There was good news to go around this weekend as each of the four major studio releases opened to over $20 million.  That is an almost unheard of feat on any weekend, let alone a non-holiday-enhanced weekend in February. 8 Big Miracle $3,860,000 $13.1
9 The Descendants $3,500,000 $70.7
10 Underworld Awakening $2,500,000 $58.9

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, I can’t help but think that Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum’s The Vow is Hollywood’s way of saying, “We know you suck at planning romantic Valentine’s dates, so why not pay us to take care of that for you?”. And you know what? They’re right. I’ve already reserved a couple of tix for the pic and, just like that, I’m basically a romance deity (Note: “Romance deity” may be a slight exaggeration”).

All romantic escapades aside, this week’s “Top 5″ brings you all of our John Carter set visit coverage, a plethora of Star Wars items, a new trailer for director Marc Webb‘s The Amazing Spider-Man, the first trailer and poster from Jeremy Renner‘s The Bourne Legacy, and all of Super Bowl XLVI’s movie ads in one place. You can find a brief recap and link to each after the jump.

Meanwhile, the 3D reissue of The Phantom Menace did not embarrass itself on Friday but it didn’t blow away early expectations either. Details after the jump.

Title Friday Total
1 The Vow $15,400,000 $15.4
2 Safe House $13,800,000 $13.8
3 Phantom Menace 3D $8,700,000 $8.7

With the release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace 3D this weekend, Twentieth Century Fox recently hosted a press junket at Skywalker Ranch and Lucasfilm.  In an effort to promote the experience for the next generation, my seven year-old daughter, Cyan, interviewed four people who helped bring George Lucas’ vision to life.  Her final interview was with Joel Aron, CG Supervisor for Star Wars: The Clone Wars the animated series.  They discussed how Darth Maul could come back if he’d been cut in half, the most rewarding part of working on Star Wars, who his favorite character is, his Sith name, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

George Lucas Addresses Changes to STAR WARS; Maintains Greedo Shot First

by     Posted 2 years, 73 days ago

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace opens yet again this Friday, and the film is destined to make even more money because all the marketing for the 3D re-release has been aimed directly at kids. Even the junket interviews were conducted by children (you can watch our interviews here, here, and here). George Lucas hasn’t given too many interviews regarding the 3D release, but one hit today that’s sure to grind fanboy gear. During the discussion, Lucas defends the edits he’s made to the Star Wars saga, and specifically addresses CGI Yoda and why Greedo shot first. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

We’re only a few weeks away from the 3D re-release of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace in theaters. The event hopefully marks the beginning of the theatrical re-release of all the films in the Star Wars saga (given that the first few are financially successful), and in anticipation of the theatrical exhibition, Star Wars Insider Magazine is releasing a celebratory issue. The magazine has been kind enough to provide Collider with an exclusive preview at what they have in store, giving us a peek at some never-before-seen storyboards from Episode I involving a battle sequence between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn and a slew of droids. AMC Theaters to Offer Podracer 3D Glasses and Fighter Pod for Upcoming STAR WARS: EPISODE I – THE PHANTOM MENACE 3D Release

by     Posted 2 years, 90 days ago

As the 3D re-release of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace looms closer, Lucasfilm is pulling out all the stops to ensure that fans burned by their first Episode I viewing experience will happily fork over more money to see the movie again. It’s already known that Episodes IV, V, and VI won’t be re-released in 3D unless Episodes I, II, and III are successful, and now they’re throwing Star Wars 3D glasses at us. AMC Theaters announced today that during opening weekend, fans will received an all-new Hasbro Star Wars Fighter Pod with the purchase of each 3D ticket, while supplies last.

Furthermore, 10 AMC theaters across the country will be hosting event screenings at which fans will receive exclusive Anakin Skywalker Podracer 3D glasses with each ticket purchase. These 10 theaters will also play host to a LEGO feature area, Darth Maul face-painting (at last!), and more. Hit the jump to find out which theaters will be holding the event screenings. Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace opens in 3D February 10th.

