STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION – THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS Blu-ray Review

by     Posted 346 days ago

star-trek-next-generation-best-both-worlds-slice

At first glance, the stand-alone release of Star Trek: TNG - The Best of Both Worlds on Blu-ray looks like typical double dipping. The Season Three Blu-ray includes the first half of the two-part episode, but not the second, forcing Trekkies the world over to either pick this set up or wait until later this summer for Season Four to arrive. Why not get a few extra bucks out of the folks who can’t wait? The set certainly doesn’t justify any extra expense… but it does make an easy option for more casual fans who don’t want to invest in two expensive season collections. Jonathan Frakes Talks Season Three of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, Directing, The Best of Both Worlds, and More

Jonathan Frakes will always be associated with Star Trek, thanks to his role as Commander William Riker on The Next Generation. But that also led him to a career in directing, first with TNG and later with over 40 episodes of other series (including Leverage, Castle and Burn Notice). With the release of the third season of The Next Generation on Blu-ray – as well as a separate copy of The Best of Both Worlds – he sat down for a one-on-one interview with Collider.  Hit the jump to read the interview.

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION: SEASON 3 Blu-Ray, and The Best of Both Worlds, Parts I & II Blu-ray Reviews

by     Posted 351 days ago

star-trek-tng-season-3-blu-ray-cover-slice

Of all the tidbits on the new Blu-ray of Star Trek: The Next Generation Season Three, the tastiest comes from writer Michael Piller. He planned to leave the show at the end of the season until Gene Roddenberry himself appealed for him to stay. Before that happened, he conceived of one hell of a final act: a dilemma for the crew of the Enterprise so insurmountable that even he didn’t have the slightest idea how they were going to get out of it. Of course, he came back and subsequently came up with a corker of a solution. But without that go-for-broke fearlessness – without the desire to write a beginning that no ending could possibly match – we wouldn’t have had The Best of Both Worlds. And not only TNG, but television in general would have lost one of its unquestioned high points. Hit the jump for the full review.

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION Season 2 Blu-ray Review

“Another man would have been humiliated to say those words,” Q (John De Lancie) grudgingly concedes to Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). “Another man would have rather died than ask for help.” He’s speaking at the end of  “Q Who” after Picard has swallowed his pride and asked for aid during the first fateful encounter with the Borg. It’s not hard to figure out who Q meant by “another man.” Faced with the same scenario, James T. Kirk would have gone down guns blazing… and likely doomed the universe as a result. Picard is most assuredly not Kirk; in that moment, The Next Generation stepped decisively out of the original Star Trek’s shadow to stand beside it as an equal. Hit the jump for my full review.

Star Trek: The Next Generation finally comes to Blu-ray, and if you don’t think that’s cause for rejoicing, you don’t have many Trekkies in your life. The series grappled with significant problems in making the leap to an HD format, thanks to its copious effects shots created in an era when high definition simply didn’t exist. They’ve finally cracked the code and the new Season One Blu-ray reaps handsome rewards as a result…. with a few notable hiccups. Hit the jump for my full review.

Comic-Con: Blu-Ray Producers Panelists Talk Special Features and Quick Turnarounds

Special features are a highlight of buying a home video these days for myself and many others.  Sometimes it can make the purchase worthy of the monetary value itself.  You can read as much as you want, but nothing compares to a visual medium explaining, showing, and telling you about a favorite film or television show.  Earlier today at Comic-Con I had the pleasure of sitting in during a special feature discussion in Room 5AB.  The panel began with moderator Bill Hunt introducing his compatriots at Digital Bits, Todd Doogan and Dr. Adam Jahnke.  He also went down the panel further, introducing Charles de Lauzirika (Prometheus, The Amazing Spider-Man), Cliff Stephenson (The Hunger Games), Robert Meyer Burnett (Star Trek: The Next Generation-Seasons One and Two), and Warner Home Video’s former senior VP of theatrical catalog marketing and current head of digital distribution, George Feltenstein.  Legal battles, film restoration, and the struggles to turn around a DVD and Blu-ray with special features already included before a film even hits theaters were among the topics discussed.  Hit the jump for more.

The seminal first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation is coming to Blu-ray on July 24.  Although there will be no new special effects, the trailer shows the vast difference between what was previously available and the cleaned-up Blu-ray image.  The full details including special features were revealed today in a press release.  There discs are loaded with promos, featurettes, archival footage, interviews, and a gag reel.  (I’ll bet Patrick Stewart and LeVar Burton were an absolute hoot on the set of the Starship Enterprise.) STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION Blu-ray Trailer

Star-Trek-The-Next-Generation-Blu-ray-trailer-slice

Last month we reported that the Gene Roddenberry series Star Trek: The Next Generation would be getting a long-overdue high definition makeover for its Blu-ray debut later this year. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, all 178 episodes will eventually be released, but in the meantime fans will have to make due with a three-episode special called, Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Next Level. It will include the feature-length version of the pilot, as well as the season three episode “Sins of the Father” and the season five episode “The Inner Light.” The Next Level will hit shelves on January 31, 2012 and has a suggested retail price of $21.99. For a look at how the original version compares to the new hi-def re-mastering, hit the jump.

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION Season One Blu-ray Hits Stores Late 2012; No New Special Effects Added

by     Posted 2 years, 128 days ago

While the original Star Trek series has been enjoying a Blu-ray release for awhile now, the second most popular extension of the sci-fi canon, Star Trek: The Next Generation, hasn’t been so lucky. Since the series was originally shot on film and transferred to videotape for editing episodes, crafting HD versions of the entire series is quite an intensive task. However, the series will finally get its due diligence in high definition as all 178 episodes over seven seasons will finally be available on Blu-ray starting with the first season hitting shelves later in 2012. However, fans looking for a taste of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) will get a but of a teaser on January 31st with CBS releasing Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Next Level, a single Blu-ray disc that will have the feature-length pilot, Encounter at Farpoint, and the “fan favorite” episodes The Inner Light and Sins of the Father. More after the jump.

And since CBS is taking the original uncut film negatives in order to craft this high definition transfer, this also means that series will eventually hit TV and digital platforms in HD as well. As was expected when we first reported on this story back in September, the special effects shot on film will not simply be upconverted, but rather painstakingly recompositioned for the best possible quality.
