A new trailer for writer/director Sofia Coppola’s new film The Bling Ring has been released online. The film is based on the true story of a group of teenagers who robbed the homes of the rich and famous between October 2008 and August 2009, coming away with over $3 million worth of loot from the likes of Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, and Lindsay Lohan. I found myself shaking my head throughout this whole trailer, which is a testament to how well Coppola has captured the celebrity-obsessed culture that surrounds us nowadays. Watson looks to give a strong performance here as one of the oblivious and self-obsessed teenagers, and I’m eager to see how the story plays out through Coppola’s lens.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film stars Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Claire Julien, Gavin Rossdale, and Leslie Mann. The Bling Ring will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and opens in limited release on June 14th.

The full lineup for the 2013 Cannes Film Festival was announced today, and it looks like a really great group of films will be screening in the south of France later next month. Official selections include Steven Soderbergh’s Behind the Candelabra, Joel and Ethan Coen’s Inside Llewyn Davis, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives, Alexander Payne’s Nebraska, Roman Polanski’s Venus In Fur, and James Gray’s The Immigrant (previously titled Low Life). Additionally, the Robert Redford man vs. nature film All Is Lost will premiere out of competition, and Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring, James Franco’s As I Lay Dying, and the Sundance hit Fruitvale Station (previously titled Fruitvale) will screen Un Certain Regard.
A number of these titles are early awards contenders, and I’m particularly interested to hear the reaction for the Coens’ Davis and Payne’s The Descendants follow-up Nebraska, which is a black-and-white road trip movie starring Will Forte and Bruce Dern. Hit the jump to read the full lineup. The 2013 Cannes Film Festival runs from May 15 – 26th.

Some rather interesting new materials from writer/director Sofia Coppola’s upcoming film The Bling Ring have made their way online. Most notable is the first clip from the film, which is based on the true story of a group of teenagers who robbed the homes of the rich and famous between October 2008 and August 2009, coming away with over $3 million worth of loot from the likes of Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, and Lindsay Lohan. The clip shows the group of youngsters raiding a rather ridiculous “closet” that presumably belongs to one of the aforementioned celebrities, and we see Emma Watson’s character trying out a stripper pole in the process. I’m really interested to see Coppola’s angle on this celeb-obsessed story, and it’s looking like The Bling Ring might make a nice double feature with Harmony Korine’s culture portrait Spring Breakers.
Hit the jump to watch the first clip and to check out a batch of new images. The film also stars Taissa Farmiga, Israel Broussard (Flipped), Katie Chang, Claire Julien, Gavin Rossdale, and Leslie Mann. The Bling Ring opens in limited release on June 14th.

We’ve got a few new posters for your viewing pleasure. Briefly:
- The Bling Ring – Sofia Coppola‘s film is based on the true story of a group of teenagers who robbed the homes of the rich and famous. I really like this poster, and I think they should make keep the PerezHilton.com watermark part of the official poster due to the shared obsession with celebrities. The film opens on June 14th and stars Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Claire Julien, and Leslie Mann.
- Violet & Daisy – The directorial debut of Precious screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher also has a great poster. The film stars Alexis Bledel and Saorise Ronan as a pair of perky teenage assassins who have second thoughts about their latest job. Click here for my review from TIFF 2011. The film also stars Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Danny Trejo, and James Gandolfini.
- Much Ado about Nothing – A bland poster, but there’s not much you can do with a film that cost nothing to make and the spark is in performances rather than individual images. The one featured here is one of the few memorable shots. Click here for my review from TIFF 2012. The film opens on June 7th and stars Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Nathan Fillion, and other actors who have previously worked with director Joss Whedon.

A number of new images from writer/director Sofia Coppola’s upcoming film The Bling Ring have landed online. The pic marks Coppola’s follow-up to her 2010 film Somewhere and is based on the true story of a group of teenagers who robbed the homes of the rich and famous between October 2008 and August 2009, coming away with over $3 million worth of loot from the likes of Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, and Lindsay Lohan. It’s most definitely an interesting choice of topic for the Lost in Translation filmmaker, but the pic’s first trailer and these new images promise a fascinating look into the celebrity-obsessed, material-based culture that spurred the film’s real-life events in the first place. The new images also give us another look at Emma Watson’s rather interesting character transformation.

Release dates have been announced for a couple of anticipated 2013 features from A24 Films.
- The Bling Ring – Writer/director Sofia Coppola’s film about the group of teenagers who robbed the homes of the rich and famous between 2008 and 2009 will hit theaters in limited release on June 14th. The film stars Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, and Leslie Mann.
- The Spectacular Now – Director James Ponsoldt’s (Smashed) excellent teen drama made a big splash at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and A24 has set the film for an August 2nd release. The pic stars Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley and centers on the relationship between two teenagers who are struggling with some serious issues. Read Matt’s highly positive review here.

