Star Wars: The Force Awakens recently wrapped filming, but the saga will continue to film at London’s Pinewood Studios.  THR reports that the first Star Wars spin-off, which will be directed by Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards, is set to shoot at the prestigious studio in 2015.  At the annual CBI conference in London, Pinewood Shepperton CEO Ivan Dunleavy announced, “The seventh Star Wars movie just finished shooting at Pinewood. And I’m delighted to be able to tell you that a new Star Wars movie is already booked in,” and although he didn’t specify which one, THR says it will be the first spin-off, which is due in theaters on December 16, 2016.

Pinewood has a strong relationship with Disney, and also plays host to Marvel movies on a regular basis. They recently housed Avengers: Age of Ultron and currently have Ant-Man at their new Atlanta studio.  But Pinewood goes back to a galaxy far, far away, they will give studio space to Sony/MGM’s James Bond 24, a franchise so engrained in Pinewood’s history that there’s been a 007 stage since 1976.

While our attention is mainly on Star Wars: Episode VII (as it should be), we have to keep in mind that in addition to the sequels, we’re also getting spin-offs.  Personally, I wish these spin-offs would expand the universe with new characters and new worlds, but early rumors indicate that the focus will be on established characters such as Han Solo, Boba Fett, and Yoda.  Now another spin-off rumor has surfaced, and it claims that an Obi-Wan Kenobi will have his own movie.  “For the spin-off movies they were initially going to stay away from any Jedi or Sith characters,” reports Making Star Wars, “But I’m hearing now that because of the popularity of Obi-Wan (fans recently voting for him on the official website etc) that an art team is now working with a writer on concepts for an Obi-Wan movie.”

The Star Wars saga doesn’t stop at the six movies.  It’s been able to feed fans for decades with novels, comic books, video games, and TV shows.  However, none of this material will be used when it comes to the upcoming films.  Screenwriter Simon Kinberg, who is working on one of the Star Wars spin-offs as well as the upcoming animated series Star Wars Rebels, tells IGN, ” You know, it’s not off-limits, and it’s certainly inspiring — I’m working on an animated show for [Lucasfilm] as well, Star Wars: Rebels, that will take inspiration from everywhere, but — I know for the movies, the canon is the canon, and the canon is the six films that exist.”

Hit the jump for Kinberg talking about the Star Wars expanded universe.  Star Wars: Episode VII opens December 18, 2015.
