Last week we filled you in on the progress that Millennium Films was gaining in regard to giving the Texas Chainsaw franchise another go.  At the time it was reported that the new film would be foregoing the events of Texas Chainsaw 3D and instead would be a sequel to Tobe Hooper’s 1974 Texas Chain Saw Massacre (before you get uppity about typos I should remind you that some films in the franchise combine the words “chain” and “saw” and others don’t) and a prequel to last year’s Texas Chainsaw 3D.

Texas Chainsaw 3D hit in early 2013 to a fantastic opening weekend at the box office before sinking like a stone due to poor word of mouth, so it makes sense that producer Carl Mazzocone and executive producers Christa Campbell and Lati Grobman would be looking for a new angle on the story.  Nothing appeals to fans more than going back to the thing that started it all.  Hence, Leatherface, the new film said to take place before  Tobe Hooper’s original film (which means that it’s now a prequel to the entire franchise, not just last year’s reboot).  Hit the jump for more on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 5 Release Date Pushed to October 2015, New TEXAS CHAINSAW About Leatherface’s Teen Years in the Works?

Hopefully you got your Paranormal Activity fix from the spin-off, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, because even though Paranormal Activity 5 was originally set to hit theaters on October 25, 2013 and then October 24, 2014, Paramount Pictures is now gunning for an October 2015 release instead.  At least that’s better than the 2016 date Paramount Pictures International teased at CineEurope last month.

On top of that, it also looks as though Millennium Films and Lionsgate might be giving the Texas Chainsaw franchise another go and possibly even nix plans to run with the cliffhanger from Texas Chainsaw 3D and go with a prequel idea instead.  Hit the jump for more on both stories.

Millennium Films Moves Forward with TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D Sequel

I guess this was fairly inevitable.  Coming off the opening weekend box office success of the sequel Texas Chainsaw 3D, Millennium Films is now moving forward with a follow-up film.  The news was first reported by Bloody Disgusting, and Deadline now confirms that production on the untitled sequel is set to get underway later this year in Louisiana.  Producer Carl Mazzocone and executive producers Mark Burg, Avi Lerner, Tobe Hooper, Trevor Short, John Thompson, Danny Dimbort, Lati Grobman, and Christa Campbell will all return.

Despite scathing reviews, Texas Chainsaw 3D bested the likes of The Hobbit and Django Unchained to land the number one spot at the box office last weekend with $23 million.  BD’s report notes that the producers have acquired the rights to make up to 7 Texas Chainsaw sequels, so depending on how further installments fare, Leatherface may be sticking around for some time to come.

Opening January 4th is director John Luessenhop’s (Takers) Texas Chainsaw 3DThe film acts as a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper’s original, ignoring the many reboots, prequels and remakes, and picks up where the 1974 film left off.  After Sally escapes to safety the enraged townspeople of Newt, Texas descend on the Sawyers, burning their house to the ground with the family still inside.  Decades later, Heather (Alexandra Daddario) inherits a Texas Estate from a grandmother she never knew she had, and when she brings along a group of friends to scope out her new home they unwittingly unleash Leatherface on the small town once more.  The film also stars Tania Raymonde, Tremaine “Trey Songz” Neverson, Scott Eastwood, Bill Moseley, Dan Yeager, Gunnar Hansen and Paul Rae.

At the recent Los Angeles press day, I sat down with Daddario.  We talked about what attracted her to the project, how she developed her version of the ‘survivor girl’, and the emotional toll of working on a horror film.  She also discussed Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, working on green screen, keeping the second movie more true to the books, returning to the franchise and more. I’ll say this for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise: the title tells you exactly what you’re getting.  It’s exactly like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles except in Massacre, they wear people for faces.  The latest installment in the franchise is on the way with Texas Chainsaw 3D, and we have five prize packs to giveaway to our Atlanta readers.  Each prize pack will contain a mini poster and t-shirt, and one person will win a grand prize of the t-shirt, mini poster, and a Lionsgate Horror 3-pack of DVDs (Scream, Saw: The Final Chapter, and My Bloody Valentine).  Leatherface would be proud.  He’d murder you, but he’d be proud.

