Oscar season must be getting closer, as couple of interesting awards-related stories have surfaced today.  First up, Lionsgate’s comedy Stand Up Guys is getting an awards-qualifying run in New York and Los Angeles on December 14th, per THR.  The film stars Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, and Alan Arkin as retired gangsters who reunite for one last epic night where, naturally, everything goes to hell.  I’m not sure how strong the chances are of generating a nomination or two for some of the cast, but it can’t hurt for Lionsgate to try.  The pic opens wide on January 11th.

Additionally, it looks like Sony may be rethinking their release strategy with the highly anticipated “kill Bin Laden” drama Zero Dark Thirty.  Hit the jump for more.

First Trailer for STAND UP GUYS Starring Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin

The first theatrical trailer for director Fisher Stevens’ Stand Up Guys has gone online.  Starring Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin as retired gangsters who reunite for one last epic night, the plot of Stand Up Guys also features a tense undercurrent that comes across well in the trailer.  Their former mob boss, played by Mark Margolis, pits them against each other when he orders one last hit.  The trailer, while revealing perhaps a bit too much of the plot, hits all the right notes and makes this one to keep an eye on as 2013 draws nearer.

Stand Up Guys, also starring Julianna Margulies, opens January 11th, 2013.  Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

You’re driving down the street, and it’s suddenly blocked off.  You notice these weird yellow signs with nonsensical letters or numbers.  There’s unusual glow lighting up a neighborhood you can’t usually see from your house.  What you might have here is a film company shooting in your town.  It happens a lot, and you never know where they might pop up…until now.

The following is a semi-comprehensive list of films currently shooting, what they’re shooting, and where they’re shooting.  We’ll be telling you where you might get to see the very famous, the kinda famous and (if all goes well) the soon-to-be famous. While we can’t list every single movie, television show, or student film in production, you’ll get a pretty good idea of what the heck is going on where all those people are buzzing about.  Want to know where in the world are Matt Damon, Harrison Ford, Sylvester Stallone, Woody Harrelson, and Leonardo DiCaprio? Elle Fanning and Olly Alexander to Star in Musical GOD HELP THE GIRL; Vanessa Ferlito and Katheryn Winnick Join STAND UP GUYS

Elle Fanning (Super 8) and Olly Alexander (Enter the Void) have signed on to star in God Help the Girl, a musical written and directed by Belle & Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch.  The band released a concept album titled God Help the Girl as a precursor to the film under the conceit of a “girl group” sound.  Eve, the main character sung by Catherine Ireton on the album, has yet to be cast.  According to Variety, Alexander will play “a cynical guitarist who accompanies Eve’s singing and becomes a mentor to Cass (Fanning), an American teen who tags alongside the duo as she learns to play the guitar.”  Producers Barry Mendel, Carole Sheridan, Chris Curling, and Phil Robertson raised more than $100,000 on Kickstarter to finance the movie.  HanWay Films will package the international rights to shop around at Cannes.  Murdoch will begin filming in Glasgow in June before Fanning moves on to shoot Disney’s Sleeping Beauty re-imagining Maleficent.

Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, and Alan Arkin to Star in Action-Comedy STAND UP GUYS

by     Posted 2 years, 76 days ago

A trio of Hollywood veterans is set for the action-comedy Stand Up Guys. THR reports that Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, and Alan Arkin will star in the project for director Fisher Stevens (Just a Kiss). The story “centers on two aging criminals, one of whom has been hired to kill his friend. They decide to enjoy one last night of debauchery in which they hit up a brothel, steal some cars and evade police but also face the choices they made in their lives.” I genuinely love Pacino, Walken, and Arkin but I can’t help but worry that the project might veer into Old Dogs territory. They’re undeniably legends of the silver screen so I’m hoping their talent won’t be wasted, but action-comedies are incredibly hard to pull off and the tone has to be nailed perfectly.

Hopefully my apprehension will be unfounded, but I remain cautiously optimistic about the project. Walken is currently filming Seven Psychopaths with Colin Farell, Arkin recently wrapped Ben Affleck’s Argo, and Pacino will next be seen in the untitled Phil Spector biopic on HBO.
