Say what you want about young adult book-to-film adaptations, but the large majority of them do come with quality soundtracks.  The Twilight Saga made a point of it, Vampire Academy even has a song selection well worth checking out and The Hunger Games franchise is no different.  For the first Hunger Games film, it was all about Taylor Swift’s “Safe & Sound,” then Catching Fire got Coldplay’s “Atlas” and now The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 has Lorde’s “Yellow Flicker Beat.”

Both “Safe & Sound” and “Atlas” are solid songs and right in line with the Hunger Games tone, but neither ever snagged a spot on a personal playlist.  “Yellow Flicker Beat,” however, just did.  Hit the jump to check out the very first single from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 soundtrack.  The film stars Jennifer, Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam HemsworthWoody Harrelson,  Julianne MoorePhilip Seymour HoffmanElizabeth BanksNatalie DormerSam Claflin, Jena Malone and Donald Sutherland, and is due to hit theaters on November 21st.

Listen to a Track from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ GONE GIRL Score; Plus 9 New Images

October 3rd seems so close and yet so far away.  Gone Girl is hands down my most anticipated film of the rest of the year, not because of the story or source material, but because David Fincher is one of the few truly uncompromising filmmakers we have left.  When the film hits theaters, we’ll know that this is Fincher’s film through and through, and he seems to have a lot to say about relationships and our inherent narcissistic nature in the telling of this story.  Another reason to be excited about Gone Girl is the score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.  The duo’s work on The Social Network is one of the vital pieces that makes that movie a masterpiece, and while their Girl with the Dragon Tattoo score was a bit too similar-sounding to Social Network for my taste, I’m incredibly curious to see what they’ve come up with for Gone Girl.  And I’m in luck, because the very first Gone Girl soundtrack clip has been released online, and it teases a very different—yet still haunting—kind of score.  Is that a copy machine I hear?

Take a listen to the first Gone Girl soundtrack clip from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross after the jump, along with some new images from the film.  Starring Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Tyler PerryCarrie CoonKim DickensPatrick FugitScoot McNairyMissi PyleCasey WilsonEmily Ratajkowski, and Neil Patrick Harris, Gone Girl will premiere at the New York Film Festival and opens in theaters on October 3rd.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: Soundtrack Cover Art and Tracklisting; Includes David Bowie, The Runaways, Marvin Gaye, and More

One of the things I’ve liked about the Guardians of the Galaxy trailers is how they’ve used unconventional song choices to convey that this film has its own personality.  It turns out tunes such as Blue Swede‘s “Hooked on a Feeling”, Norman Greenbaum‘s “Spirit in the Sky”, and The Runaways‘ “Cherry Bomb” aren’t just in the trailers; they’ll also be on the film’s soundtrack.  There are also plenty of other exciting song selections such as David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream”, The Jackson 5‘s “I Want You Back”, and Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell‘s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”.  I can’t wait to hear how they’ll be used in the movie.

I’ve been counting down to November 11th to buy the excellent soundtrack for Inside Llewyn Davis.  As I said in my review, music hasn’t been this important in a Coen Brothers‘ movie since O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and once again, music producer T-Bone Burnett has put together another amazing collection of songs.  This time around, it’s folk music, and I love every song on this album.  The entire soundtrack is now available to stream on NPR, but fair warning: you should probably skip the track “Please Mr. Kennedy”.  It’s a funny song, but it will work better if you see Oscar Isaac, Justin Timberlake, and Adam Driver perform it in the movie first.

Director Joseph Kosinski famously collaborated with the music duo Daft Punk on the score for Tron: Legacy, and for his new film Oblivion, Kosinski has once again reached out to the music community for the pic’s soundtrack.  The filmmaker has been developing Oblivion for a number of years, and in a recent interview with Steve the filmmaker revealed that as early as his first treatment for the script in 2005, he had noted his desire for a soundtrack from the electronic band M83.

Kosinski’s dream came true, as Anthony Gonzales and Co. have composed the entire original score for Oblivion and now the first track from their efforts has been unveiled online.  “StarWaves” is a decidedly synth-heavy cut, but it does a nice job of mirroring the scope and expansiveness of Oblivion that we’ve seen in the trailers.  Hit the jump to take a listen and to see what Kosinski had to say about M83’s score for the film.  Oblivion opens in IMAX and traditional theaters on April 19th.

