Sometimes buying a Blu-ray is worth the price simply to have a favorite movie on hand for repeat viewings.  Occasionally, if the film wasn’t quite as strong as you would have hoped during its theatrical release, the extras on the Blu-ray make a purchase worthwhile because they elucidate the film’s production through additional features such as a director’s cut or commentary and behind-the-scenes featurettes.  Unfortunately, the Silent Hill: Revelation 3D Blu-ray boasts neither an enjoyable feature nor worthwhile bonus material.  Hit the jump for my review.

Weekend Box Office: ARGO Beats CLOUD ATLAS and SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D on Painfully Slow Weekend

by     Posted 1 year, 362 days ago

With Hurricane Sandy bearing down on the East Coast, a perfect storm of indifference hit the domestic box office. Blame it on the weather or on a weak crop of new studio releases, the outcome is the same: a slow weekend that fell behind 2011 by more than 10%. Only Argo found a silver lining in the storm, pulling into first place after two weeks in theatres. As for Cloud Atlas – the most closely watched newcomer of the frame – the forecast is a little, um, cloudy.

Title Weekend Total
1. Argo $12,355,000 $60.7
2. Hotel Transylvania $9,500,000 $130.4
3. Cloud Atlas $9,400,000 $9.4
4. Paranormal Activity 4 $8,675,000 $42.6
5. Silent Hill: Revelation 3D $8,000,000 $8
6. Taken 2 $8,000,000 $117.3
7. Here Comes the Boom $5,500,000 $30.6
8. Sinister $5,070,000 $39.5
9. Alex Cross $5,050,000 $19.3
10. Fun Size $4,060,000 $4

Friday Box Office: ARGO Tops CLOUD ATLAS and SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D Entering Extremely Weak Weekend

With four new wide releases, you’d think the box office would be primed to close out October with another strong weekend. You’d be wrong. The prospects for the four newbies – including Cloud Atlas and Silent Hill: Revelation 3D – looked shaky even before the so-called ‘Frankenstorm’ trained its eye on America’s East Coast. Now, a combination of poor Cinemascores and Hurricane hysteria seems poised to put Argo on top with one of the lowest first-place wins since September. On its third Friday in theatres, Argo edged out Silent Hill 2 and Cloud Atlas for first with an estimated $4 million. The Ben Affleck drama is expected to stay on top (for its first weekend win) while Silent Hill falls to number four. That means that Cloud Atlas, the epic drama co-directed by the Wachowski siblings and Tom Tykwer, should move into second place with close to $10 million – $3 million under initial projections. If the Cloud Atlas debut seems disappointing, however, it could have been worse. Despite a big release in 3,014 locations, Paramount’s Fun Size just missed Friday’s top ten with its estimate of $1.3 million. Fox’s Chasing Mavericks, with Gerard Butler, fared even worse: twelfth place on Friday with $1 million from 2,002 runs.

 Title Friday Total
1.  Argo $4,000,000 $52.3
2.  Silent Hill: Revelation 3D $3,500,000 $3.5
3.  Cloud Atlas $3,455,000 $3.4
4.  Paranormal Activity 4 $3,140,000 $37
5.  Taken 2 $2,575,000 $111.9

Well, today is the day for supernatural sequel clips it seems, because we have two to share with you. First up from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2this new clip features newly-turned vampire, Bella (Kristen Stewart) arm wrestling against Emmett (Kellan Lutz).  They amazingly assembled everything about this property that sets my teeth on edge (bad dialogue, terrible make-up, impromptu musical cues, etc) into one concise clip.  Directed by Bill Condon, the film also stars Robert PattinsonTaylor Lautner, Mackenzie Foy, Peter Facinelli, Ashley Greene, Elizabeth Reaser and Jackson Rathbone.  The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 opens November 16th.

