While the 85th Academy Awards will honor the very best of what 2012 had to offer in film tonight, the opposite end of the spectrum (supposedly) has been singled out this morning.  The Razzie Awards named The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 the Worst Picture of 2012, handing the film a total of seven awards including Worst Director for Bill Condon, Worst Screen Couple for Taylor Lautner and Mackenzie Foy, and Worst Actress for Kristen Stewart (she shared this award with her work in Snow White and the Huntsman).  Though I’m not the biggest fan of the franchise, if you think Breaking Dawn – Part 2 was the worst film of 2012 then you need to see more movies; the pic almost kind of works because of Condon’s direction, not in spite of it, and the final battle scene is legitimately entertaining.

Elsewhere at the Razzies, Adam Sandler was named Worst Actor for That’s My Boy and Rihanna “won” Worst Supporting Actress for Battleship.  Hit the jump to see the full list of winners.

As we await the 85th Academy Award nominations announcement on Thursday morning, we now have a look at the opposite end of the 2012 film spectrum.  The 33rd Golden Raspberry Award nominations have been announced, celebrating the very worst of what 2012′s movie slate had to offer.  Leading the pack is The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 with 10 nominations, as the film landed a nomination in every single category.  The Twilight closer will go head-to-head with Battleship, A Thousand Words, That’s My Boy, and The Oogieloves in Big Balloon Adventure for the Worst Picture title.

It’s easy to beat up on the Twilight franchise, and even though I wouldn’t go so far as to call Breaking Dawn – Part 2 a good movie, it’s in no way the worst movie of the year.  The sheer amount of beheadings alone in director Bill Condon’s climactic fight sequence is enough to make the movie worth watching.  Anyway, hit the jump to check out the full list of Razzie Awards nominations.

It has to be said that That’s My Boy has brilliant casting. When Andy Samberg hit Saturday Night Live he felt like the second Adam Sandler clone to hit the show (Jimmy Fallon was first), and so casting him as the son of Sandler feels right. Unfortunately, That’s My Boy is like most recent Sandler movies in that it’s scattershot, and not as funny as it should be. It is R rated, which means we get a darker Sandler than late, but that only helps so much. Our review of That’s My Boy on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

This weekend’s box office turned out to be pretty predictable. Brave, the thirteenth feature from fan-favorite Pixar studios, came out on top with an estimated $66.7 million from 4,127 locations. Easy to see that one coming. More of a question mark was Fox’s R-rated counter-programmer Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Many expected the film to crash in epic fashion; and while $16.5 million from 3,106 locations is not great, it is better than Rock of Ages and That’s My Boy managed last weekend so… yay?

This week on The Collision, we turn out attention to the topic of negative film criticism.  We explore Scott Jordan Harris‘ recent editorial railing against critics who have lost sight of actual critique in favor of snarky takedowns, and we consider Jay Rayner‘s piece about how readers love those take downs.  This leads to a discussion about the purpose of criticism, and I’m really proud of this conversation.  We also review Rock of Ages and That’s My Boy, and then provide our recommendations.

Not even close. For the second weekend in a row, DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted is America’s number one attraction; down just 41% with an estimate of $35.5 million. Though down a much more substantial 60%, Fox’s Prometheus managed to hold on to second place thanks to two widely underperforming debuts. Those would be Rock of Ages and That’s My Boy which, even when combined, couldn’t come close to challenging for first place.

The raunchy and outrageous comedy That’s My Boy tells the story of Donny Berger (Adam Sandler), an aimless loser who knocked up his smoking hot teacher when he was a teenager, and was left to raise their love child even though he was completely unprepared to be a parent. Now, 30 years later, Todd (Andy Samberg) is all grown up and a successful Wall Street executive who hasn’t seen his father in years. But, with Donny owing tens of thousands to the IRS, he figures that tracking down his son will not only give him the chance to ask for the money he needs to stay out of jail, but to also finally bond with his son.

