Ice Cube Talks the Success of RIDE ALONG, RIDE ALONG 2, 22 JUMP STREET, and More; Says STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON Starts Filming in July

With director Tim Story’s comedy Ride Along hitting DVD/Blu-ray this week, I recently landed an exclusive interview with Ice Cube to help promote the release.  As most of you know, the film stars Kevin Hart as a fast-talking aspiring police officer who must team up with his girlfriend’s (Tika Sumpter) brother, a hot-tempered cop (Cube), to prove that he’s worthy of being her husband.   While Universal was obviously hoping for a hit, I don’t think anyone expected the film to make $150 million at the worldwide box office.  But it definitely explains why the studio is quickly moving forward with a sequel, which is already slated for a January 15, 2016 release.

During the interview, Cube talked about the success of the film, why he wanted to make the project, the sequel, if it’s weird that he’s played so many police officers, what he recommends people do when they visit L.A., Straight Outta Compton (which he says is casting now and will start shooting this July), 22 Jump Street, doing a voice for the Guillermo del Toro-produced The Book of Life, the status of the Friday and xXx franchises, and more.  Hit the jump for our Ice Cube interview.

Ice Cube Talks STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON Movie Saying the NWA Biopic Is Scheduled to Film This July

During a recent interview for the Blu-ray release of Ride Along, Ice Cube gave Steve an update on the progress of the Straight Outta Compton movie.  It looks like the N.W.A. biopic has been casting for the last six months and is currently scheduled to start filming this July.  The scope that they’re aiming for in this picture is ambitious, as it tells the story of the iconic hip hop group’s inception in the mid 80s, and continues up until the death of founding member Eazy-E in 1995.  Cube is producing the film along with fellow founder Dr. Dre; F. Gary Gray will direct.  Hit the jump for more on Straight Outta Compton.

F. Gary Gray Drops Out of CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 Race; Will Likely Direct STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON

And then there were two (technically three).  A couple weeks ago, we reported that the frontrunners to direct Captain America 2 were F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job), George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau), and television directors Anthony and Joseph Russo (Community).  Today, Deadline reports that Gray has dropped out of the race to focus on helming the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton.  Gray doesn’t officially have the Compton job, but Deadline says it’s likely he’ll get the gig.  No offense to NWA fans, but I’m glad Gray is no longer in the running for Captain America 2.  He was the least interesting of the frontrunners since he’s more of a journeyman director.  While Nolfi has only directed one feature film, and the Russos have directed none, they’re wild cards, and I don’t know what to expect either way. [Correction: The Russos previously directed Welcome to Collinwood and You, Me & Dupree]

Captain America 2 is set for release on April 4, 2014.  The movie will pick up where The Avengers leaves off.

WORLD TRADE CENTER Screenwriter Going STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON with NWA Biopic

by     Posted 4 years, 135 days ago

Screenwriter Andrea Berloff (World Trade Center) is penning Straight Outta Compton, which is the tale of seminal rap group NWA.  I’ll let THR give the brief overview of Non-White-People with Attitude (that’s what I’ve been told the “N” stands for):

NWA included drug dealer turned label founder Eazy-E, young disc jockey Dr. Dre and the politically bent Ice Cube, plus MC Ren and DJ Yella. Their 1988 groundbreaking album, “Straight Outta Compton”, introduced gangsta rap to the world and triggered sales of 9 million units.  Naturally, egos and jealousies surfaced along with violence, charges of anti-Semitism, misogyny and homophobia.  Eazy-E’s death from AIDS caused the ex-members to reconcile.

Hit the jump for more on the story.  Oh, and Berloff is a white woman penning what could arguably be called a “black-themed” project (the side arguing it isn’t would be comprised of dumbasses).  You can read my thoughts on that after the jump as well.