We’ve also got a clip from Michael J. Bassett’s Silent Hill: Revelation 3D.   This one centers on Heather Mason (Adelaide Clemens) calling her father (Sean Bean) in fear that someone is following her.  He gives her some sage fatherly advice and then OH NO LOOK OUT SEAN BEAN! The film opens on October 26th. Halloween is right around the corner and with it comes Michael J. Bassett’s Silent Hill: Revelation 3D.  The follow-up to Christophe Gans’ 2006 original adaptation of the horror survival game, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D picks up on the even of protagonist Heather Mason’s (Adelaide Clemens) 18th birthday.  This new clip features Clemens and co-star Deborah Kara Unger talking as an air-raid siren signals their approaching doom.

And in case you missed our earlier exclusive clip from director Robert Zemeckis’ Flight, we have a bonus one for you this evening.  The clip features post-plane crash pilot, Whip Whitaker (Denzel Washington) in his hospital room being visited by his friend (John Goodman) who must have been pre-Pharmacy in college.  Hit the jump to check out the clips.

New York Comic-Con: SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D Panel Recap; SILENT HILL 3 Inspirations, Using 3D, and More

For me, there are two seminal video game horror franchises:  Resident Evil and Silent Hill.  Both came out for the original PlayStation, and they each had a niche.  Resident Evil was the haunted house story, and Silent Hill was the psychological horror.  When it comes to their film adaptations, Resident Evil has veered wildly away from the original games, and also become a huge franchise.  Meanwhile, Silent Hill was adapted in 2006, but it failed to leave an impression.  This month, Director Michael J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) will try to bring the franchise back to life with Silent Hill: Revelation 3D.  The film had a panel at this year’s New York Comic-Con with Bassett, producer Samuel Hadida (who also produced the first film), and stars Adelaide Clemens and Kit Harington.

This weekend, I will be attending the New York Comic-Con for the first time.  I’m not exactly sure what to expect in terms of the convention’s vibe, but there’s definitely some interesting stuff on deck including a first look at the remakes of Carrie and Evil Dead plus new footage from other horror flicks Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, The Bay, and The Conjuring as well as a panel for the supernatural love story, Beautiful Creatures.  There will also be panels for geek-favorite TV series The Walking Dead and Robot Chicken.  I’ll be reporting from these panels and more, so be sure to stay tuned to Collider this weekend.  Steve will also be at NYCC doing 1-on-1 interviews.

New Motion Poster for SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D Featuring Pyramid Head, Plus More Theatrical Posters from the SILENT HILL Sequel

As far as horror survival game adaptations go, it’s easy to see that Resident Evil has proven more successful than Silent Hill; that won’t stop a sequel to the 2006 horror thriller from coming out later this month.  Director Michael J. Bassett’s Silent Hill: Revelation 3D follows nearly-18-year-old Heather Mason (Adelaide Clemens) and her father (Sean Bean) as they attempt to escape the living nightmares that plague them.  When her father disappears (and for Bean, disappearing > dead), Heather becomes trapped in a demonic world and learns she’s not who she thinks she is.

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D also stars Carrie-Anne Moss, Radha Mitchell, Malcolm McDowell and Kit Harington, and opens October 26th.  Hit the jump to see the posters.

First Trailer for SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D

The first theatrical trailer for Silent Hill: Revelation 3D has been released.  The film is a sequel to 2006’s Silent Hill, and centers on a daughter and father who are on the run from dangerous forces that remain unknown to the young girl.  When her father goes missing, the young girl (Adelaide Clemens) must set out to discover what happened.  I’m not familiar with the video game series or the first film, but Game of Thrones fans might get a kick out of seeing Sean Bean and a clean-shaven Kit Harington.  The pic also looks to have some interesting creature design, and it’s obvious from the footage that the 3D will be put to heavy use.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer, and if you missed it you can watch the first clip from the film right here.  The pic also stars Carrie-Anne MossMalcolm McDowellRadha MitchellDeborah Kara Unger, and Martin Donovan.  Silent Hill: Revelation 3D opens on October 26th, 2012.
