CON AIR Director Simon West Says He’d Like to Make CON AIR 2 a “CON AIR in Space” Sequel

by     Posted 112 days ago

One of the more curious sequel possibilities floating around the past few years has been Con Air 2.  Director Simon West’s 1997 actioner was a modest success at the box office, grossing $224 million worldwide, and while it was a classic Jerry Bruckheimer actioner with many quotable Nicolas Cage lines and a nutty John Malkovich performance, it was somewhat forgotten as the bigger and more four-quadrant friendly blockbusters of the 2000s started changing the moviegoing landscape.  However, fans of Con Air (myself included) were intrigued to hear back in 2011 that West was keen on making a Con Air sequel, and while the film has obviously failed to materialize, West recently spoke a bit more about what he’d like to do with the follow-up, and the “hook” may surprise you.  More after the jump.

While the sequel managed to top the experience of the first film, the Blu-ray has plenty of extras to keep fans busy, including a commentary track by director Simon West (Con Air) that provides a lot of behind-the-scenes info. Want to know what weapons the Expendables used? Want to know how much bigger the sequel could have been? Want to see the real life Expendables the movie characters referenced? Well then hit the jump for my review of The Expendables 2 on Blu-ray.

Simon West to Direct Jason Statham in HEAT

by     Posted 2 years, 17 days ago

We previously announced that action star Jason Statham (The Transporter) would be starring in Heat, and it looks like director Simon West (Con Air) is also on board.  Around the time of Statham’s attachment, Brian De Palma (Scarface) was expected to direct, but now the remake looks to pair West and Statham once again; the director/actor duo have previously worked on The Mechanic and The Expendables 2.  When next they meet, it will be for Heat, a remake of the 1986 film starring Burt Reynolds as a bodyguard taking odd jobs to support his gambling addiction in Vegas.  Hit the jump to see how West and Statham plan on putting a modern spin on the film.

First Trailer for STOLEN Starring Nicolas Cage and Malin Akerman

by     Posted 2 years, 92 days ago

The first trailer for the action thriller Stolen has been released.  Previously referred to as Medallion, the film reteams Nicolas Cage with his Con Air director Simon West.  Cage plays a former master thief who only has a few hours to find his daughter when she is kidnapped and locked in the trunk of a New York taxi cab.  Malin Akerman plays Cage’s ex-girlfriend with whom he teams up to find his daughter, while a long-haired Josh Lucas plays the antagonist, Cage’s former partner who’s gone a bit off the deep end.  Despite the cheesy “movie trailer man” voice over, the film actually looks like it could be a fun ride.  The Taken comparisons can’t be ignored, but under the direction of West Stolen doesn’t seem to be taking itself too seriously.  And was that a stuffed animal I saw in Cage’s arms or was I dreaming?

Exclusive Poster for THE EXPENDABLES 2 Adds Muscle to “The Last Supper”

by     Posted 2 years, 107 days ago

If action movies of the 80s and 90s are my religion, then The Expendables 2 just gave me my last rites.  Lionsgate is letting us premiere a new poster that features the entire kick-ass cast assembled along one of the most famous tables in artistic history.  While scholars have deciphered Da Vinci’s painting “The Last Supper” for centuries, the companion image from The Expendables 2 is more my style, complete with guns, skulls and plenty of booze.

Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Chuck Norris, Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Liam Hemsworth, Scott Adkins and Yu Nan star in the sequel to Stallone’s bone-breaking 2010 original film.  Directed by Simon West, The Expendables 2 opens August 17th.  Hit the jump to see the exclusive poster.

THE EXPENDABLES 2 Clip Features Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham and Liam Hemsworth

by     Posted 2 years, 142 days ago

I make no apologies for being excited about The Expendables 2, regardless of how over the top and absurd it might look.  Actually, I’m excited because of that, not in spite of it.  So now that we’ve got a look at the first clip from the film, I’m happy to say that it’s more or less what you would have expected if you were a fan of the first film.  It features Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and Lee Christmas (Jason Statham) trading bullets, explosions and one-liners with a gang of mercenaries.  Lucky for the expendable duo, they brought backup.

Simon West’s The Expendables 2, also starring Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Liam Hemsworth, Yu Nan, Chuck Norris, Scott Adkins and Jean Claude Van Damme, opens August 17th.  Hit the jump to check out the clip.

by     Posted 2 years, 179 days ago

Do you love America?  Do you love guns, explosions, muscles, action, tanks, explosions, violence, fighting and explosions?  If you do, then you’re a lot like me, pal.  And we’ve got mutual friends in The Monocular Group, who have put this awesome fan trailer together for The Expendables 2.  They’re also here to remind us that long before a bunch of gussied-up prima donnas assembled to fight evil, there were men to handle our problems: big, strong men with powerful guns and boots on the ground.  In a summer dominated by superhero fare, let us not forget the men that built the foundation of the action movie.  These men include Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Jet Li, Randy Couture and Terry Crews. The Expendables 2 also stars Liam Hemsworth, who has something to prove, and Scott Adkins, who should feel right at home with this crew.  The movie opens this August 17th in America, the Land of Guns and Awesome.  Hit the jump to check out the trailer.

