teaser (it’s adorable how they can’t say “Super Bowl”).  The film also stars Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie, Georges St-Pierre, Frank Grillo, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp, Maximiliano Hernández, Robert Redford, and Samuel L. Marvel has released new images from Captain America: The Winter Soldier as well as some higher resolution versions of previously released images.  The story has Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) teaming up to face off against an assassin known as “The Winter Soldier” (Sebastian Stan).  There’s nothing too amazing about this images, although I’m constantly taken by Cap’s new costume.  The more muted and streamlined outfit seems to fit in nicely with the less colorful, spy-thriller tone of the sequel.