New Posters for STAR WARS: EPISODE I – THE PHANTOM MENACE 3D, GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGANCE and WEST OF MEMPHIS

by     Posted 2 years, 101 days ago

We’ve got quite a few new posters to share with you today. First up are five new posters for the 3D re-release of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. They’re pretty fantastic, as a few of them run off the theme of a lightsaber. The Darth Maul lightsaber one is sufficiently badass, though there’s a quote-laden one highlighting Maul’s face that kicks considerably less ass. We’ve also got a new international poster for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance that puts star Nicolas Cage on full display.

Finally, we’ve got the poster premiere for Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh’s West Memphis Three documentary West of Memphis. Though the three wrongly convicted men are now free, Jackson and Walsh are working hard to bring justice to the case and solve the 18-year-old triple murder. The poster is excellent and brings their message across loud and clear. West of Memphis will screen at the Sundance Film Festival. Hit the jump to check out the posters.

New Posters for STAR WARS: EPISODE I – THE PHANTOM MENACE 3D and MIRROR MIRROR

by     Posted 2 years, 125 days ago

We’ve got a couple of new posters to share with you today. First up is an international poster for the 3D re-release of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menance. There’s not much to it, as it’s basically just Yoda getting his stare on. Apparently overseas Yoda is the big draw to get people to see Episode I again, while in the U.S. it’s Darth Maul and pod racers. Additionally, we’ve got a poster for Tarsem Singh’s Snow White film Mirror Mirror. Every new piece of marketing material for the flick makes it less and less appealing. The trailer was beyond strange, and this poster ups the “fluffy” factor even more. Maybe kids will respond, but at this point I don’t see teenagers/adults flocking to this Snow White tale.

Hit the jump to check out the posters. Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D opens February 10th, 2012, and Mirror Mirror is slated for March 16th, 2012.

Today is a good day. The Cardinals are World Series champions, trick r’ treaters will soon be out in full force, and I’ve got a night of horror films to look forward to. Once a year, my fiancée agrees to watch a few pics of the scary variety (or at least Halloween themed ones, i.e. Ernest Scared Stupid) with me in the hopes that I won’t ask her to partake in them again until the following Halloween weekend. Last year’s highlights included Drag Me to Hell and Trick r’ Treat. This year is shaping up to be Tobe Hooper-heavy with Poltergeist and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre possibly making the cut. Like I said, today is a good day.

Before you dive into whatever Halloween festivities may await you, I hope you’ll take a few minutes and check out what this week’s “Top 5″ has to offer. In this installment you’ll find the first trailer for Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D, a new trailer for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and interviews for this weekend’s openers In Time, Anonymous and The Rum Diary. Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each.

First Trailer for STAR WARS EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE 3D [Updated]

by     Posted 2 years, 182 days ago

star-wars-episode-i-the-phantom-menace-slice

As you most likely already know, all six Star Wars films are being re-released in theaters in 3D, starting with Episode I: The Phantom Menace (ie. you have to sit through the prequels before seeing The Empire Strikes Back on the big screen again). The first trailer for Episode I has been released, and it does a pretty good job of selling the re-release. It begins with scenes from all six films in a tiny box, in order to remind you that even though you just bought the complete saga on Blu-ray, your TV is incredibly small and insufficient when compared to a movie theater. The actual scenes from Episode I look fine, and the pod-racing scene should be pretty spectacular. Unfortunately, the 3D doesn’t necessarily enhance Jake Lloyd.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace 3D opens on February 10th, 2012.

I’m writing you this afternoon less than an hour removed from my first trip to the little slice of Americana that is a Bass Pro Shop. For those unfamiliar with the chain, imagine a store with Wal-Mart-esque square footage that devotes itself entirely to all things outdoor. While I’ll admit to being a little out of my element (okay, way out of my element), even an outdoor novice like myself can relish the opportunity to have their picture taken with a taxidermic grizzly bear. For those of you waiting for me to somehow make a connection between my Bass Pro experience and this week’s “Top 5″, this ellipsis is about as close as you’re going to get…

…In this week’s installment you’ll find the much-anticipated first trailer from writer/director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, the first poster for Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D, some new set photos from Man of Steel and The Dark Knight Rises, and interviews for both The Thing and Craig Brewer’s Footloose. Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each.
