Susanne Bier‘s Serena was shot over two years ago, and in addition to starring two of Hollywood’s hottest actors—Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper—it’s also got a great premise: Set in 1930s North Carolina, the story centers on a couple who move in order to build a timber empire. Their vicious, blind ambition turns them against each other as the sterile wife launches a vendetta against her husband’s illegitimate son.  What’s not to like?

Apparently, everything. Hit the jump for more.

SERENA Trailer and Posters: Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper Reunite in Long-Delayed Drama

At long last, the very first Serena trailer and poster for director Susanne Bier’s period drama.  The film stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper as a 1920s newlywed couple who travel to North Carolina to seize control of the timber industry.  Infidelity and infertility leads Serena (Lawrence) to become suspicious of George’s (Cooper) illegitimate son while attempting to keep their timber land from being taken by the government.  Remember all the buzz surrounding Lawrence and Cooper in 2012’s Silver Linings Playbook?  Well Serena was actually shot 10 months before the David O. Russell film came out, so you can say this one has been sitting on the shelf for a spell.  This trailer doesn’t make the movie look especially bad—it looks fine—but alas, as the picture is slated to open overseas next month, a U.S. release date remains elusive.

Hit the jump to check out the first Serena trailer and poster.  The film also stars Toby Jones, Rhys Ifans, Sam Reid, and Sean Harris and opens in the UK on October 24th.

New Image of Jennifer Lawrence in SERENA; Film Gets October 24th UK Release Date, But Remains in Limbo Stateside

Given the popularity of both Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper—especially after the one-two punch of Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle—it’s somewhat baffling that director Susanne Bier’s (In a Better World) drama Serena has sat on the shelf for this long.  The movie was shot back in 2012, and since it was completed Bier has found the time to shoot and finish another movie, with Serena still remaining unreleased.  That changes today, though, as StudioCanal has announced that it will be releasing the film internationally this fall, with a UK bow set for October 24th.  Lawrence and Cooper star as a 1920s newlywed couple who travel to North Carolina to seize control of the timber industry. Infidelity and infertility leads Serena (Lawrence) to plot the murder of George’s (Cooper) illegitimate son while attempting to keep their timber land from being taken by the government.

It’s a promising premise with fantastic pedigree, but the fact that it still hasn’t been released in the US despite Lawrence’s starpower is troubling.  Here’s hoping the fininshed feature is a pleasant surprise.  For now, check out a new Serena image featuring Lawrence after the jump, along with release date news for other international territories.

New images have been released for the drama Serena. The pic is an adaptation of the New York Times best-selling Ron Rash novel about George (Bradley Cooper) and Serena Pemberton (Jennifer Lawrence), a 1930s newlywed couple who travel to North Carolina to seize control of the timber industry. Infidelity and infertility leads Serena to plot the murder of George’s illegitimate son while attempting to keep their timber land from being taken by the government.  I’m very excited to see what Lawrence does with the role, since it sounds like a juicy part and unlike anything she’s done before.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  The film, directed by Susanne Bier (In a Better World) also stars Toby Jones and Rhys Ifans.  There’s currently no release date, but hopefully we’ll see it sometime this year.

Though Lionsgate is undoubtedly scrambling to find a director for the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire before production begins this fall, star Jennifer Lawrence is currently busy shooting the thriller Serena.  The first image from the film, featuring Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, has been released along with the announcement that production has commenced in Prague.  The pic is an adaptation of the New York Times best-selling Ron Rash novel about George (Cooper) and Serena Pemberton (Lawrence), a 1930s newlywed couple who travel to North Carolina to seize control of the timber industry. Infidelity and infertility leads Serena to plot the murder of George’s illegitimate son while attempting to keep their timber land from being taken by the government.

Director Susanne Bier (In a Better World) has just landed two more quality actors for her timber-empire thriller, Serena. Rhys Ifans (Anonymous) is currently in negotiations and Toby Jones (Captain America: The First Avenger) is set to join a cast that already features Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) and Jennifer Lawrence (X-Men: First Class). Serena is an adaptation of the New York Times best-selling Ron Rash novel about George (Cooper) and Serena Pemberton (Lawrence), a 1930s newlywed couple who travel to North Carolina to seize control of the timber industry. Infidelity and infertility leads Serena to plot the murder of George’s illegitimate son while attempting to keep their timber land from being taken by the government. Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence to Star in Adaptation of Timber Empire-Thriller SERENA

by     Posted 2 years, 234 days ago

Two of the hardest working actors today are set to retunite once more. Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, who recently wrapped David O. Russells The Silver Linings Playbook, are apparently set to star in an adaptation of Ron Rash’s novel Serena. Set in 1930s North Carolina, the story centers on a couple who move in order to build a timber empire. Their vicious, blind ambition turns them against each other as the sterile wife launches a vendetta against her husband’s illegitimate son. It’s incredibly heavy stuff, and should provide some fantastic material for the two actors.

Darren Aronofsky was previously attached to direct the project with Angelina Jolie in the starring role, but now Vulture reports that In a Better World director Susanne Bier is attached to helm. It’s refreshing that Cooper and Lawrence, who have had their fair share of commercial success, are still willing to do more dramatic, challenging material. The film is expected to be the next project for the busy Cooper, who is also expected to film Paradise Lost and The Hangover 3 this year. As for Lawrence, she heads back into training for The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire this July. Hit the jump to read a synopsis for Serena.

Darren Aronofsky and Angelina Jolie May Unite for Adaptation of Timber Empire-Thriller SERENA

by     Posted 4 years, 205 days ago

THR reports that director Darren Aronofsky and Angelina Jolie may adapt Ron Rash’s novel, Serena.  After reading the Reporter’s description of the book, it’s not difficult to see why Aronofsky or Jolie finds the material appealing:

Set in the rugged mountains of 1929 North Carolina, “Serena” follows a man named George Pemberton and his new bride, Serena, as they create a timber empire. Serena not only takes to the woods, but she also pushes her husband to commit more and more ruthless acts. When she learns she cannot bear a child, Serena sets out to murder the son her husband fathered illegitimately.

So it looks like you have the tone of There Will Be Blood except with Jolie in the power-mad Daniel Plainview role.  As we reported last week, Jolie had dropped out of Wanted 2 and it looked like she had replaced it with Gravity, a space thriller from Alfonso Cuarón, the director’s first film since 2006′s brilliant Children of MenEW then reported that Jolie passed on doing Gravity, so perhaps Selena is what she has her eye on (which would be an acceptable reason for passing up the chance to work with Cuarón).  However, THR says Jolie could also to choose to star in a movie based on author Patricia Cornwall’s crime-solving medical examiner Kay Scarpetta (which would be an unacceptable reason).  Universal says Wanted 2 isn’t dead without Jolie, but I’m more interested in discovering which project she’ll bring to life.
