As part of The CW portion of the TCA Press Tour, network president Mark Pedowitz took some time to discuss current programming, upcoming series and shows in various development stages. During the interview, he talked about how The Carrie Diaries came about, what attracted the network to Cult, the genesis for the possible The Vampire Diaries spin-off about the Originals (with Joseph Morgan and Phoebe Tonkin, and set in New Orleans), that The Selection and Wonderland are still in pilot contention, how the Wonder Woman project Amazon is progressing, their interest in other DC Comics characters, that they are no longer pursuing a Battle Royale series, and how they feel about current shows Supernatural, Beauty and the Beast, Nikita and Hart of Dixie. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

How did The Carrie Diaries come about?

MARK PEDOWITZ: That was a book that was being tracked by Thom Sherman and my predecessor, Dawn Ostroff. It became available. Mike Lombardo at HBO, with Peter Roth’s help at Warner Bros., found a way to get this going. We got ahold of Candace Bushnell. Amy Harris joined us. And we thought it was a great take on what happens, as an origination story, in terms of Carrie Bradshaw, who’s just an iconic character. And having it set in the ‘80s gave it a different take on the whole thing.

With shows like Smallville, Supernatural and Arrow on your network, did Cult speak to you, along those lines?

PEDOWITZ: Well, when I walked into ...

As part of the TCA Press Tour presentation for FX, President & General Manager of FX Networks John Landgraf took some time to talk about their current hit series, new shows, and what they see as possibilities for their future line-up. During the interview, he spoke about the importance of establishing trust with your showrunners, having strong female leads at the center of their upcoming drama series The Americans and The Bridge, what he’s heard about casting for Season 3 of American Horror Story, the plan for the next 90 episodes of Anger Management and the tweaking they’ve done to the show, how he sees It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia having a 10-season run, and broadcaster responsibility, in regard to violence on television. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

FX seems to have a great relationship with their showrunners. What is the secret to having a show that does well, and giving them the freedom that they want, to tell the story that they want?

JOHN LANDGRAF: I think maybe the most important thing that I or anybody at my company and any of my colleagues can do is establish a trusting, productive, collaborative relationship with creative people. I think that’s job one. And that can’t be a passive relationship because you have serious and difficult things to talk about with somebody who does a show on your air. You’re going to have bad moments, and you’re going to have fights and arguments. I don’t think I ever ...

At the TCA Press Tour presentation for Netflix, Arrested Development show creator Mitch Hurwitz and most of the actors got together to discuss the new chapter for the comedy series, which includes 14 new episodes being released in May. Fans of the show have been anxiously awaiting the project, since talk of a movie started, some time ago. Instead of that movie, for the time being, they will get to see stories focusing on different cast members for each episode, at times overlapping with other stories, and this time even including some nudity from one of the principal actors.

During the panel itself and giving some extra time for a bit after, producer/writer Mitch Hurwitz talked about how he didn’t realize how big of a challenge it would be to finally get this going, that fan fiction has scooped possible storylines, how they had to learn to not be precious with the material, bringing actor Michael Cera into the writers’ room this time, that they’re trying to make the episodes just under half an hour while they’re in the post-production process, how the movie is in a bit of limbo until they see how the new episodes do, that there are things that harken back to the old incarnation of the show but that he also feels new viewers will find these episodes very accessible, and how he hopes to have extras available on Netflix at some point. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Fox has unveiled a few newsworthy items during the Television Critics Association winter press tour, including the announcement of a new series by M. Night Shyamalan, Wayward Pines, which the network says should be evocative of Twin Peaks (how many times have we heard that before?) Additionally, a new series called Blood Brothers is also on the slate, focusing on a true story of the West Point Class of 1861.

A few more points of interest:

The networks' veteran procedural Bones has been renewed for its ninth (ninth!) season.
Seth Rogen (Knocked Up) is set to to guest-star on an upcoming episode of The Mindy Project as Mindy's "first kiss" (The show returns February 19th at 9:30pm)
Fox is unveiling "Animation Domination High-Def," a new bloc for "alternative" comedy (translation: more super short-form, Adult Swim kinda stuff)

For more on these items and the new series, hit the jump.

Shyamalan's series Wayward Pines will be based on the best-selling novel "Pines" (which evidently were not wayward yet). Essentially, an Agent Cooper-like character (Secret Service agent Ethan Burke) arrives in the sleepy town trying to find two missing federal agents. Dead. Wrapped in plastic. But (in the network's words), "instead of answers, his investigation only turns up more questions."

