FX Picks Up Charlie Sheen’s ANGER MANAGEMENT for 90 More Episodes

It doesn’t look like Charlie Sheen will be leaving the airwaves anytime soon.  It was announced today that Sheen’s new series Anger Management has been picked up for a whopping 90 more episodes from FX.  Sheen moved to the new series following his meltdown/firing from CBS’s Two and a Half Men, and the show was greenlight for 10 episodes with the possibility of a back-90 pickup should the series meet certain ratings guidelines.  It appears that the show did indeed meet FX’s expectations, as the show averaged 4.53 million total viewers and 2.5 million in the coveted 18-49 demographic, for some reason.

Barring any more meltdowns or outrageously dickish behavior by Sheen (which is really not out of the question), this 90-episode order ensures that Anger Management will be up to 100 episodes by 2014, solidifying its place in the lucrative syndication market.  Production on the second season begins this September and new episodes will begin airing in January.  Hit the jump to read the press release.

Charlie Sheen’s ANGER MANAGEMENT Debut Sets Cable Record

It turns out America’s morbid fascination with love for Charlie Sheen has not diminished.  After a very public meltdown led to his dismissal from CBS juggernaut Two and a Half Men last year, the troubled star took his act to FX last night.  The first two episodes of his new sitcom Anger Management debuted to the best ratings for a scripted comedy in cable history (not including kids’ shows).  Episode one, at 9 pm, topped all-time records in both overall viewers (5.47 million) and the key 18-49 demographic (2.65 million).  Episode two, at 9:30, bested it by attracting 5.74 mil total and 2.89 mil in the 18-49 demo. As a point of reference, more typical FX comedy Wilfred later premiered to 2.53 mil total and 1.2 mil in 18-49.

Anger Management sees Sheen stepping into the role of ex-ball player, current anger management coach Charlie Goodson, who gets up to hijinks involving his ex-wife (Shawnee Smith), therapist (Selma Blair), teenaged daughter (Daniela Bobadilla) and various clients (Noureen DeWulf, Barry Corbin). Back in May, Comedy Central’s future slate revealed script development for a TV series adaptation of the 2005 indie comedy Waiting… starring Ryan Reynolds, Anna Faris and Justin Long. The Office Space in a chain restaurant mentality of the show seemed perfect for a half-hour comedy series, and now Deadline reports Comedy Central has finally greenlit a pilot for the potential series. Much like the film, the proposed series will follow the young and not so young employees at Shenaniganz restaurant as they gossip, make fun of customers, taint food and avert boredom and adulthood with their antics.  Each of the employees can’t seem to keep their personal life away from work as they grapple with sex, booze, and whether they are temporary or permanent fixtures in the restaurant world. No cast has been announced yet, but we’ll keep you posted.

The cast for writer-director David Wain’s new comedy Wanderlust is filling out and it’s been quite impressive. Wain co-wrote and directed Paul Rudd in Role Models, which I feel was the best comedy of 2008. Now Variety is reporting that Kathryn Hahn (Crossing Jordan, Step Brothers) will join Wain and Rudd in Wanderlust, and I can’t wait to see what wild antics she will undoubtedly have. Meanwhile, news about the World War I drama Four Saints from multi-talented Jean-Pierre Isbouts has arrived. Variety reports that Lorena Rincon, Rhona Mitra, Selma Blair, and Melanie Lynskey will topline the upcoming war drama written and directed by Isbouts. Hit the jump for further details on the cast of Wanderlust and what Four Saints is all about.

Christopher Walken, Mia Farrow, Selma Blair, Jordan Gelber, Aasif Mandvi, Justin Bartha, Zachary Booth, and Donna Murphy have all joined the cast of Dark Horse, the latest from writer/director Todd Solondz (Life During Wartime).  THR provides a brief outline for the indie drama:

The film centers on a thirtysomething man (Gelber) in arrested development who lives with his parents (Walken and Farrow), reluctantly works for his father and avidly collects toys. He seeks out a thirtysomething woman (Blair) in arrested development in an attempt to shed the “dark horse” status in his family and finally accomplish something.

Mandvi plays Blair’s “not quite ex-boyfriend,” Bartha and Booth are Gelber’s more successful brother and easygoing cousin (respectively); Murphy will portray Walken’s secretary.  Filming began earlier this week in New York.

Starz CEO Chris Albrecht isn’t the only one working on a television mob drama these days: Jamie Foxx has spent the past two weeks filming a trailer for the potential series Tommy’s Little Girl.  The project revolves around a group of mobsters, including Paul Sorvino and Sopranos alum Tony Sirico.  According to Deadline, Selma Blair is on board as Sorvino’s daughter.  As indicated by the title, their relationship would anchor the overall narrative.  Currently in the editing bay, Foxx intends to shop the trailer to “top cable networks” once it is ready.

Oddly enough, Tommy’s Little Girl makes a trend of Foxx diving into projects trailer-first.  Foxx and Martin Lawrence plan to reprise their In Living Color characters Sheneneh and Wanda after filming the movie trailer parody Skank Robbers for the BET Awards, which you can check out after the jump.

THE POKER HOUSE DVD Review

by     Posted: August 26th, 2009 at 5:17 pm

slice_selma_blair_poker_house_01.jpg

Based on the director’s own experiences, “The Poker House” chronicles a day in the life of three sisters in small-town Iowa. The protagonist is Agnes, who is meant to be first-time director Lori Petty. She is fourteen years old but, as she states, “nobody’d believe it.” As the oldest of three sisters living with their drug-addicted, prostitute mother, she takes the place as the head of the family. The father is out of the picture and replaced by the mother’s pimp, who crosses the line in his relationship with Agnes.  The other two sisters, Bee and Cammie, have also been forced to grow up too fast. Bee holds a job delivering papers and Cammie escapes to a friend’s house where she has a safe place to sleep and food to eat. The film is dark and gritty, portraying children living in a downtrodden environment with a mother too gone to care. It’s more than just poverty that is the problem; there’s also the absence of parental love. Petty gives the audience a glimpse into her rather tragic childhood. However, the fact that she wrote and directed the film, which was part of the Los Angeles Film Festival, offers some positive light on a very humbling story. My full review after the jump:
