Marvel makes it look easy. That's what kept running through my head while watching Iron Man 3 Thursday night. Pumping out one solid standalone film after another with the overall goal of creating a whole that is equally, if not more, entertaining than its formidable parts can't be that easy. And yet, Marvel makes it seem that way. In a medium outside of their native reach no less. Granted, Iron Man 3 isn't without its flaws. But it doesn't have to be. It succeeds on the exact level it's meant to: in moving both the individual character and universal stories ahead in an entertaining and logical way. If "Marvel makes it looks easy" was my primary takeaway from IM3, "DC has their work cut out for them" isn't far behind.
But enough Marvel love for one opening paragraph. In this week's Top 5 we've got Iron Man 3 interviews with director Shane Black and more, a video blog review for Star Trek Into Darkness, the Pacific Rim trailer from WonderCon, Fox's courting of Michael B. Jordan the the role of Human Torch in its upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, and the new trailer for Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx's White House Down. A brief recap and link to each is a "Continue Reading" click away.
1. IRON MAN 3 Interviews with Shane Black and More

I briefly share my thoughts on the pic in the opening paragraph and while there's definitely more to talk about (including one of the biggest surprise turns I can remember in ...

They may not be three-dimensional, but IDW’s prequel comic "Star Trek Countdown to Darkness" provides the first look at Klingons since the deleted scenes in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek. Acting as a bridge between Star Trek and this year’s Star Trek Into Darkness, the fourth issue in the comic series promises a bit of bearded and bladed action from the fan-favorite alien race.

Star Trek Into Darkness, starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jon Cho, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Alice Eve and Anton Yelchin, opens May 17th. Hit the jump to check out the full Klingon image, plus a recap of our previous and ongoing coverage of Star Trek Into Darkness.

If you're looking forward to director J.J. Abrams Star Trek sequel (Star Trek Into Darkness), you're about to have a great day. That's because at a recent Star Trek event at Bad Robot, I landed an exclusive interview with co-screenwriter Damon Lindelof and got some great updates on one of the biggest movies of 2013! If you're curious about the new timeline, when the movie takes place, how writing the sequel was different than the first film, studio notes, how casting Benedict Cumberbatch changed the script, the way Abrams wanted to convey the Enterprise was this massive starship, Easter eggs, Redshirt deaths, and so much more, hit the jump.

If you'd like to read the full interview with Lindelof, it's further down the page. Here's a few of the highlights:

Abrams wanted people to feel like the Enterprise is a massive ship and one of the ways to accomplish this goal was connecting the sets so you could follow actors through the hallways and elevators without any cuts.
How there were four different ways to access the set, and you could walk a minute and a half to two minute before you actually got to the bridge.
They started filming with all the bridge scenes and it was like fast forwarding through the entire film.
Says about six months have passed since the events of the last movie.
Even though Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci are credited as the writers, J.J. Abrams and producer Bryan Burk are very involved in the creative vision of the ...

With all this recent Star Wars news flying around, the fans of Star Trek finally have something new to celebrate. This first poster for Paramount's sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, features a familiar symbol shaped by the destruction of surrounding buildings, with a mysterious dark figure standing upon a pile of rubble. Could this be the "one man weapon" the synopsis foretells?

Hit the jump to see the poster. Directed by J.J. Abrams, the film stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve, Peter Weller, Noel Clarke, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Star Trek Into Darkness opens in 3D and IMAX 3D on May 17, 2013.

Check out the eerily familiar* poster below, followed by the synopsis (click to embiggen):

Here’s the official synopsis for Star Trek Into Darkness:
In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
*The new poster has already been christened "Star Trek Into Dark Knight," as you ...

I try and heed the wise words of Conan O'Brien and resist the urge to be cynical. I really do. But while digging through our The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 coverage in anticipation of this week's post I stumbled across this poster for the film and all of my best laid plans went to waste. There is just no excuse for a franchise of its stature to have a poster that terrible. I'm far from an expert in graphic design, but mercy...I re-read Adam's original post several times hoping to find the sentence where he points out that the poster was the Grand Prize winner of Summit's "Design the Worst Damn Movie Poster Possible" contest. Sadly, there was no mention of such a contest. This was real and it made my heart hurt.
All cynicism aside, in this week's Top 5, The Twilight Saga comes to a merciful end with interviews and things of the like, Damon Lindelof's draft of the Prometheus script becomes available for your reading pleasure, news regarding the debuts of Star Trek Into Darkness' first trailer and first 9 minutes of the film surfaces, a handful of images and a video from the set of Thor: The Dark World make their way onto the Interwebs, and believe it or not, more news regarding Star Wars: Episode VII gets discussed. I trust you know where to find a brief recap and link to each.

The first clip for director J.J. Abrams’ sequel Star Trek Into Darkness has been released. It features star Zachary Quinto in costume as Spock, donning a protective suit as he is seen in the heart of a volcano. Fair warning: the clip is a literal blink of an eye since it's three frames long. Abrams and Conan O'Brien had a big laugh at the expense of all of us nerds (and tired bloggers) out there, but we'll take what we can get.

Hit the jump to watch the clip. The film stars Chris Pine, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve, Peter Weller, Noel Clarke, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Star Trek Into Darkness opens in 3D and IMAX on May 17th, 2013.

Watch the first "clip" of Star Trek Into the Darkness below (via Conan) and look for Quinto at the 1:51 mark. Or, better yet, just look at the screengrab I painstakingly caught for you:

Just a few short days ago, Chris Pine talked briefly about his experience on Star Trek 2, saying the film would keep its comedic elements, but the crew of the Starship Enterprise would face an even greater threat. Now, co-star Zachary Quinto has a few words of his own to share on the J.J. Abrams' sequel, calling it "bigger and bolder." Quinto had much more than that to say, and you can read it after the jump.

Star Trek 2, also starring Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Alice Eve and Benedict Cumberbatch opens May 17th, 2013.

Quinto recently spoke with The Wrap about his opinion on Star Trek 2, as well as a number of other upcoming projects for the actor. Here's Quinto's reaction in a nutshell:
"It was bigger. It was bolder, I think, than the first one, and that was pretty big and bold from my stand point. I’m really excited to see what they do with it."
The actor has wrapped filming his part, but was non-committal as far as plotlines go (not uncommon for an Abrams' flick):
"I feel like, you know, my work is done on the movie right now and until we have to go and promote it, then my work remains done and I let J.J. and his incredible team of people get in there and do the work that they need to do now."
While I'm sure a big-budget film like Star Trek 2 helps keep Quinto relevant, it doesn't seem to be his heart's desire:
“I feel very fulfilled, but I don't feel particularly attached to what the ...

While Chris Pine is currently shooting Jack Ryan in downtown Manhattan (you can see images of him and Kevin Costner here), he recently spoke out about the tone of Star Trek 2. Specifically, Pine was quick to mention that the J.J. Abrams sequel doesn't follow the rules set down by Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, which says a follow-up film should be "like the original, only darker." As the first Star Trek had its lighter moments (Pine's Kirk having an allergic reaction and being repeatedly injected by Bones), the sequel appears to keep the comedic element amidst a greater threat to Starfleet.

Also starring Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve and Benedict Cumberbatch, Star Trek 2 opens May 17th, 2013. Hit the jump to read what Pine had to say.

TotalFilm recently spoke to Pine about the upcoming Star Trek sequel and he was quick to establish the tone of the film by saying:
"We're not making Batman. That's not our deal."
Pine also commented on the inclusion of comedy in the film, against the backdrop of an imminent threat:
"There's comedy, which I think J.J. does a great job of, but, like the first one, there's some serious issues being dealt with. And I'd say the threat is even greater in this one."
It looks like the whole crew of the USS Enterprise will get to experience a bit more development this time around since Star Trek served to reintroduce the characters to the audience. As Pine says:
"The force [the Enterprise crew] are met with is much more frightening. It's relentlessly action-packed and in terms of character development it goes places ...

On the red carpet at tonight's Saturn Awards, I was able to interview Bruce Greenwood. We talked about J.J. Abrams Star Trek sequel, Robert Zemeckis' Flight, Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond the Pines with Ryan Gosling, Atom Egoyan's Devil's Knot (which also stars Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth and follows the true story of the West Memphis Three case), and more.

For fans of Star Trek, I asked Greenwood about filming with IMAX cameras, what the first few days were like on set, lens flairs, what it was like being on a fully constructed Enterprise bridge, and the size of Pike's role in the sequel. Hit the jump for what he had to say.

As usual, I've time indexed the interview so you can watch the parts that interest you. Look for a lot more video interviews from the Saturn Awards all weekend.

At this year's Comic-Con, I was able to sit down with Karl Uban for an extended video interview. Urban was at the Con to promote his upcoming hard-R adaptation of the comic book series Judge Dredd. For those unfamiliar with the film, Dredd is an adaption of the 2000AD comics character Judge Dredd, and it stars Urban, Olivia Thirlby, and Lena Headey. The film follows Dredd and rookie Judge Cassandra Anderson (Thirlby) fighting through a tower that's crawling with thugs in their attempt to bring down drug overlord Ma-ma (Headey). I actually got to see the film at Comic-Con and it's great.

During my interview with Urban we talked about the positive reviews for the film, the R rating, how he never takes off his helmet and how he got involved in the project, his process for getting ready for a role, his thoughts on how the film turned out and more. In addition, we also talked about the Star Trek sequel including working with the IMAX cameras, what his first few days on set were like, and being able to film on a fully-built Enterprise set, and more. Hit the jump to watch.

Karl Urban Time Index:

:32 Talks about the positive response at the preview screening of Dredd at Comic-Con.
1:20 Why were people reluctant to believe him that Dredd would never take his helmet off in the film?
2:45 Talks about how hard the R-rating is in the film and whether that was the intention from the get-go. Urban said he wasn’t as aware of how graphic it would be ...

Karl Urban came to Comic-Con with the intention of bringing some exclusive footage from Star Trek 2. He teased the release of the footage by the end of the week and delivered on his promise. However, it's not exactly what we expected to see. Urban was in hot water earlier for a possible slip up during an interview in which he may have revealed the villain in the upcoming untitled sequel. Writer Damon Lindelof reportedly said that he had no idea what the footage was that Urban was referencing and said the prankster was "off the reservation." Now, it's the end of Comic-Con and some Star Trek 2 footage has finally been released. Hit the jump to check it out (and keep your expectations in check as well).

If you're a fan of Star Trek 2, you're about to be mildly disappointed. However, if you're a fan of Urban, surfing, Cage the Elephant, pranks and green screens, you're about to have a laugh. The Star Trek 2 "footage" appears in the last ten seconds of the clip. Check the video out below and be sure to get caught up on all of our Comic-Con coverage here.

Opening this weekend is director Alex Kurtzman’s (co-writer of Star Trek and Cowboys & Aliens) feature debut, People Like Us. Inspired by true events from his own life, the film follows Sam (Chris Pine), a debt-ridden salesman who learns that his father has suddenly died, leaving behind a secret 30-year-old daughter (Elizabeth Banks) and a sizable amount of money meant for her. As he struggles with the decision of whether or not to share the money, he forges a relationship with his unsuspecting sister and her young son. For more on the film, here’s eight clips and my video interview with Michelle Pfeiffer (she plays Pine’s mother).

At the recent Los Angeles press day, I was able to speak with Pine and Banks. We talked about making the film, how the studios have moved away from making talking dramas, t-shirts, video games, how they prepare for their roles, and the sequels to Wet Hot American Summer and Star Trek. Hit the jump to watch.

What's the last video game they've played
Were they surprised when they got the script because studios have moved away from making talking dramas. Pine talks about how the project got made
How did the finished film compare to the original script
How did they prepare for their roles
Will we ever see a sequel to Wet Hot American Summer and what was it like on the first day of shooting the Star Trek sequel

This weekend, Collider got to participate in the press junket for People Like Us, a family dramedy inspired by true events from the life of writer/director Alex Kurtzman. The story follows Sam (Chris Pine), a twenty-something guy who learns that his father has suddenly died, leaving behind a secret 30-year-old daughter (Elizabeth Banks) that Sam never knew about, and he is forced to re-examine his own life and re-think everything he thought he knew about his family.

While we will post a number of interviews about the feature film closer to its June 29th release, we did want to share what actor Chris Pine had to say during roundtables about his work in the Star Trek sequel. He talked about the pressure that they feel now that the first film was such a success, how they all tried to do a really good job with the film, marrying a small character-driven drama with big action, and what it was like to work with the big, loud IMAX cameras for some of the scenes. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Question: How is the new Star Trek film?

CHRIS PINE: Oh, it’s good! What am I going to tell you? Those big films are scary things. There’s so much money behind those things. There’s that hype. You enter a machine. I’m just happy that the people behind it were such good, welcoming types. J.J. [Abrams] runs that ship. J.J. is a wonderful guy. What they bring to this kind of ...

Abrams could play whole scenes without a cut, and how they’re still in discussion about when the first official images or teaser trailer might be released. He also talked about what made he and business partner Roberto Orci want to sign on to write the sequel for The Amazing Spider-Man, how they just wrapped Ender’s Game (which takes place 70 years after a horrific alien war) and Now You See Me (about FBI agents who track a team of illusionists that pull off bank heists during their performances) as producers, and how excited they are to be rebooting Van Helsing and ...

With Prometheus opening this weekend, 20th Century Fox held a massive press junket in London last week where I was able to interview most of the cast and director Ridley Scott. Here’s my print interviews with Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, Michael Fassbender and Scott, and here's my on camera interviews with Charlize Theron and Guy Pearce and Logan Marshall-Green. For more on the film, here’s four clips and five minutes of behind-the-scenes footage and Matt's review.

During my interview with screenwriter Damon Lindelof we talked about getting to watch Ridley Scott direct, what he added to Jon Spaihts' original script, how he got an executive producer credit, the Star Trek sequel, and a bit on Lost. Hit the jump to watch.

Finally, I’m happy to report that Prometheus was great. Unlike most Hollywood movies that get watered down for mainstream acceptance, Prometheus is the type of big budget sci-fi that studios rarely make. I definitely recommend seeing it in a theater. Also, the 3D is fantastic. Here’s today’s interview.

Although the Untitled Star Trek Sequel is still almost a year away and doesn't even have an official title yet, screenwriter Damon Lindelof is looking toward a possible third movie. Lindelof is quick to say that a trilogy is not a "foregone conclusion," but he also expects to be involved in a third film if he should be so lucky. In a recent interview, Lindelof also talked about the character dynamics of the Star Trek crew, the logistics of shooting Star Trek 2 in 3D and IMAX and where how he thinks the franchise will move forward before he and director J.J. Abrams step aside to allow someone else's interpretation. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

We've posted some quotes from TrekMovie's recent interview with Lindelof below. Check out the highlights here or head on over to their site for the full interview. TrekMovie cleverly asked about the relationship between the characters as it applies to the length of time between the films. Lindelof, not to be out-clevered, responded in kind:
That is a very clever way of asking how much time has elapsed between the movies and that is not something we are commenting on at this point. What we can say is that the big difference with the fundamental crew dynamics as they existed in the first movie and as they roll into this one is the promise at the end of the first movie with James T. Kirk in his ...

While you may have to wait a while to find out who the antagonist is in J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek sequel, Star Trek the video game has put its villains front and center. The Gorn, a lizard-like race of alien warriors Hell-bent on conquering the galaxy, will terrorize Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock in the Paramount Pictures and Namco Bandai game. The cast of Star Trek, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, John Cho and Anton Yelchin will lend their voices to the game. The standalone co-op is based on Abrams' original Star Trek and continues the adventures of the iconic heroes. Players will control Kirk and Spock as they traverse across unexplored planets and alien battleships in an attempt to stop the Gorn in an original story written by BAFTA award-winner, Marianne Krawczyk (God of War) with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Plenty of new images and concept art await you, along with the fully detailed press release, after the jump. As this announcement was made as part of the ongoing Electronic Entertainment Expo, catch up on all of our previous coverage of E3 here.

Check out the full press release below, followed by new images and concept art from the Star Trek video game, coming to consoles early 2013. If you missed the game trailer, we've posted that below as well:

The Klingons pictured above are angry at being left on the cutting room floor of JJ Abrams' 2009 film, Star Trek; it's possible the director will make amends by including them in the as-of-yet untitled sequel, Star Trek 2. At the MTV Movie Awards last night, Abrams participated in a skit that misdirected your attention onto Jennifer Lawrence's hotness and Joel McHale's terrible archery skills. What you may have missed is an intentionally included screenshot of a Klingon warrior on a monitor behind Abrams. Reportedly, this isn't an old screenshot from the 2009 film, but an image that was added to the skit on purpose. Does it confirm that Klingons will be in the sequel? Maybe not, but it does confirm that Abrams likes to dick with us. Hit the jump to check out the image. (Update: HitFix has confirmed that the image is from the sequel and that it features a real live Klingon.)

The site that brought this to our attention is the same one that previously suggested the presence of Klingons in the sequel. In that same piece, it was also presented that Benedict Cumberbatch would in fact be playing the iconic (i-Khan-ic?) villain of Khan in the sequel. That presumption was recently refuted by star, Simon Pegg. So is the Klingon screencap just another red herring from Abrams or a clue into what we can expect to see in the sequel? Starring Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Alice Eve and Karl Urban, ...

Not only are Fringe fans thrilled that the show recently received a 13-episode, fifth and final season to wrap things up, but they are equally as excited for the return of actor Leonard Nimoy, as the ever mysterious William Bell, on the Season 4 finale. In “Brave New World Pt. 2,” the Fringe team is pushed to their breaking point as they desperately attempt to prevent a catastrophic event that threatens the lives of everyone.

During this recent interview to promote his return to the sci-fi drama, Leonard Nimoy talked about what enticed him to come back, his desire to explore characters with dimension, how long he’s been keeping his appearance a secret, and that he’d be open to returning again in Season 5. He also talked about his love of comedy, his willingness to take more acting roles if it’s something he’s intrigued by, and that he will not be appearing in the Star Trek sequel. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Question: What was it about the role of William Bell that enticed you to return from retirement to reprise the character?

LEONARD NIMOY: Well, it’s not just the role of William Bell. It’s the show. I think Fringe is a wildly imaginative show. The writers and the creators of the show, and the producers, are very bright and very theatrical. All the characters are fleshed out wonderfully, and the chemistry amongst the cast is terrific. I wanted to be part of this project. I enjoy the ...

If we can trust the Tweet, then Star Trek 2 and Zachary Quinto have officially wrapped. Quinto sent out an image and a brief message over Twitter today that would suggest the follow up to J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek has wrapped. After these set photos and video initially leaked earlier this year, we haven't see a whole lot out of the Starfleet camp (here's a hat). Quinto stays the course with this Tweet, as far as images go, but it's good to know the production has wrapped up. Maybe now we can get an official title. The Untitled Star Trek Sequel, starring Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, John Cho, Alice Eve, Peter Weller, Noel Clarke, and Benedict Cumberbatch. , opens May 17th, 2013. Hit the jump to see the image along with a recap of what we know about the sequel.

Check out the image and message left by @ZacharyQuinto earlier today:
zq. picture wrap. holy shit.

Yeah, admittedly it's not really much of anything. Also, as of the writing of this article, @simonpegg posted this confirmatory tweet:

Wind, reel and print. The countdown to May 2013 has begun.

So it's safe to assume Spock and Scotty can hang up the Starfleet uniforms for a little while. If you'd like to steer clear of spoilers, quit reading now. We're going to do a quick wrap-up of what we know about the sequel so far:

A new Star Trek comic series will bridge the original movie to the sequel.