As for Blood Brothers, it seems a bit like Band of Brothers: Civil War Edition. Which sounds pretty great. Except this isn't HBO. Cautious optimism suggestion.

"Animation Domination High-Def" could potentially be a winner, though. So far the network has order three quarter-hour animated series, including Axe Cop, based on the ...

As part of the TCA Press Tour presentation for NBC, Chairman of NBC Entertainment Robert Greenblatt and President of Entertainment Jennifer Salke took some time to talk about their comedies and dramas, both with their present line-up and what’s to come. During this interview, they touched on when viewers might expect to see Hannibal (from show creator Bryan Fuller and starring Hugh Dancy as Special Agent Will Graham and Mads Mikkelsen as Dr. Hannibal Lecter), how they’re going into production on Dracula (with Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the lead role) and pre-production on the Blackbeard series Crossbones (from Luther creator Neil Cross), how they approach violence in their programming, their upcoming series with Michael J. Fox, their approach to keeping people aware of Revolution, after a four-month hiatus, and how they feel about the changes to Season 2 of Smash. Check out what they had to say after the jump.

Question: Can you preview what’s to come for NBC?

ROBERT GREENBLATT: We have four major scripted series debuting within the next four weeks, with the premieres of Deception, 1600 Penn and Do No Harm, and the return of the second season of Smash. Beyond that, we also have Hannibal and Save Me, which might hit the schedule before the season is over, pending how everything else plays out. And we go into production on Dracula, with Jonathan Rhys Meyers, in a couple of months, with that show being ready for Fall. Plus, we’re in early pre-production on Crossbones, our big Blackbeard series ...

BrandX with Russell Brand features the British comedian’s honest and unfiltered point of view on current events, worldwide politics and popular culture. After a somewhat experimental series of six episodes, FX has ordered another seven installments that will return sometime in October, likely behind the new seasons of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The League.

While at the FX portion of the TCA Press Tour, Collider got the opportunity to participate in both the show’s panel and a 1-on-1 interview with the always outrageous and often thoughtful Russell Brand, in which he talked about what the experience of this show has been like, whether it’s been more fun or more work than he expected, what he enjoys about having such honest interactions with his audience, the creative changes he’s planning to make with the show, who he would like to exchange lives with for a day, and what he would do, if he could be President of the United States. He also talked about working with Diablo Cody on her directorial debut, his career doing family films, and how it’s been difficult to book time to do his voice work for Despicable Me 2 because they keep wanting to record during his yoga class, but that he will definitely be in it, eventually. After making what he referred to as a premature decision, with Fox’s cancellation of the ambitious sci-fi drama Terra Nova and the Netflix deal not going through, actor Jason O’Mara immediately pursued a role in the CBS drama series Vegas, starring Dennis Quaid, Michael Chiklis and Carrie-Anne Moss. Premiering on September 25th, Vegas is a 1960's period piece inspired by the true story of Ralph Lamb (Quaid), a cowboy turned sheriff of Las Vegas, and Vincent Savino (Chiklis), a Chicago mob fixer.

While at the CBS portion of the TCA Press Tour, Jason O’Mara shared some thoughts about the creative issues with Terra Nova, how he felt about the cancellation of the series, that the showrunners had plans for what they could do with Season 2, and that he would have definitely stuck with it, if it had moved to Netflix. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

How did you feel about the cancellation of Terra Nova?

JASON O’MARA: We were just finding our feet. I think we proved that, by the season finale. There was a lot more story to tell and I think there was an audience to watch it. Certainly internationally, the show went down extremely well with huge numbers. Domestically, it didn’t quite get there. Creatively, we probably could have made some slightly better decisions, half-way through. But, that’s par for the course with such an ambitious series. We needed more than 13 episodes, I think. Honestly, we were on the bubble, and we were ...

As part of the TCA Press Tour presentation for ABC, President of ABC Entertainment Paul Lee took some time to talk about their new Fall line-up of comedies and dramas, and some of their already existing series. During the interview, he spoke about what appealed to him about the new drama series Nashville (starring Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere), what they see for the future of Shawn Ryan’s drama series Last Resort, multi-camera versus single-camera comedies at the network, what happened with the Gotham pilot, and his thoughts on serialized storytelling. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Question: In regard to Nashville, did you know country music, growing up in England, or did you not find it until you got to the States? What were your impressions of country music, as you found it?