A couple of interesting acquisitions have been announced. First up, Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions—known for its small budget, big profit model with the Paranormal Activity films and Insidious—has acquired a found footage movie called Peachfuzz, produced by the incredibly hard working brothers Mark and Jay Duplass. Plot details on the project are being kept under lock and key, but Mark stars in the film that centers on a young man who answers a Craigslist ad “and gets much more than he bargained for.” Production on the Patrick Brice film has already wrapped.

The first official images from writer/director Sofia Coppola’s new film The Bling Ring has been unveiled. The pic is based on the true story of a group of teenagers who robbed the homes of the rich and famous between October 2008 and August 2009, coming away with over $3 million worth of loot from the likes of Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, and Lindsay Lohan. The cast is lead by Harry Potter’s Emma Watson and, based on these images, her character looks to be just about as far from Hermione Granger as possible. We also get a look at co-stars Taissa Famiga (American Horror Story), Israel Broussard (Flipped), Katie Chang and Claire Julien. We previously saw a couple of batches of set photos, but these official images shows the whole Bling Ring gang all together, frappuccinos in tow.

We’ve got a few set photos to share with you this afternoon. Briefly:
- The Bling Ring – Emma Watson was spotted doing her best sexy socialite impression on the set of Sofia Coppola’s real-life story of a group of teenagers who robbed the homes of the rich and famous in the late 2000’s.
- Les Miserables – A new look at Russell Crowe as the nefarious Inspector Javert in Tom Hooper’s movie musical adaptation of the classic story. Eddie Redmayne, who plays Marius, is also seen in character. Hugh Jackman stars as Jean Valjean in the pic, and I’m not quite sure but I think he might be hiding in disguise in one of the images. The film opens on December 25th.

Casting appears to be moving quickly on Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring now that Emma Watson is set as the lead. We recently learned that American Horror Story star Taissa Farmiga joined the ensemble cast, and now THR reports that Leslie Mann, Israel Broussard (Flipped), Katie Chang, Claire Pfister and Georgia Rock have been added. Written by Coppola, the film is based on the true story of a group of teenagers who robbed the homes of the rich and famous between October 2008 and August 2009, coming away with over $3 million worth of loot from the likes of Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, and Lindsay Lohan.
Mann will play a mom of two of the girls involved in the thievery, and Broussard is set as the male lead. Besides Watson and Farmiga, Coppola seems to have gone with relative newcomers to play the group of teens. Broussard seems to have the most experience of the four other young ‘uns, most recently starring in The Chaperone with Triple H. I’m always happy to see Mann onscreen, and I’m eager to see Coppola’s take on celebrity/fame obsession. Production is set to begin this spring in Los Angeles.

After breaking out with the first season of Ryan Murphy’s hit horror anthology series American Horror Story, actress Taissa Farmiga has booked two new feature roles. Variety reports that Farmiga has signed on to join Sofia Coppola’s true crime story The Bling Ring. Written by Coppola, the film is based on the true story of a group of teenagers who robbed the homes of the rich and famous between October 2008 and August 2009, coming away with over $3 million worth of loot from the likes of Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, and Lindsay Lohan. Yesterday we reported that Harry Potter star Emma Watson is set for a leading role in the ensemble, and now it appears Farmiga will be joining her.
Additionally, Farmiga has landed a leading role in the drama Jamesy Boy. The film tells the story of a young suburban street gang member who gets sent to a maximum-security prison and strikes up an unlikely friendship with a convicted murderer. Farmiga will play the main character’s love interest with a supporting cast that includes Mary-Louise Parker, Ving Rhames, and James Woods. Farmiga is the younger sister of actress Vera, and I found her work to be quite impressive on American Horror Story. Given the show’s anthology nature, Farmiga isn’t expected to return for its second season this fall. She’ll shoot Jamesy Boy first before moving on to Bling Ring, and I think both roles are smart choices for the young actress.

Now that a yearly Harry Potter shoot is no longer a part of their schedule, the stars of the most successful film franchise of all time are starting to branch out. Daniel Radcliffe has been making a successful run on Broadway in between film projects, and now Emma Watson is preparing to stretch her chops as a leading lady. Variety reports that Sofia Coppola has tapped Watson to star in her next project, The Bling Ring. The film is based on the true story of a group of teenagers who robbed the homes of the rich and famous between October 2008 and August 2009, coming away with over $3 million worth of loot from the likes of Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, and Lindsay Lohan. Coppola wrote the project, which she will also direct and produce.
I think Watson has incredible potential and I’m excited to see her take on a Coppola film. I didn’t love Somewhere, but Coppola has an undeniably unique voice and a knack for making young actresses flourish onscreen. Watson just wrapped The Perks of Being a Wallflower and is set to re-team with Potter director David Yates on an adaptation of the memoir Your Voice in My Head. The actress has some challenging dramatic material ahead of her and I’m eager to see Watson come into her own.