Tickets for both The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and theatrical marathons for the extended editions of The Lord of the Rings trilogy go on sale this coming Wednesday, and a new TV spot for Peter Jackson’s upcoming adaptation of the former has now landed online.  The spot highlights the advanced tickets sale and boasts a bit of new footage, but more excitingly a preview of Lord of the Rings composer Howard Shore’s score for The Hobbit has also been released.  We recently got a look at the full tracklisting, and now “Radagast the Brown” has landed online in its entirety.  It’s at once familiar and new, with some lighter/more playful bits reflecting the different tone of The Hobbit in relation to Lord of the Rings.

I’m eager to see Jackson’s three-part adaptation of The Hobbit on the big screen, but I’m almost just as excited to hear Howard Shore’s return to Middle Earth.  Hit the jump to check out the TV spot and to preview the soundtrack.  The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens in 3D on December 14th. [Update: Warner Bros. has released 7 new high-resolution images which are now included after the jump.]

The full soundtrack for The Dark Knight Rises is now streaming online.  We previously posted 30-second clips from each track, but now you can listen to the every song in its entirety.  After listening to the first few tracks, I like what I’m hearing.  The aggressive blaring horns from Batman Begins and The Dark Knight have been replaced with aggressive percussion that sounds almost tribal.  Also, if you’d like to hear the track that was used in this trailer, it’s “Gotham’s Reckoning”.  It’s worth pointing out that while Hans Zimmer previously teamed with James Newton Howard on the previous two Batman films, this score is Zimmer going solo.

Hit the jump to listen to the soundtrack, which will be available to buy and download on July 16th.  The film stars Christian Bale, Tom HardyAnne HathawayGary OldmanMorgan Freeman, Michael CaineMarion Cotillard, and Joseph Gordon-LevittThe Dark Knight Rises opens July 20th. Easily one of the most widely known composers working today, Hans Zimmer’s variety of compositions ranges from bombastic (Pirates of the Caribbean) to ethereal (Gladiator) to bubbly (The Holiday).  In addition to scoring an average of 27 films a year, the composer has also worked up a nice collaboration with director Christopher Nolan having done the first two Batman films and 2010’s Inception.  He returns as composer for The Dark Knight Rises, though this time he’s taking the reins without James Newton Howard, who collaborated with Zimmer on Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.  We recently got our first look at the track listing for the Dark Knight Rises soundtrack, and now 30-second samples of Zimmer’s score have landed online that give us a nice tease of what the composer has cooked up for the villain Bane.

Now that you’ve (hopefully) scored your tickets to the concluding entry in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, it’s time to start making logistical preparations for the sure-to-be-packed midnight event at your local theater.  In the meantime, Warner Bros. has marked the ticket sale occasion by releasing a new TV spot for The Dark Knight Rises that shows a bit of new footage.  Yes, the doom and gloom continues with Michael Caine’s Alfred proclaiming that Bane was “born and raised in hell on earth,” but I’m happy to see some shades of the humor that was sprinkled throughout Batman Begins but was more or less absent in the earnest yet swell follow-up The Dark Knight.  Additionally, the soundtrack listing for Hans Zimmer’s score has also landed online along with possible artwork.

December was the month of epic soundtrack news, with Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross reuniting for David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and the more recent announcement of The Hunger Games soundtrack, produced by T Bone Burnett and featuring Taylor Swift. While the musical lineup for the fourth installment in the Underworld series is unlikely to garner an Academy Award, the goth-centric soundtrack is sure to be a commercial success, if the trend from the previous movies continues. The Lakeshore Records album will feature 17 tracks of rock/metal songs that fit in lock-step with the dark energy of Underworld: Awakening. Previous contributors that are making a repeat appearance include Lacuna Coil, Black Light Burns and Linkin Park, with Chester Bennington having contributed a solo track on the first album. The soundtrack will be available in stores on January 17th, three days before Underworld: Awakening hits screens. Hit the jump to check out the full soundtrack.

Shawn Levy Talks REAL STEEL Soundtrack, Landing Timbaland, and His Goal for the Film

Director Shawn Levy Real Steel interview slice

One of the many things that really impressed me about director Shawn Levy’s Real Steel was the soundtrack.  Unlike some movies where the songs feel out of place and you’ve never heard of the artists, Levy assembled a great mix of music from Timbaland, Crystal Method, Danny Elfman, Eminem, Tom Morello, Limp Bizkit, Beastie Boys, 50 Cent, Foo Fighters and Alexi Murdoch.

So when I sat down with Levy at the press day, he told me how he put together the soundtrack and tells a great story about his first meeting with Timbaland.  In addition, he talked about his goal for Real Steel, whether or not he got notes from the studio about Hugh Jackman playing an asshole for the majority of the film, and revealed that Real Steel was the most creative control he’s ever had on any movie.  Hit the jump to watch.