PAUL LEE: I used to love country music. I’ve loved American music, like most of us Brits, since I was a kid. I used to make documentaries about folk and country musicians. I made one about Woody Guthrie, a folk musician who I loved. We’re immensely proud of the CMAs. We think it’s fantastic. And country music is really having its moment. There are so many crossover artists. But, I think Nashville transcends country music. I think it is one of those great dramas. I watched Dallas, when I was a kid. Was I a fan of oil? I don’t think so. I have to say that T-Bone Burnett has done amazing music for ...

Returning for Season 3 in September in the UKand January 2013 on Masterpiece on PBS, the hit drama series Downton Abbey will see wrenching social changes, romantic intrigues, and personal crises that grip the majestic English country estate, now that the Great War is over and a long-awaited engagement is on. Written and created by Julian Fellowes, the show has become a worldwide cultural phenomenon, breaking records with all of its nominations for the Primetime Emmy Awards.

While at the PBS portion of the TCA Summer Press Tour, Fellowes talked about how this season will be about the recovery from the war, the advantages of being able to create a story set in the past but with a modern mind-set in writing it, what actress Shirley MacLaine will add to this season, how amused he is by the people who wrongly point out inaccuracies in the show, and how far he’d like to take the story. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Question: Last season was considerably darker with the war, but now there is an impending marriage. Would you classify this season as a little brighter and more cheerful, or is it just as dark?

JULIAN FELLOWES: We like a few laughs. This season is about the recovery from the war. The war brought a tremendous disruption to England and took many, many families, of all sorts. There were those few years when people were trying to decide if the world was going to go back and be ...

As part of the TCA Press Tour presentation for NBCUniversal, Chairman of NBC Entertainment Robert Greenblatt and President of Entertainment Jennifer Salke, who’s in charge of scripted programming, took some time to talk about their slate of comedies and dramas, both with their present line-up and for the Fall season. During this interview, they addressed the upcoming season of Community, why only 13 episodes and why on Friday night, the affects of the new showrunner, and whether it could get another season or more episodes to this next season. They also talked about their hopes for Go On (with Matthew Perry) and The New Normal (from Ryan Murphy), why they passed The Mindy Project on to Fox, and what fans of the series can expect from Season 2 of Smash. Check out what they had to say after the jump.

Question: Can you address the Community situation. Why only 13 episodes, and why Friday night?

ROBERT GREENBLATT: Well, I think we’re going to transition with our comedy programming, trying to broaden the audience and broaden what the network does. Those Thursday comedies, which the critics love and we love, tend to be a bit more narrow than we’d ultimately like, as we go forward. And Community is a show that has been always on the bubble, but we decided to bring it back again and see what a fourth season will do for us. The reason that we did 13 episodes of that, and a couple of our other shows, is because we ...

Question: How did you finally get these four half-hour comedies -- New Girl, Raising Hope, Ben and Kate and The Mindy Project -- together on one night?

KEVIN REILLY: Well, since I took this job at FOX, I’ve been talking about my desire to get our comedy brand going again, and we’ve had a mixed bag on that. Last year is when it really all started to come together, with New Girl joining Raising Hope. And I’d say that we finally have the development that feels like it fits.

We developed Ben and Kate internally. We have a close relationship with the producers of that show, who were working on New Girl. Dana Fox was a consultant on New Girl, and Jake Kasdan directed the pilot for both and was executive-producing both. So, we had our eye ...

The Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour kicked off on July 21st with the PBS portion, and Collider will be covering all of the networks and cable channels through August 3rd. While there, I felt very fortunate to speak with acclaimed and accomplished actor/director, and recently knighted, Sir Kenneth Branagh for his BBC television series Wallander, adapted from Swedish novelist Henning Mankell’s Kurt Wallander detective novels.

We will run what Branagh had to say about the third series of films, premiering on PBS in September, closer to their air date, but wanted to share what he said about the next Jack Ryan film – an origin story that allows the audience to understand how Jack Ryan (played by Chris Pine) develops into a CIA analyst – which he is both directing and playing the villain in. In this exclusive interview with Collider, he talked about the appeal of taking on such a strong and complicated character, how he came to the decision to both direct and star in the film, that he expects to shoot from the beginning of September until Christmas, that he thinks it’s unlikely he will shoot in either IMAX or 3D, and more. In addition, he talked about his desire to do an IMAX 3D Shakespeare film. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Collider: Is the Jack Ryan film the next thing that you’ll be doing, and what was the appeal of taking on a villain?

KENNETH BRANAGH: Variety is very, very good. Going from ...

