Back in 2010, Zero Dark Thirty director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal were coming off their Oscar wins for The Hurt Locker, and turning their attention to the crime drama Triple Frontier (also known as Sleeping Dogs). The details of the plot were unknown, but the film was billed as an action-adventure set in a border zone of South America known as “la triple frontera”, a haven for organized crime. Tom Hanks was attached to play one of the leads, and other stars were rumored for the picture including Johnny Depp, Sean Penn, Denzel Washington, and Javier Bardem. The plan was to start filming in March 2011. But then Bigelow and Boal decided to hit pause, and do an indie thriller before Triple Frontier. It’s worth noting that Variety shot down a rumor that “the plot concerns the hunt for Osama Bin Laden,” even though that rumor ultimately turned out to be true. However, at that time the indie thriller was about losing Bin Laden in the Tora Bora Mountains; once he was killed, the script had to be updated.

Last month, we reported that Tom Hanks was “seriously considering” a starring role in Triple Frontier, the new film from Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker). Producer Charles Roven now tells ComingSoon that Hanks is officially on board. Roven added that they were still casting the other roles and they were aiming for a mid-March 2011 shoot. He also referred to the project as “Triple Frontier” and not as its other rumored title, “Sleeping Dogs”.
Written by Hurt Locker scribe Mark Boal, the film centers on a border zone of South America known as “la triple frontera”, and is a haven for drug cartels. There’s a strong Middle Eastern community who have long been linked to Islamic extremists and their money laundering activities. Tom Hanks is reportedly circling a lead role in Kathryn Bigelow’s Sleeping Dogs (formerly known as Triple Frontier). Penned by The Hurt Locker scribe Mark Boal, the film is set within an organized crime district between Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil while focusing on the lives of five men who work in said area. The film is set to begin production early next year and, while an offer is yet to be extended Hanks’ way, Heat Vision reports that the two-time Oscar winner is currently in talks with Bigelow to play one of the five principal leads.
The report also mentions Leonardo DiCaprio and Jeremy Renner as names mentioned alongside the project at one point or another. Back in August, we reported that Bigelow had met with Javier Bardem, Christian Bale, Sean Penn, and Will Smith about starring as well. In the meantime, Hanks is set to star alongside Sandra Bullock in Stephen Daldry’s (The Reader) adaptation of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and is starring in/writing/directing Larry Crowne which also stars Julia Roberts, Bryan Cranston, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (TV’s Undercovers).