Finances Secured for Computer-Generated 3D Action Thriller THUNDER RUN, Starring Matthew McConaughey, Gerard Butler and Sam Worthington

by     Posted 2 years, 187 days ago

Financials have been squared away for the all-computer-generated, 3D action thriller, Thunder Run, starring Matthew McConaughey, Gerard Butler and Sam WorthingtonBrian Presley’s Freedom Films was able to secure a P & A arrangement, just prior to the start of Cannes, in a deal that shares the financial burden between Freedom and Fred Malmburg’s Paradox Entertainment.  A good thing, since VFX work has already begun on the ambitious project, an adaptation of a non-fiction  book by Pulitzer Prize-winning correspondent, David Zucchino. “Thunder Run – The Armored Strike to Capture Baghdad” tells of the capture of the Iraqi capital by American forces at the onset of the Iraq War in April of 2003.  Zucchino’s novel was adapted by Academy Award-winner Robert Port (Twin Towers) and Black Hawk Down screenwriter, Ken Nolan. by     Posted 2 years, 340 days ago

Lionsgate has released the first trailer for The Expendables 2, directed by Simon West (The Mechanic).  It’s a teaser that doesn’t get into plot, or even showcase any major action.  At this early stage, with over 9 months to go until the August 17 release, the film is selling itself entirely on the reputation of the cast: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Liam Hemsworth, Jean Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

If you are interested in the plot, the studio also unveiled the first official synopsis for The Expendables 2 along with a new promo poster.  See it all after the jump.

Simon West in Talks to Direct 1950s Car Racing Movie DUST AND GLORY

by     Posted 2 years, 356 days ago

Simon West is in negotiations with Top Cat Media and Blue Star Entertainment to direct Dust and Glory, a car racing movie described as a cross between Mad Max and Jewel of the Nile.  According to THR, “the romance adventure project is set during the 1950s’ Redex trials, which covered more than 10,000 miles of some of the toughest racing terrain in Australia, if not the world.”  Robert Lewis Galinsky adapted the screenplay from the novel Dust and Glory by Evan Green.

I can’t find much more about the out-of-print book (check out this threadbare Amazon page), but there is an official Dust and Glory site with minor updates on the movie.  Top Cat says they are in discussion with an “A-list cast and director.”  West is a solid choice for this type of action movie—we’ll see if that leads to the desired A-list cast.  West is currently shooting The Expendables 2Dust and Glory is tentatively scheduled for a summer 2012 shoot in Australia.

Promo Posters for ASS BACKWARDS, CARNAVAL, and THUNDER RUN Starring Sam Worthington and Gerard Butler

by     Posted 3 years, 13 days ago

We’ve got another round up of stuff from the American Film Market to share with you today in the way of promo posters for Ass Backwards, Thunder Run, and Carnaval. Thunder Run is the 3D motion-capture war film starring Gerard Butler, Sam Worthington, and Matthew McConaughey. Directed by Simon West (Con Air), the film centers on the 2003 capture of Baghdad. The comedy Ass Backwards stars Alicia Silverstone, Jon Cryer, Casey Wilson (Happy Endings) and Vincent D’Onofrio and centers on two best friends who head back to their hometown in an attempt to win a pageant they never won as children.

Carnaval stars John Cusack and Johnny Knoxville and centers on a sports scout (Cusack) who is forced to head down to Rio de Janeiro to recruit the world’s top soccer player. Gerard Butler, Sam Worthington, and Matthew McConaughey to Star in 3D Motion-Capture War Movie THUNDER RUN

by     Posted 3 years, 23 days ago

A trio of burly men have signed on to the Iraq war movie Thunder Run. Gerard Butler, Sam Worthington, and Matthew McConaughey are set to star in the action-thriller from director Simon West (Con Air). However, this isn’t your typical war pic, as Thompson on Hollywood reports that the film will be made using 3D motion-capture technology. The film centers on the 2003 capture of Baghdad, and is based on David Zucchino’s novel Thunder Run - The Armored Strike to Capture Baghdad. Black Hawk Down scribes Robert Port and Ken Nolan are handling screenwriting duties, and the film has apparently been in development for five years. Freedom Films’ Brian Presley had this to say:

“[This will be the] first ever conventional war film made to utilize this revolutionary facial and motion capture technology and state of the art CG and 3D.”

I’m not exactly sure how they plan to make this movie not look like Call of Duty, but it’s certainly a unique idea. Since the motion-capture process necessitates a lengthy post-production, it may be awhile until we actually see the film on the big screen. Hit the jump to read the synopsis of Zucchino’s novel.

Liam Hemsworth Joins THE EXPENDABLES 2

by     Posted 3 years, 61 days ago

It appears that the cast of The Expendables 2 won’t be entirely made up of aging action stars. Fresh off his role in Gary Ross’ highly anticipated adaptation of The Hunger Games, Liam Hemsworth has joined the cast of the action flick. We recently reported that rumored additions Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris are confirmed to be appearing in the film, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis set to reprise their roles from the first outing. Sylvester Stallone toplines, with Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, and Terry Crews all set to return as well.

Variety’s reports states that Hemsworth will be playing a sniper in the film. Statham recently told Steve that filming begins at the end of this month in Bulgaria. One can safely assume that the story involves guns and explosions. That leaves John Travolta and Donnie Yen as the other two rumored additions that have yet to be confirmed. Simon West (Con Air) is directing. The Expendables 2 opens August 17, 2012.

Rumored Cast for EXPENDABLES 2 Includes Schwarzenegger, Willis, Travolta, Van Damme, and Chuck Norris

by     Posted 3 years, 113 days ago

Filming on the sequel to Sylvester Stallone’s 2010 all-star action movie The Expendables is set to begin in September, and now rumors are starting to swirl about what action heavyweights will be along for the ride this time around. Shooting will be taking place in Bulgaria, and the CEO of Bulgaria-based NU Boyana studios David Varod recently dropped some huge names when listing the cast for The Expendables 2 to Novinite: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, John Travolta, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis.

We expected Stallone, Statham, Lundgren and Rourke to return, but this is the first time we’ve heard of Travolta, Norris and Vam Damme’s involvement (Stallone has been wanting Schwarzenegger and Willis to return for a while). However, just because Varod listed them off doesn’t mean all of these actors mentioned are definitely in the film. Hit the jump for more.