Lena Dunham’s indie feature Tiny Furniture put her on the map, as an actress, writer and director. Now, HBO is adding executive producer (along with Judd Apatow and Jenni Konner) to her resume, for the new comedy series Girls, which premieres on April 15th. Following the lives of four very different young women in their 20s, in New York City, Hannah (Dunham), Marnie (Allison Williams), Jessa (Jemima Kirke) and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) are trying to figure life out. Even with all of the humiliations and triumphs, they’re still not sure what they want, from boys, from each other or from themselves, and things just aren’t getting any clearer.

During the HBO portion of the TCA Press Tour, co-executive producers Lena Dunham and Judd Apatow talked about how close these characters are to real life, what it’s like to produce a show for HBO, balancing this often awkward and embarrassing journey with some hope for the characters, and how, as the series progressing, all of the characters will be equally punished. Apatow also said that they would see if there’s an idea worth doing, before making a decision about Bridesmaids 2. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

Before reading the interview, here's the trailer for the show:

Question: Lena, how close did you get to this character, in real life? Was there a point where you were in New York and didn’t have money and didn’t know what you were going to do?

LENA DUNHAM: Really close. It’s closely based on ...

On FX’s drama series Justified, actress Joelle Carter plays Ava Crowder, the woman behind enigmatic bad boy Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins). Now that the two are right in the thick of Harlan’s criminal activities Ava has chosen to go all-in, standing beside and supporting her man.

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour, Joelle Carter sat down with Collider for this exclusive interview about how her character has been evolving, finding her place among all of the men in Harlan, what Ava’s goals are now, working with both Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins, wanting to continue to do work of equal quality, her desire to direct, and the hope that she’ll get to do some comedy. Check out what she had to say after the jump:

Collider: How has Ava Crowder been evolving this season?

JOELLE CARTER: Last season was a growing period for Ava, especially after being shot. She’s really dedicating herself to her journey with Boyd (Walton Goggins). She’s in a different place. I believe she’s ready to stand up and be the best woman beside her man that she can be. I believe Boyd is her North now, so whatever vision he has, it’s her duty to try to see it come clear. She’s surprising herself, as I am being surprised by the writing and the development, in my own mind, of Ava and what actually is inside her and the strength that lies in there. What she’s capable of is going to surprise people, as it’s surprising me.

As Ava ...

Developed by Graham Yost and starring Timothy Olyphant, Justified is based on the works of crime novelist Elmore Leonard. As Season 2 ended the Bennett family’s hold over Harlan County and marked the return of Raylan’s (Olyphant) old nemesis/friend Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) to the criminal life, Season 3 picked up with him finding out that he and his crew aren’t the only ones making a play to rule the Harlan underworld. Now, Raylan finds himself dealing with a pregnant ex-wife (Natalie Zea) while facing off against dirty politicians, a mysterious man named Limehouse (Mykelti Williamson), and an enterprising criminal from the Motor City (Neal McDonough).

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour, showrunner/executive producer/writer Graham Yost talked to Collider for this exclusive interview about where this season is headed, how the new criminal element will affect things, that he’s hoping to get Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family) and Patton Oswalt (Young Adult) on as guest stars since they’re both big fans of the show, the pressure of not repeating yourself while living up to what fans expect, and how far ahead they plan out where things are going with the story. Check out what he had to say after the jump:
Collider: What can you say about where things are headed, for the rest of Season 3?

GRAHAM YOST: John Landgraf has always said, “Satisfy the audience at the end of the season, but leave some questions dangling,” so we had a couple of big questions to explore, the biggest being Raylan ...

On the Showtime drama series Shameless, actor Justin Chatwin plays Steve, a handsome and charming guy with a lot of money and a rap sheet a mile long. After a heartbroken Fiona (Emmy Rossum) was forced to choose her family over him in Season 1, Steve left for Costa Rica alone. But now he’s back, which is sure to throw a wrench in Fiona’s love life.

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour, Justin Chatwin sat down with Collider for this exclusive interview about what his character has been up to this season, what’s coming up for Steve, that getting past his own psychological barriers of being naked in front of people was part of the initial appeal for the show, finding out how different his character’s backstory is from what he expected, and that he likes Shameless because it brings up important issues, in a smart and funny way. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Collider: With as strong and great as Season 1 was, were you concerned at all that Season 2 would not live up to that?

JUSTIN CHATWIN: I had those reservations, after the first season. I was like, “You guys just set a standard that’s really high. Where are you going to go from there?”

Since you’re not really in the first few episodes, when you started getting those scripts, were you worried that Steve was never going to show back up?

CHATWIN: Yeah, I was sweating. But, I am coming back. Seriously, (executive ...