Hit the jump for details.  Texas Chainsaw 3D opens January 4, 2013.

Now that Thanksgiving is over, it’s time to settle into the holiday spirit…with Texas Chainsaw 3D. A new TV spot and trailer have popped up for the re-imagined slasher pic, though the trailer doesn’t offer much in the way of new footage. But both do showcase star Alexandra Daddario (Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief), so you can’t really go wrong there.

Directed by John Luessenhop (Takers), Texas Chainsaw 3D also stars Tania Raymonde, Scott Eastwood, Bill Moseley, Dan Yeager, Gunnar Hansen and Paul Rae. The film opens in 3D on January 4th. Hit the jump to check out the new TV spot and trailer.

TOP 5: New York Comic-Con, TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D Set Visit, Wally Pfister Calls THE AVENGERS “Appalling”, CARRIE Teaser Trailer, Hugo Weaving vs. TRANSFORMERS

In the spirit of the Halloween season, last night I watched The Cabin in the Woods again for the first time since catching it in theaters back in April. After a second viewing, my feelings on the film haven’t really changed. I love it. I love it with the passion of an army of “Mermen”. It’s just a brilliant blend of satire, horror and comedy and I’ll argue all day/all night with anyone who tells me differently (in all fairness, it’s okay if you don’t like the movie…you’re wrong, but it’s okay). If you’re like me and enjoy taking in horror classics around good ol’ All Hallows’ Eve, I ask that you do yourself a favor and include The Cabin in the Woods in your classic programming slate. You’ll either (A) love it or (B) have the opportunity to argue with me all day/all night. It’s a win-win.

With my Halloween viewing recommendation in hand, I’ll now present to you this week’s edition of our Top 5. In this week’s iteration is our coverage of New York Comic-Con 2012, yours truly’s Texas Chainsaw 3D set visit, Wally Pfister using the words “appalling” and The Avengers in the same sentence and all hell breaking loose shortly thereafter, the first teaser trailer for director Kimberly Peirce‘s Carrie remake, and Hugo Weaving vs. Transformers. A brief recap and link to each patiently awaits your attention after the jump.

Lionsgate has announced the full cast for director John Luessonhop’s (Takers) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D. Joining Alexandra Daddario, Tania Raymonde, and Scott Eastwood in the pic is a slew of names including: Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects), Keram Malicki-Sanchez (Punisher: War Zone), Shaun Sipos (Final Destination 2), and R&B artist Trey Songz. Per the press release, the film will also feature a handful of throwback appearances with the original Leatherface, Gunnar Hansen, set to make a cameo and original lead Marilyn Burns and John Dugan appearing in the pic as well. Burns will play the role of Verna Carson whereas Dugan will be reprising his timelessly creepy turn as Grandfather.

As for the iconic role of Leatherface, Lionsgate has tapped newcomer Dan Yeager who earned the part after a chance meeting with Luessenhop (talk about good timing). For more on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D, check out the official press release after the jump. The film has begun principal photography in Shreveport, Louisiana with an October 5th, 2012 theatrical release in mind.

John Luessenhop in Talks to Helm 3D TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE

Writer/director John Luessenhop (Takers) is currently in negotiations to give The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise a 3D facelift. Per THR, the project is currently eyeing a June production start and is a joint undertaking between Lionsgate and Nu Image with Carl Mazzocone (former Twisted Pictures production president) producing. Although I’m a fan of the franchise, I have to admit that none of the aforementioned info pertaining to this latest iteration does anything to peak my interest. Luessenhop may well do a fine job bringing Leatherface to a new generation of moviegoers, but his resume isn’t all that assuring and the project’s expedited 3D production has all of the makings of a cash grab. In short, Lionsgate, Nu Image, and Luessenhop all have a lot of work to do if they want this Leatherface fan to give two cents (much less the inflated price of 3D theater admission) about the film.
