Production is currently underway on one of the more high-profile pilots of this season, and some debut images from the set have landed online.  The Shield and Last Resort vet Shawn Ryan serves as executive producer and showrunner on the potential Beverly Hills Cop series, and last night he shared a few images from the set that gave us our first look at the return of Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley alongside his son, played by Brandon T. Jackson.  The show’s focus is centered on the young Aaron Foley and is described as a police procedural with a comedic element.  Murphy appears in the pilot and will potentially have a recurring role on the show should CBS pick it up to series.

ABC Cancels LAST RESORT and 666 PARK AVENUE, Gives THE NEIGHBORS a Full-Season Order

ABC will let freshman dramas Last Resort and 666 Park Avenue finish out their 13-episode seasons before giving them the ax. The network recently picked up two additional scripts for each show, but decided to pass on a renewal due to underwhelming ratings. Co-creators Shawn Ryan (The Shield) and Karl Gajdusek spoke recently on the challenges of keeping the rogue submarine drama Last Resort afloat, but the network has torpedoed it. (Apologies for the nautical puns; I’m out of my depth.)

Fans of the show will be able to see the first season of Last Resort, starring Andre Braugher and Scott Speedman, air in its entirety in its original time slot of Thursdays at 8pm. Don’t feel too bad for Ryan, who has the Beverly Hills Cop series in development at CBS with Eddie Murphy and Brandon T. Jackson attached. Ryan also has a U.S. Marshal project underway at TNT. Hit the jump for more on the demise of 666 Park Avenue and the upcoming slate of new shows on ABC.

We recently reported that a Beverly Hills Cop TV series had landed at CBS with franchise star Eddie Murphy attached for at least the pilot.  Previous reports indicated that the Shawn Ryan (The Shield) show would center on Axel Foley’s son Aaron in a blending of a buddy-cop and fish-out-of-water procedural.  Now it looks as if Brandon T. Jackson (Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief) is in final negotiations to join the series as the young Foley.  Ryan will write the pilot for the Sony Pictures Television production.  Hit the jump for more on Jackson and Beverly Hills Cop.

ABC is continuing the trend set forth by its broadcast brethren to air some of their Fall pilots online before their official premiere dates.  NBC did it with Revolution, and CBS has done it with Elementary, so now ABC is in the game offering up their military drama Last Resort to online viewers.

Last Resort was created by Shawn Ryan (The Shield) and stars Andre Braugher (Homicide: Life on the Street) and Scott Speedman (Felicity) as two Navy officers who refuse a mysterious order to fire missiles at Pakistan, making their submarine an enemy of the state.  For more on the series and to watch the premiere episode, hit the jump.

BEVERLY HILLS COP Series Lands at CBS with Pilot Commitment

The only thing CBS loves more than reviving old series is the police procedural, so to combine the two must be an exciting prospect indeed.  As such, the network as given the greenlight for a series based on the movie Beverly Hills Cop, which originally starred Eddie Murphy as a quippy Detroit detective Axel Foley who moves to Los Angeles.

The new series will not move far from its roots — not only will Murphy reprise his role for the pilot (at least, if not more), the TV show will pick up where the movie franchise left off, this time focusing on Foley’s son.  In an interesting addition, The Shield creator Shawn Ryan will serve as showrunner, which could give the series more weight.  For more on the project, hit the jump.

Eddie Murphy Teaming Up with THE SHIELD’s Shawn Ryan for BEVERLY HILLS COP TV Series

A television series iteration of the action comedy classic Beverly Hills Cop has been in the works for some time now, but it looks as if things are finally moving forward.  Vulture reports that Eddie Murphy is teaming up with The Shield creator Shawn Ryan and Sony Pictures Television on the television adaptation, but the best part is that Murphy has agreed to take an on-camera role in the show as well.  The Beverly Hills Cop TV series is being pitched to networks as we speak, and I’d be shocked if the show didn’t find a solid home very soon.

Murphy expressed his intent to appear on the show last December, saying he’d star in the pilot and would “show up here and there” throughout the rest of the series.  Hit the jump for more.

Shawn Ryan Talks LAST RESORT, the New ABC Drama Series Centering on a Rogue U.S. Submarine Crew

The new ABC drama series Last Resort, premiering on September 27th, tells a suspenseful, emotional and action-packed story about what happens when a U.S. submarine crew receives an order to fire nuclear weapons at a foreign country, and then ignores that order.