At the film’s press day, actor Andy Samberg spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about how he came to be playing the son of Adam Sandler and Susan Sarandon, how much of the comedy was on the page when he initially read it, and keeping the heart with all of the R-rated humor.  He also talked about the news that he has officially left Saturday Night Live after seven seasons, what that conversation with executive producer Lorne Michaels was like, his hopes to continue contributing to the show, where he’d like to go next with his career, making another Lonely Island album, how uncomfortable his tight white shorts were for Grown Ups 2, who he’s playing in The To Do List, how excited he is for the release of the animated feature Hotel Transylvania, and the cupcakes at the Magnolia Bakery in New York.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

After one week of positive box office performance with the debuts of Madagascar 3 and Prometheus, things have gone back to bleak. That’s because each of this weekend’s new titles stumbled badly on their first day in theatres. Neither Rock of Ages, the PG-13 musical starring Tom Cruise, nor That’s My Boy, the R-rated comedy starring Adam Sandler, managed to shine: Rock of Ages earned an estimated $5.3 million from 3,470 locations while That’s My Boy took in just $4.6 million from 3,030. To illustrate how bad those numbers are for a summer movie, The Three Stooges earned more ($5.6 million) on its first Friday… in April. Granted, mid-June is not exactly a box office hot spot but even Mr. Popper’s Penguins managed a $6.3 million debut at this time last year. So, instead of the $25 to $30 million that these titles were aiming for, they will now be lucky to see their weekend totals rise above the mid-teens. Of course, this is great news for Madagascar 3, which will continue to hold the top spot on the weekend chart for a second week in a row.  Full details and analysis tomorrow.

There are two incredibly infuriating things about Adam Sandler: First, he makes movies that aren’t very good but they make boatloads of cash.  Second, he could make better movies, but he chooses not to since they might not make boatloads of cash.  It’s for these reasons that critics largely brush off Sandler’s movies even though they’re screened for press (which is more than I can say for the films of Paul W.S. Anderson).  There are brief times when Sandler will wander off the beaten track to do something “respectable” like Funny People or Punch-Drunk Love, but everything he does feels like a cynical calculation where he’ll inevitably come back to the safe confines of a lowest-common-denominator comedy.  That’s My Boy, his first R-rated feature since Punch-Drunk, shows brief glimmers of the Sandler we knew at the beginning of his film career, but those moments are drowned out by the lazy comedy for which he’s become infamous.

A couple of new trailers for the upcoming R-rated comedy That’s My Boy have gone online.  The first is a fairly straightforward red-band trailer for the film, and the second is a really funny trailer cut by Andy Samberg himself.  The red-band trailer actually has a few genuine laughs, and it reveals that Adam Sandler, who plays Samberg’s estranged father, pretends to be Samberg’s friend throughout some of the film because Samberg told his soon-to-be-in-laws that his dad was dead.  More fun, though, is a special trailer for the film that Samberg himself cut.  It almost plays like a fake trailer from Funny People, and Samberg appears to know exactly what That’s My Boy looks like from an outside perspective.  Though I’m cautious with every Sandler project nowadays given his recent output, I have to admit that these two trailers actually make That’s My Boy seem somewhat appealing.

Eight clips from the new comedy That’s My Boy have gone online.   The film stars Adam Sandler as rich party animal who tries to avoid going to jail for tax evasion by getting his estranged and independently-wealthy son (Andy Samberg) to front him the cash to pay back the IRS.  What’s more, the dad decides to make this play during the son’s upcoming nuptials.  The film marks Sandler’s first R-rated film since 1996’s Bulletproof, and features a supporting cast that includes Leighton Meester, James Caan, Milo Ventimiglia, Will Forte and Vanilla Ice.

While walking around at this year’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas, I’ve been taking tons of pictures of all the posters/banners/theater standees that have been on display.  For those unaware, CinemaCon is a convention put on for theater owners in order to get a look at what the studios have to offer for the rest of the year, and where vendors can show new products for theaters to buy.  It’s basically Comic-Con for theater owners.  Besides showing off never before seen footage, the studios often bring the cast and the filmmakers.  Over the course of a few days, Hollywood comes to Las Vegas.