ABC’s intensely scary paranormal thriller The River follows the story of world famous wildlife expert and TV personality Dr. Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood), host of the beloved series “The Undiscovered Country.” After Cole goes missing deep in the Amazon, his wife, Tess (Leslie Hope), and estranged son, Lincoln (Joe Anderson), decide to lead a rescue mission deep into the unexplored reaches of the Amazon River, where nature is cruel, magic is real and nothing is what it seems.

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour, executive producer Oren Peli (creator of Paranormal Activity) talked about how he ended up developing an idea for a TV show, the extent of Steven Spielberg’s involvement, the challenges of telling a season’s worth of story in only eight episodes, doing the episodes with a scare-of-the-week while also advancing the overall mystery, trying to create moments where you don’t know what’s going to happen because it’s the unexpected that’s scary, and that even though no one is safe, characters won’t be killed off just for the sake of killing them off. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

How did this come about and how much of a production challenge was it to do this outdoors?

OREN PELI: It actually started with an idea that I had for a movie, which was much more simple than the way The River has evolved. It was just going to be about a documentary crew that had gone missing in the rainforest, and filming the rescue mission to ...

On FX’s Justified, actors Erica Tazel and Jacob Pitts play Deputy Marshal Rachel Brooks and Deputy Marshal Tim Gutterson, respectively. Populated with dirty politicians, hidden fortunes, a mysterious man named Limehouse (Mykelti Williamson) and an enterprising and lethal criminal from the Motor City (Neal McDonough), things are heating up for the law enforcement in Harlan, in Season 3 of the critically acclaimed, tightly written and expertly acted drama series.

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour, co-stars Erica Tazel and Jacob Pitts sat down with Collider for this exclusive interview about the journey their characters take this season, the new threats in Harlan, what has most surprised them about their characters, and how this show has spoiled them, when it comes to other work. Check out what they had to say after the jump.

Question: Where are your characters at this season?

ERICA TAZEL: We’re back in the daily grind of what we do in the office, assisting each other or not, or being sent on other duties that we, unfortunately, don’t get to see on the show. We’re just back up to regular old marshal duties.

JACOB PITTS: There’s the same sassy banter between Tim and Raylan (Timothy Olyphant). That’s really all I have to say about it.

What new threats are you facing this season, now that Mags Bennett (Margo Martindale) and most of her kin are gone?

PITTS: The main threat seems to come from Robert Quarles, who’s played by Neal McDonough. He’s a criminal, but he stands in for some ...

On the Showtime drama series Shameless, actor Jeremy Allen White plays Phillip “Lip” Gallagher, the second and by far the smartest Gallagher child, who has a penchant for trouble and a relationship with wild child neighbor Karen (Laura Wiggins) that is always threatening to break his heart. With an even further strained and more contentious relationship with his father than ever, Lip begins to realize that the more he fights to be his own man, the more he may end up just like his father, Frank (William H. Macy).

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour, Jeremy Allen White sat down with Collider for this exclusive interview about how lucky he feels to have such amazing material in Season 2, how the relationship between Frank and Lip will change this season, what he’d like to see Lip do with his life, how bizarre all of the sex scenes can be, and what working on this show with this cast has taught him about the craft of acting. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Collider: How happy are you with some of the amazing stuff they’ve been giving you, in Season 2?

Jeremy Allen White: The writers are pretty amazing. They’ve really been writing for me, this season. I’m really lucky. I got some great stuff in the first season, but this time around, the writers are really warming up to me and have given me some amazing stuff. I feel really, really lucky.

On the new Showtime comedy series House of Lies, actress Kristen Bell plays Jeannie Van Der Hooven, a talented and highly ambitious member of Marty Kaan’s (Don Cheadle) team of management consultants. Crafty, flirtatious and a bit mysterious, Jeannie does everything she can to keep her personal life personal, but she’s not above getting down and dirty with a different guy in every city she visits.

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour, Collider got the opportunity to sit down with Kristen Bell for this exclusive interview to talk about how the head of the network approached her directly about doing the role, the appeal of doing more provocative storylines, how much fun she’s having working with the extremely talented Don Cheadle (who is also an executive producer on the series), how she never would have imagined that she would have her toes sucked on TV, and that she craves diversity in her acting roles, but is also spontaneous when it comes to choosing projects. Check out what she had to say after the jump.

Collider: How did this come about for you? Were you approached with the role?

Kristen Bell: I was approached by David Nevins. He just called me up and said, “Would you be interested in this?” I already felt a spark of excitement, after being directly approached by the head of the network. Also, knowing that Don Cheadle was attached, it would have had to have been horrendous for me to not have said yes. Luckily, when I read ...