While at the ABC portion of the TCA Press Tour, show creator/executive producer Shawn Ryan (The Shield) talked about telling such an ambitious story, how the characters will come first, how realistic and technical the show will be, why director Martin Campbell was the perfect person to bring the series to life for the pilot, putting their very healthy budget on the screen, how much edge they can bring, how the special effects elements will come into play, and what shows he’s currently enjoying on TV.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Martin Campbell to Direct ABC Pilot THE LAST RESORT from Creator Shawn Ryan

Coming off the lackluster Green Lantern, director Martin Campbell is dipping his toe back into television. THR reports that Campbell has signed on to direct the pilot for the thriller The Last Resort. The series centers on “the crew of a U.S. nuclear submarine who, after ignoring an order to fire nuclear missiles, wind up being hunted and escape to a NATO outpost where they declare themselves to be the world’s smallest nuclear nation.” It’s a fantastic premise, and The Shield’s Shawn Ryan and Dead Like Me’s Karl Gajdusek are the key creative team behind the futuristic drama. In addition to directing the pilot, Campbell will serve as executive producer.

While he’s best known for films like GoldenEye, The Mask of Zorro, and Casino Royale, Campbell actually got his start in television. He worked mainly in British TV, on series like The Professionals and Edge of Darkness (which he later remade as a feature in 2010 starring Mel Gibson). Hopefully ABC picks up the Resort pilot to series as the premise and creative talent involved have my interest adequately piqued. Campbell’s follow-up to Green Lantern has yet to be decided, but we recently learned that he may direct a feature adaptation of the TV series The Fall Guy.

ABC Picks Up THE LAST RESORT from THE SHIELD Creator Shawn Ryan

As disappointed as it was to learn of The Chicago Code getting canceled earlier this year, the fact that Shawn Ryan can still make quality television like his preceding series The Shield is somewhat comforting. That’s why it’s good to hear from THR that ABC has just picked up The Last Resort, a futuristic drama series from Ryan and Dead Like Me writer Karl Gajdusek. The series would follow the crew of a U.S. nuclear submarine who, after ignoring an order to fire nuclear missiles, wind up being hunted and escape to a NATO outpost where they declare themselves to be the world’s smallest nuclear nation. Sounds like an original premise at least, and with Ryan and Gajdusek teaming on the script, I have a good feeling about this one. Stay tuned as development on plenty more new series’ for next year continues.

Shawn Ryan Interview THE CHICAGO CODE slice

The Fox cop drama The Chicago Code, from creator/executive producer/writer Shawn Ryan (The Shield), follows the city’s most powerful and respected cops as they navigate the underbelly within Chicago’s notorious political machine. While the city’s first female superintendent, Teresa Colvin (Jennifer Beals), governs Chicago politics as diplomatically as possible, her ex-partner, Chicago Police Department veteran Jarek Wysocki (Jason Clarke), works the streets in an attempt to clean up corruption and crime. As they work together to bring down powerful adversaries, that include Alderman Ronin Gibbons (Delroy Lindo), they also strive to gain the respect of those who question their methods.

During a recent interview to promote the series, Shawn Ryan talked about setting the show in his hometown, the actual plausibility of what it illustrates, balancing the politics and the character development, and thinking ahead to possible storylines for a Season 2. The Creative Masters: A Panel with Roberto Orci, Shawn Ryan, Anthony Zuiker and Gale Anne Hurd

At the 2011 TV Summit (an all day event hosted by Variety and The Academy of Television Arts and Science Foundation), television executives, creators, actors, producers and show runners came together to discuss the creative process and the financial capital and revenue models needed to sustain such shows. I arrived relatively late to the proceedings in time for the last panel of the day focusing on “The Creative Masters” of the television industry. The question of art vs. commerce loomed large over the proceedings. Every answer seemed to be tinted with the notion of whether art and business are mutually exclusive or can be one and the same. The room was filled with market researchers, representatives of conglomerates such as AOL and Comcast, and other business/market savvy tie-wearing individuals. Under such a setting, the answer to the posed art vs. commerce question unsurprisingly skewed in the latter’s direction. Hit the jump for my coverage of the panel, including interviews with producers/show runners Shawn Ryan (The Shield), Roberto Orci (Fringe, Transformers Prime), Anthony Zuiker (CSI) and Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead).

Jennifer Beals Interview THE CHICAGO CODE

The Chicago Code is the compelling new police drama from acclaimed creator/executive producer Shawn Ryan, premiering on Fox on February 7th. The series follows Teresa Colvin (Jennifer Beals), Chicago’s first female superintendent, and her ex-partner, Jarek Wysocki (Jason Clarke), a veteran of the Chicago Police Department, as they navigate the city’s underbelly to fight crime and expose corruption. Together, they will stop at nothing to bring down their enemies, including Alderman Ronin Gibbons (Delroy Lindo), a building-magnate-turned-politician who quickly proves to be a powerful and formidable adversary.

During a recent conference call to promote this new original series, actress Jennifer Beals talked about what drew her back to series television, taking on such a strong and tough character, the most surprising part of doing ride-along research with the Chicago police force, being a native of Chicago herself, working with this strong ensemble of actors, and how the success of The L Word impacted her career.
